Average cost of FI + labor
I'd been meaning to FI my 40th for quite sometime now, so now I have been penny saving up for an FI kit, I was wondering if anyone would be nice enough to share me the cost of their FI kit + install and tune.
|
I don't have my exact quote on me, been 4 years since my SC was installed, but the one thing I can suggest on pricing is get as much done up front as possible if you can. The car comes apart a good chunk, and this is an ideal time to install thing such as new clutch, radiator, etc. and many shops will reduce labor costs since the car is already apart.
Typical shop rate is probably 80-120 dollars per hour I believe, and a typical FI install I believe is 2-3 days of work if all materials are on hand. |

With all the supporting mods assume you'll spend up to 20k. If I can find it I'll post up some build numbers I came up with that was reasonably accurate. Mind you the 20K number is assuming NYC mechanic rates @ $100/per hr.

$15-20k has always been the number ive figured it would run to do it right.

From my list for a stock Z I have 22K plus 1.1k for extra work that will pop up.
The gauge cost is kinda high because if it were me I'd want to replace the stock 3 gauge area which isn't as simple as other options. Also some things I have listed are not 100% necessary like the intercooler coating/heat wrap/nismo diff cover/etc. Somethings can also be done earlier with no real impact to cost so you dont have 1 big bill. Like the brakes/diff/and exhaust can all be done at any time. |

Expect labor to cost at least $3k for a twin turbo install, which factors in the cost of removing and re-installing the exhaust, transmission, and engine cradle before installing the kit. If the shop is fully devoting time to a single car, that would be at least 2-3 days of down time.
Expect to spend at least $1300 on a clutch/flywheel/HD-CSC combo. Technically the labor cost is already included above. It is recommended to get an aftermarket with more flow for the turbos, and also get high flow cats or test pipes to reduce restriction. Just as a word of caution, the HFC sits right after the hot side of the turbo so it'll destroy the HFC in a matter of months. Your best bet is to place the HFC further down the exhaust path. So far Fast Intentions has a turbo catback setup. Expect to spend at least $1200-1800 for a new exhaust and HFC or test pipes. Gauges can range from $50-75 to $250-300 each. If you want to replace the stock gauges, the installation is tedious and will cost you 1-2 days worth of labor. As for the cost of the kits, well you can look that one up. |

Here is a copy of what I posted in the GTM reflection page. Some stuff doesn't apply here, but I'll still leave it in.
$22,000 for the car when I purchased it ~$10,000 for the TT kit ~$1,000 in gauges and EBC ~$2,500 in wheels and tires ~$1,500 brakes and suspension work ~$1,600 clutch / flywheel / HD csc ~$5,000 for the installation of the TT and all the supporting mods that I sent him. I also paid ~$1800 for my exhaust right after I purchased my car. |

Almost forgot.... you'll need an oil cooler, too!

Dang..back to the piggy bank saving I go. I always thought it would be ballpark around 10-15K..never expected it to cross the 20.
|
It depends on what you want to do. Technically it's best to save as much as you can. I tried to look for deals for various things like gauges and whatnot, so that's stuff I could purchase and pay off. For the actual kit, the shop ordered it and the rest of the accessories just to save on shipping.
|
I'm just over 10k with the VSR single setup, oil cooler, boost/afr gauge, and exhaust. There's other things I want but don't necessarily have to have at this moment. All depends on goals as well. But it's definitely a good idea to knock* as much out as you can at first rather than later.

You can also try to plan your install for the winter usually shops are less busy and more willing to cut a better hourly rate maybe. Scratch all that, do some basic mods, get a helmet, sign up for a local car club and have some fun on the track. 300whp is plenty of fun and excitement if you never have. |
That's also true. I'm not much of a racer. Half throttle in 3rd or 4th is enough to get boost without speeding or driving recklessly. It feels so good, and it's enough to intimidate my surroundings. No need to race either. :)

i was quoted 1200 to install a bp system, i ended up doing it myself
there are a lot of cost besides the fi that you need to consider gauges, tune, clutch/flywheel, oil cooler if it doesnt come with kit etc etc figure outside the kit there is another 5-7k- in costs associated with the kit that are not part of the kit |
I would call some shops and just ask the questions if they are solid businesses, they will give you some straight up numbers. I would highly recommend you call Sebastian at SpecialtyZ (It's in Chatsworth). He can help you with a lot of your decision as long as you have an idea of what your goals are. Seb did the install on both mine and Nixlimited's cars and mine has run perfectly since I pick it up six months ago!!!

I'm probably about $13.5k in and I installed everything myself except the clutch/flywheel ($600 labor). Granted I already had a CBE. Price includes custom tune also. |
