AAM Twin Turbo Kit
 
Hi Z Fam,

I wanted to create a thread as this is my first post here. In the past, there has been topics on the AAM TT kit and I believe I read everything about them and probably heard most of the review of the kit itself. I have not come to anything as of recent, so I wanted to create a new thread and get a good understand/updated information regarding the kit and how well it's held up.

1) when did you purchase the kit?

2) how many miles have you put on it?

3) how would you consider your driving?

4) what kind of problems have you had?

5) did you have to do any additional mods after the purchase?

6) how many miles did you have on the engine prior to install of the kit?

7) for auto tran owners, besides upgrading your trans, what else did you have to do and how much did it cost to upgrade your trans and how is it holding up?

8) for Manuel owners, besides upgrading your clutch, what else did you have to do and how much did it cost to upgrade your clutch and how is it holding up?

9) any regrets?

10)overall, how do you feel about the kit?

11) how is your block holding up?

12) how much boost and HP are you putting down?

13) what gauges are you using, air flow, boost, oil pressure?

I know these are a lot of questions but it definitely helps me and others who are interested in this Kit. This information, that is provided by you guys, will definitely gives everyone an opportunity to see how the kit is holding up and giving us an overall idea of how it's functioned since the release.

You are probably going to be better off emailing or sending a PM to each person individually for AAM right now. The kit is still new and many of the posts on installs for AMM kits have been by shops.

I would say the kit has been on par with others on the market though hard to know as I have not seen one in person or know anyone personally with the kit.

Many of your questions are not AAM specific but more going boost specific which I can try to help with:
-What is important? Always double the final number, this may not be relevant day 1 but things will break and it will not be cheap.
-The gauges many use: AFR, oil pressure, oil temp, boost (if going E then possibly an E gauge)
-Boost & HP are not always equal, it also has to do with your tune and potentially other bottlenecks in your system (proper exhaust, fuel, etc.)
-Clutch: You will break the OEM clutch, but additional items are flywheel & CSC (you can do Z1 replacement or just upgrade the CSC with aftermarket both have pros/cons)
-Other mods to consider are cooling & exhaust, cooling is oil, radiator (possibly fan upgrade) but also removing hot air from the engine bay with a vented hood or fender liner. Exhaust you will need to pair your exhaust & down pipes with your power requirements.

All the above is also dependent on what you want from boost and plan to do with the car. If you just want a more powerful street car you can skip some items such as a vented hood but if you want to hit the track on the weekends then what I have listed is needed plus understanding additional track requirements possibly needed.

1) purchased kit 2 years ago
2)I put around 10000 miles on kit
3)very spirited driving
4)only problem I had was one of turbo disconnected from manifold after half summer of driving, had to pull motor out since there is no room, and little bit of tag welding fixed it.
5)I did all mods when I installed kit, only thing I had to do after was full BBK since my car was almost 700whp
6) engine that went in was freshly rebuild
7) doesnt apply
8) I did the rjm Adjustable Clutch Pedal System on top of the clutch (SPEC SS-Trim Super Twin Disc Clutch Assembly) clutch holding up great, its little noisy in idle otherwise great clutch
9)any regrets? I mean car is great and I love how it takes off like a boieng 777, however I spent $50,000 on mods (without the price of the car) and if I can go back, I would just run a TT kit on stock motor and call it a day
10)AAM competition kit is well designed, those BorgWarner's turbos are amazing and have almost no lag. Only downside is I had to get rid of AC in my car to get everything to fit in my engine bay, but I never run AC ever when its boiling hot outside (I prefer to open window and listen to the exhaust )
11) block holding great as it was freshly rebuild
12) running 16 psi, putting down 680 and 540 torque I believe
13) I am using glowshift gauges, will be taking them off and replacing them with something better
14) $50-55k on mods
15) lots of hiccups when u run into big projects, my car was suppose to be at AAM competition for 2 month and ended up being 4 month i believe (due to nobody fault just "hiccups")
16) most important thing is to make sure car never runs out of fuel, invest money into the fuel system upgrades when u going TT, that's your real insurance. Also make sure u know what u getting yourself into before u do it, so dot think that the TT kit is 10000 and installation and u done, u will need exhaust, clutch, fuel upgrades, tuning software and license and anything else that comes up, make sure u have 20-25K minimum for a new kit with supporting mods for it.

you did just fine explaining, thank you for this information and I will be looking into those links you sent. As we know, these kits are not cheap and a huge investment for us (unless you got bunch of money to throw around) so I have been researching for months now and will continue.

I have a friend who experimented with GTR turbo kit onto his 370z and everything seems to work just fine, he needs few more upgrades but all is well so far.

you did such an amazing job answering these questions, and who cares about the spelling haha as long as I got my info.

I have been in contact with AAM and Dynosty. I fully trust Hal at dynasty to do the install and tune up and I do like talking to Luis at AAM competition but just not sure if I want my install done there (nothing against their shop)

I planned my budget for 20k tops and notified the shop that I don't want the car back until it's running flawless, so basically take 3-4 months to do all the work they need just because I live in a state where it snows from November-may

I bought mine back in May this year and it arrived in Mid-late July....Started the install first week of August and will finish just this week!!!!!!

2) how many miles have you put on it?
0 miles on the kit so far...finish the install and towing to get tuned next week

3) how would you consider your driving?
very aggresive on the track

4) what kind of problems have you had?
I can tell you that there is very little room. I had to knock some very small dents to fit the turbos..(I believe this to be from putting in the Z1 engine mounts...I think it jsut moved the engine the slightest and the AAM kit did not like that lol...be prepared to make very minor adjustments

5) did you have to do any additional mods after the purchase?
When I bouhgt my kit i went and upgraded to 1000cc injectors, CJM complegte fuel system, 6puck clutch/fly, went with ecutek tuning not the uprev that comes with the kit, went 3" true dual exhaust from AAM as well, and the AAM R-line oil cooler....it looks like i'm going to invest in some hood vents or front bumper vents as I see the engine going to be very hot in the near future

I also went with a floating brake kit by Sparta, KW V3 coilovers, whiteline sway bars, spc camber arms

6) how many miles did you have on the engine prior to install of the kit?
I have 51k miles on the engine when I decided to do this project

I went with competition 6puck clutch/fly and the zspeed CMAK delete kit

none yet other than the waiting to get everything done as it is a VERY big project to work on

The kit seems very solid and everything that comes in it looks to be of pretty good quality

11) how is your block holding up?
block should hold up pretty nice as i will only be looking to dyno a 500-515 whp which is pretty safe for the stock block

12) how much boost and HP are you putting down?
i should be doing anywhere from 8-12 psi and 500-515 whp

13) what gauges are you using, air flow, boost, oil pressure?
im using tanabe A/F, oil pressure, and boost gauge

14) total cost of the project?
I have spent roughly 32k to date

15) are there any hiccups?
yes the engine does not just go in smoothly once finishing the build...like I said i had to do little hammering in the bay to clear the turbos and pipes...the AAM R-line is tricky to install..there is no standard spot to put it...i placed it behind the intercooler to the driver side..time will tell if I have to find a different place with heat and whatnot

16) what do you think Is important that we should know?

Once you go FI you will forever need to tinker and dump money..and the constant thought of doing even more to reach the 600 700 800hp benchmarks...Ive already been thinking about forged internals to help with torque and more HP

on a side note: I was cussing out Nissan in my head last night because I was so frustrated. You could by a 2008 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 for the same price with doing little mods and cranking over 550 NA

yes but with the vette you will have to do some major stuff as well to track it other than drag it...drag is fun but it only gives you a 10 second thrill vs tracking giving you endless thrill until you have to park and life the hood to cool the engine lol

I agree with you, drag is boring and I cannot see why people like it but... that's my opinion. Where as tracking your car... shows some skill! I do think vette's look ugly.

Update:

I pulled the trigger on this kit and pending production. Should receive this kit within 2-3 weeks
