Buzzing Noise from Rear Area

Have had my Z since late September. Occassionally I get a very annoying buzzing noise coming from somewhere behind the seats. Seems to happen when the car has been out in the Sun and then driven on rough roads. Also occurs when RPMs go above 6K. When I push up on roof it seems to go away until I stop pushing. Not sure if I want to take it to the dealer. I'm worried they may very likely make the matter worse as the sound only happens occassionally.

Anyone else have a similar problem?

I've heard that also. So far my dealer has not be able to duplicate the sound. But he is still looking every time I bring it in. The last time it was in the Tech told me the next time I hear it to bring the car directly to him. So far it hasn't popped up again for me to do so.

Keep me posted if you find something on your car.................... Thanks

I've had a buzz/rattle since day one. I put some bags of salt back there the other day (water softener) and it stopped. Next time I have it at the dealer I'll mention it (again).

havasuwiley 10-06-2009 09:57 PM

for my noise i,ve been to the dealership, nissan says a ecu is the culprit, its been discussed on forum before, service mge and tech hear same noise nissan is aware, still waiting for fix.:ugh2:

schrute 10-07-2009 12:36 AM

I have it too. Not the high pitch ECU noise some are complaining of but a buzz/rattle from the rear of the interior somewhere.

It happens about 50% of the time and it's starting to bug me. I usually have the radio on but still want to track it down and eliminate it ASAP. I wonder if my wife will ride in the hatch for a mile or two to help me pinpoint it... :shakes head:

schrute 10-20-2009 10:41 AM

I finally isolated the noise (sort of). It's coming from the area where the hatch meets the roof on the passenger side. Either at the back of the headliner or the top of the hatch.

Has anyone had a buzz/rattle from this area and fixed it?

I'll take it to the dealer if I can't figure it out, but I'd rather skip the trip to the dealer if possible.

phelan 10-20-2009 10:43 AM

Nope, but I'm still mildly annoyed by that high-pitched electronic whine that's in the car -_-

I agree that that is the area the noise is coming from. When it does it if I press up on the roof it temporarily stops. No idea how to fix it though and letting the dealer mess with it might very likely make matters far worse.

IHas370Z? 10-20-2009 01:11 PM

I've had this rattle for almost as long as I've had the car. On smooth pavement it's not there, but any/every time I'm anything a bit rough, it's there. Really annoying and I hope someone finds a fix.

rudi 10-20-2009 04:26 PM

I've been experiencing a similar rattling/buzzing sound on particular road surfaces. I originally thought it was coming from the back now I think it's the drivers side window. I found that if I hold the window up button the noise stops.

Hope the salt was sealed.

cpehaot 10-20-2009 06:41 PM

I have similar rattle from day 1. On mine, the back retractable cover is rattling.

Gaiiden 10-20-2009 08:48 PM

I've heard this, but not often. Maybe once or twice. Then again I am deaf enough to say "What?" to anyone farther than 5ft from me talking in a normal voice :P

:icon17: Now that sounds like an OG response

AH370Z 10-21-2009 10:16 PM

Yep Ive heard this buzz/rattle in rear aswell, from day 1. Not what you want to hear on a brand new car

schrute 10-22-2009 12:51 AM

I've got some stealth rear turn signal bulbs to install this weekend, or sooner, that pretty much requires removal of a good chunk of the rear interior to get to the bulbs. Since I'll have half the hatch out I'll try to get in there under the headliner to find the nasty buzz/rattle and kill it. Wish me luck. I'll take pics.

vipor 10-22-2009 02:44 PM

I have a fuel pump noise from the RR of the car, not too loud, just hear it under initial throttle blips. I don't hear it while on the highway or listening to the radio over a volume of 10 (non-Bose thank God.) I've read horror stories about the ECU noises though.

AH370Z 10-27-2009 07:36 PM

Any updates on this? Its driving me crazy, every time I go over a bump I hear this rattle, sounds like it might even be the rear cross bar in the hatch.

Mark5092 10-27-2009 08:39 PM

I have 1800 miles on my car and no noises or rattles.

I have the same noise (buzz) and found that if you press on the (rear area) headliner it goes away? Any info on what is causing this?

schrute 10-27-2009 10:38 PM

^rear of the headliner here too. I used to think it was from that crossbar but it's not. I haven't had time to take the hatch seal off to get under the headliner yet but I will. I'll take pics.

schrute 11-01-2009 02:26 AM

I attacked my rattle tonight and I'm pretty sure it's gone. Details > http://www.the370z.com/members-370z-...tml#post261757

j.arnaldo 11-01-2009 10:34 AM

Wierd stuff, dudes. Thank God, my '04.5 Touring Coupe's holding up pretty good. I've only had to replace the driver's side power window motor. Otherwise, it's been a sweet beaZt, so far. Ain't EVER getting rid of her, as long as God helps me hang in there (the $505.46 monthly note's kinda steep!) Greetings from Puerto Rico!

kinetoz 01-27-2010 09:00 AM

Am having the same problem. Service tech did not hear the noise. Occurs when car is warm and is driven over rough pavement. I do not want to get into taking the headliner apart etc.

KingZee 02-26-2010 08:42 PM

I've had this issue from day 1 as well. I'd really like to get rid of it. Shcrute, I read your Journal but I have a base model no sports package so I don't have the XM antenna and hence don't have that wire so it's definitely not that for me but the described noise is pretty much exactly what I'm hearing in my car. Anyone get to the bottom of this?

schrute 02-26-2010 10:47 PM

Kingzee, last time I was under the headliner adding dynamat I got to checking out the hole you see in the upper right of the pic below. There are two roof panels that are sandwiched together at the hole. I wrapped some dynamat around the edge of the hole as it seemed like a possible buzz source. Might be worth checking out.

I have a buzz/rattle coming from the rear. When I'm driving, it sounds like it's on the passenger side. When I'm in the passenger seat trying to isolate it, it sounds like it's coming from the drivers side. Very annoying in a $35,000 car.

mikeaqck 04-01-2010 09:55 AM

I had the same rattle in the headliner near the hatch and myself and the Nissan tech actually located it. I don't have the exact specifics but there was something loose on the curtain airbags above the headliner. I duplicated the noise by driving around 50mph and hitting every reflector light on the highway. The tech heard it and he duplicated by tapping on the hatch window. Haven't heard it since. I sure hope this helps.

he tapped on the hatch window from the INSIDE to duplicate? And what do you mean by tap? Like knocked on it gently or socked it? lol

Also, do you know what the tech did to stop this from happening? Did he tighten a screw/bolt or put some tape on something?

This noise is now officially driving me insane. Schrute, has yours stopped completely after all that dynamat?

schrute 04-02-2010 06:53 PM

Yep, all gone. I now have a noise at the base of my windshield that is getting worse, but the noise at the back of the headliner is gone.

Time to buy some dynamat, might just do the entire trunk while I'm at it...is there a website that sells this stuff cheap?

Thanks for all your help btw.

schrute 04-03-2010 03:41 PM

NP! Second Skin is a vendor here and sells a comparable product, their customer service is great (I had an issue and it was taken care of immediately). They did give me some free stuff so in the interest of full disclosure I should mention that...

When I was going after the rattle in my headliner Second Skin was not a vendor here at the time and I just got some Dynamat at the local stereo shop. I'm sure you can do better with Second Skin or somewhere else online. Buying the stuff by the sheet at the local shop is not cheap (won't do that again).

KingZee 04-20-2010 11:46 AM

I never had time to take it apart myself. I actually ended up dropping it off to the dealer this morning...I'll let everyone know what they say. I was also able to reproduce the sound by reaching back from the seat and gently tapping on the rear windshield with two fingers.

I hope they take care of this, I'm now thinking it's coming from the rear hatch and not from underneath the headliner.

kinetoz 04-22-2010 08:09 AM

Buzzing noise? Tech says to replace the support post.

After two test drives in November 09 with a tech the existence and location of the buzzingb noise was identified. Said the noise was coming from the support post that runs across the cabin behind the seats. The part is back ordered and I understand it is supposed to be "released" this month. Still waiting.

KingZee 05-29-2010 09:03 PM

The dealer was useless of course...I took the headliner apart yesterday after work and spent an hour or so on it. I put electric tape on the clips to secure like in Schrute's journal and I reached in deep and felt another block touching the roof. I put a little piece of double sided tape on there as well. I also put a line of double sided tape along the roof right behind the clips immediately before the roof bend. I took the car out last night and didn't hear anything...I'll be more confident that it's gone after driving today.

I now have that noise also! I also have a stress crack from the base of my windshield which is scheduled to be replaced under warranty!

KingZee 05-31-2010 04:32 AM

Noise is still there for me

kinetoz 05-31-2010 09:06 AM

Took it to the dealer for the fifth time. Described the problem based on the forum. (Thank you schrute). Said they fixed a wire. Noise is still there and am taking it back again to dealer today with reference to this post info. Can't believe the dealer does not have a record of this problem and a fix? Am also going to start writing letters.......

Let me know if you need any assistance...I want to know exactly what this noise is coming from...It seems like it's coming from the rear of the headliner but there's nothing there (I don't have that wire like Schrute does) and I can't replicate it once the headliner is off...it's also important to note that when I reach back and tap on the hatch glass with two fingers I can replicate the same noise but when I open the hatch and get back there and do the same I can't. I got this from another post (maybe thread?) about this same problem that was discovered by the dealer.
