You going automatic now? :icon14:

Ventruck 03-08-2020 08:26 PM

Wow, indeed if anything standalone was to take a Z another step into the modern car world, it would be a DCT.

Looking forward to seeing how this progresses.

That's true. I wonder how the gear ratios would work out for a road course car?

Flywheels are done! Once those arrive here, I will begin fitting this to the engine in my car, and we shall see exactly how tunnel fitment is, and start making the trans mount.

cv129 03-09-2020 06:28 PM

Will be an epic day when finished

phunk 03-10-2020 12:05 AM

Photos all removed due to a copy-cat project having already emerged. I will have to wait until its all available for ordering to share any more photo updates. Got like 200 hours into that project! Not trying to help anyone else.

Im not sure if they are a member or not. So far I have only seen that there is an individual who has bought the transmission to start the project. There has to be a shop involved to make it happen, so I am sure we will eventually find out.

They are using a slightly different bell-housing version of the same transmission. There is one local to me that I almost bought for this project, but thought it would be silly to make multiple versions of such an obscure product. <sigh> I am going to go ahead and pick it up so that I can have the alternate design already finished and remain ahead of any tag-alongs.

In other news, I got photos of the flywheels... and they are beautiful :D

So I might at least have a photo of it all up in the car real soon now.

absolutely! I am almost over it now. I know it isn't being done with ill intent. Its just frustrating to spend so much time on something like this where it really just isn't any necessary to have competitive options. If someone else was already making it, I would have never bothered.

phunk 03-10-2020 02:48 PM

I will also add that it is my own fault, shooting myself in the foot, for even showing it off before completion. The person who is beginning on the project now saw it on my FB, asked me several technical questions about it. They already had a different trans conversion ready to install, and are now selling it after learning of this transmission and buying one. So lesson learned, no matter how obscure, I cannot show others what I am working on until its all ready for sale.

hah! Its not quite like that... They seem like a genuinely good person, I dont think it even occurred to them that I would be possessive over the project.

Permission to execute.

phunk 03-10-2020 04:50 PM

There are more malicious people I would send you after first. This exact scenario happens constantly in this industry. Only a few products that I have designed were never copied either in concept or entirety.

Lots of people need to feel special in everything they do, and they suffer some condition where they simply cannot run *any* product off the shelf. They have to have their twist on it to "make it better" for them; so they come up with excuses and reasons. Changes that will never actually impact anything other than reinforce their pride. This type of person usually has no idea how they negatively impact genuine product developers, they are oblivious to anything outside of their own world. And hey I just described myself half the time, so how mad can I get.

Last year... customer buys my S2000 fuel pump. It arrives to him, he asks me if I will custom make him another one with a few really minor changes. I declined, because of course that would be silly to put a bunch of time into a 1-off item with no purpose. Nothing he wanted to change would make an actual improvement to the product, it was just small changes to make him feel special. So what does he do? Naturally he copies 99% of the design and sends it to another company to produce a batch of them, and now there are 2 nearly identical units on the market, watering down the value of the R&D and product, all because he needed to feel special. <shrug> what are you gonna do? Keep chugging forward.

Charles, here's how I see it and I tell anybody that'll listen. When I got my first fuel return, you walked me through the rough spot on my hardline like a special ed teacher and I was a tardigan. When I fell off a cliff with the wrong injectors I talked to you on the phone at 10pm like Jake from StateFarm while my GF looked at me like Inwas arranging a hookup. Very few companies do that.
I have never in 52yrs seen a commercial for Ferrari, McClaren or even Bentleys. Never saw a managers sale or Labor Day sale for one either. What separates them is that we already know the quality performance and value of the things they've produced before and it was always consistent. Anything you make or talk about making I'd go so far as to say all of us here don't need a pitch , we just wanna know if we can use it because we already know your quality, performance and value. If another guy came out the day before you with something you told me to wait on I'm waiting. ..... I don't know that guy, but I have a car full of your stuff that #1 I know works beyond a shadow and #2 If it didn't work all I gotta do is ask you what I did wrong.
So yeah, you're gonna have to go dark on us and that was hard for me to say. But at the same time, we got you.

Thank you very much for the words of encouragement ! :)

Youve inspired me to make an edit to the contact page of the website! Where it lists the technical support email address, I shall change it to "To find out what you did wrong, email us at: ___________"

:bowrofl:

This. Other people can make their knockoffs, but when I'm ready to push my Z further and need a fuel return kit, it'll be CJM I go to, not Bob's Discount Fuel Return Kits (or AAM...)

Test fit the flywheel to the engine and trans, all appears well.

I put the bell-housing adapter plate back in the CNC tonight to make a few more changes and get a little more weight out of it. Its down to 7.5 lb according to CAD but I haven't confirmed on a scale yet. I think the production ones will be down to around 7.0.

The custom flywheels appear to be exactly as I specified, which also gives me some additional clearance. I might take advantage of that and make the adapter plates a little thinner for the production kits. But before I make that call I want to get the trans up in the car as is and see how it all looks.

Maybe I will find some time Sunday to put the trans up in the car.

Geez look at beekcake input shaft....
