safe to drive SC untuned for 50 miles?
So I am looking at my options for getting a supercharger kit installed in my Z. I have figured that I can save around 1k in labor costs having it installed at a tuner shop closeby. Will there be any problems with me driving the car, untuned with the SC kit for 40-50 miles to a Z specialist shop to tune?
Also, hoe easy is it to swap out the pulleys for more boost in the future? I am considering getting a stage 2 but doing less boost because the 7AT is iffy with handling 500whp (plan to keep it more in the 440whp range). This would leave me the option of going higher in the future if I decide it's worth it to do the GTM valve body upgrade. Also any experience form guys with autos running boost and tranny reliability at your power levels would be helpful as well. |
I wasn't aware that there was any sc kit on the market that didn't send you a base map. I would sooner drive a TT kit untuned than a sc kit, since the sc kit is always making at least a little boost.

Can a local shop that doesn't have uprev do the base tune?
The kit should come with the cable. You can load the map yourself if you DIY the install, so I can't imagine why they couldn't.
Oh, okay. I was under the impression that you needed uprev to do the tune since GTM asked me if I had an uprev license (which I do) when i was asking them about install costs.
If you've already got the license and cable, what's the question? Bring your laptop and load up the base map when you go pick up the car.
I have the license from when I got my car tuned (though I'm not sure what my license is). I didn't know it was that easy. If it comes with a cable, then I guess it'll all be fine. Now the questions is do I go safe with stage 1, closer to the safe limit with stage 1.5, or future possible upgradeability with stage 2 and larger pulleys...
You're in CA, so you can't get decent gas and have to do all of that CARB bs. I'll defer to Sam on that one.
I think you'll need to upgrade to Osiris?
(I'm not a tuning terminology guru) |
I'm pretty sure that's what he means when he says he has an Uprev license.
I had CBE and HFCs installed and got an Uprev tune back in late 2011 if that clears anything up.
Maybe, maybe not. Did you get the license and cable, or just the tune?
I got a tune, but I thought that gives me a license. Since future retunes are half the price because I already paid for the license with the first tune.
I was under the impression that the license should include the cable. I could have it backwards, though.
I'll ask my tuner and also ask GTM if their turn key kit comes with a license
The turn key kit will come with a license and cable.
What happens is you load the license via the cable they provide and then the tune. The cable you get is able to reload tunes as needed & data log, but is unable to make adjustments to the tune. You can purchase an upgrade from Uprev to do this. |
The turn key kit includes the license and cable.

Got it, thanks! Now to save up some extra money and wait for the Gf out be out of town for a week...
lol, wow!
Does the Stillen kit come with larger fuel injectors? Depending on how much larger/different they are it will most likely run pretty sloppy for 50 miles untuned. Will it cause damage...who knows. If you absolutely have to drive it...drive it slow and keep rpm's down to a minimum
Not going Stillen. Thinking of getting the turn key from GTM, having my local tuner do the install and load the base map. Then going to drive it, no longer untuned, over to Specialty Z to have trans cooler and larger lines installed as well as a retune. That's how I hope it plays out at least.
I would at least have your tuner boost the AT line pressures thru Orisis if you don't do valvebody upgrade. I am going to be tapping the transmission to monitor trans temps.
Yeah, Seb from SPecialty Z said that with a tune, cooler, and larger lines, the AT should be able to safely handle mid 400s for whp. The GTM guy i talked to agreed as well. My goal is around 430-440 whp.

The guy at GTM was talking about not romping on it too hard in the high gears, but said it would probably be fine in lower mid 400 whp range. I will talk to them some more before doing it. Maybe I can use the 100mm pulley in the stage 1.5 kit to bring the boost down a bit more.
