Shift knobs

Hello everyone, not sure if this is the right section of the forum for this but my question i have for all of you is What do you guys reccomend for a shift knob?

I am not a big fan of the oem shift knob.

My budget is $150.

I was looking at the Flossy knobs, what do you think?

My interests
-round shape (dont know how i would feel about a stick shape knob)
-heavier than stock for smooth shifting feel
-made with quality material
-texturised
-something that would look good beside the 40th red interior

If you have any knobs for sale let me know aswell

Check out this thread for some ideas :)

I'd highly recommend TWM Performance. Had their shift knob in all my cars and it's purely amazing. Makes every shift orgasmic :P

In my Mazda3; their graphite finish Type R shift knob. Loved it.

That one's a beauty. Love the Specter, it's the best of both worlds.

I have an extra twm piston knob if you're interested, bought one for my buddy when he got his z but he had sold his car a few months later.

StanceZ37 10-06-2014 05:12 PM

im looking more for a ball shape knob and it has to be on the heavy side.. i do like twms knobs, i have been looking at them for awhile until i seen the flossy knobs. What do you guys think about the flossy knobs?

chops 10-06-2014 06:02 PM

look up WC Lathe Werks. i love my stainless steel ball. it actually doesnt even get that hot. my previous aluminum knob was scorching hot after sitting outside for a bit. the steel one surprisingly doesnt get too hot too touch. you can customize it however you want too

There are a few types of flossy knobs, which one are you looking into? pics? weight is important to keep in mind, a heavier knob will makes for smoother and better shifts. Texture and design is different to the twm, and I don't think the flossy knobs are on the same level with twm quality wise, hence the huge price gap. Just sharing my opinion, go with which ever knob makes you most happy :driving:

This is the one i was looking at. flossy shop — RedHead Heavy-Weight

i would also like for the knob to have some kind of texture on it were as my hand wont slip off of it like the oem knob.

i wish i could try some knobs out but yea, that wont happen.. how much are you asking for the piston?

StanceZ37 10-06-2014 07:43 PM

If only i could find a great deal on the tk hebi bebi knob, i feel like that would be the ultimate knob

cooltoy 10-06-2014 07:55 PM

I read that Momo's can be less then durable.

chops 10-06-2014 10:37 PM

here's a WC lathe werks stainless steel ball. weighs 500g+ since the collar is metal as well. whatever knob you get, make sure you get a collar of some sort to match the way our shift boot matches up to the knob

dichoi 10-06-2014 11:12 PM

i used to have the TK hebi bebi. it was nice and all, but a week of using it and it hit me that i paid $250 for a damn shift knob. sold that thing asap and bought the fatboy replica. exact same shape and size of the TK knob, 0.1lbs heavier, and i prefer it since i don't have to worry about trying to align the turtle on top.

The flossy knob is heavier than twm piston, 545 grams vs. 525 gr. IIRC, who would have thought of that! another pro to the flossy is that it's coated in resin which will keep the knob cool in the Summer. If your eyes are already set on the flossy, I'd say go for your first thought.

As for the piston, i'd like $100+5 for shipping. So same price for a new flossy. It's still fairly new, my buddy only used it for a couple months maybe less before he sold his car.

 you have to crank the set screws pretty tight on the momo's...otherwise they tend to loosen. when you crank the set screws though, it bites into the shifter shaft thread... like through the rubber grommet they give you.

i had this problem on my G's momo knob before. i fixed the thread using a thread repair tool, and screwed on the specter knob.

also, youll probably want to get a new momo shift boot with the collar inside which will mate with the bottom of the knob cleanly. :D

:tiphat: Mr. Kenchan! Appreciate the info.
Hubby is an aircraft mech. Hopefully he will be able to "adjust" the fit and set screws so they don't loosen up.

Doesn't that get scorching hot in the summer? thats one thing im worried about.

kenchan 10-08-2014 04:52 PM

i think chops mentioned that they dont get as hot as his other metal knobs.

it also depends on the finish/texture of the knob. ive had metal knobs that got hot but not super hot in the summer months like the twm satin knob.
but then a polished momo got scorching hot.

if you're worried about hot/cold, check out the twm specter. it's weighted brass core with delrin. very nice.

and heres the thing. at first thats what i was looking at but the knob just looks so ugly.. thats why i resorted to the flossy knob.. but its like i dont want to go out and spend $100 on something that im not sure about. i dont want to buy a knob now and then find something i like better down the road.. :/

you think the specter knob looks ugly? they look and feel great.

and you cant buy a specter or any of the twm's for 100...

i dont know bro, i think i would have to see what it looks like in the car and yea ik my budget is $150 but if i have to wait for the holidays were prices come down i will.

kenchan 10-08-2014 08:13 PM

the stock knob on the Z is pretty good the way it is.. might want to spend that 150 on something else like GTR push button, clear map lens, etc. get more for your $ if you're on a budget.

one thing i dont recommend is cheaping out on knobs. the feel of the car changes dramatically when you change knobs..and most often than not, you really get wat you pay for. GL!

cooltoy 10-08-2014 08:17 PM

OEM knob is good, but I wish it was shorter.

doesnt get hot at all honestly. ive parked my car in direct sunlight many many times and ive never come back to a knob that was unbearably hot. when i had an aluminum shift knob.... it was a different story. couldnt touch it and carried around a sock in my center console.

sunkist350z 10-08-2014 09:22 PM

I just got my password jdm type II love the feel and weight. Went with the type II because type I looks like a dildo lol.

kenchan 10-09-2014 11:15 AM

type2 looks like an egg and i gave it to some kid in a sentra cause i hated the ergonomics. :icon17:
nearly crashed my car when that knob slipped out of my hand... needed wot in 2nd to compensate a slide, no 2nd :eekdance:

ive got all that basically last thing on my list is a good knob.. i cant stand the feel of the oem knob and i want a heavy knob for smooth shifts. i might look into the spector i just want to find a pic of what it looks like in the car..

cooltoy 10-09-2014 05:22 PM

Not quite the Specter, but this gives you an idea. Just imagine a silver portion on the bottom.

hmmm. it looks alright. either way i would have to wait for them to do the big sales on the knobs because its out of my budget atm.
i would also imagine everything would match up good because i have the twm short shifter

after looking around i narrowed my choices to two knobs. The wc lathe werks and the twm spector. Im leaning more towards the wc late werks but now its all down to whether i want the titanium or stainless steel. I want more weight but am in love with the burnt finish of the titanium. so im torn between two.
