what is self healing paint?

will it be on all the new z's?

Alexus 12-28-2008 09:11 PM

Self-healing paint has been around since late 2005, early 2006 in the Japanese market and is the byproduct of the Japanese's obsession with cleanliness. It has been available since early 2007 on Nissan's Infiniti products, and no current Nissan model has it aside from the Infiniti ones (I'm not even sure the GT-R has it), if memory serves me correctly.

They call it Scratch Guard. It's basically a coating as thick as a normal coat of paint which goes over the clear coat of your car. The paint will fix itself after it had experienced a scratch that has not penetrated the Scratch Guard coat; allegedly pouring hot water over the affected surface speeds up the process. The Scratch Guard basically contains a highly elastic resin that mends itself over time when it is exposed to a heat source such as the sun.

Another one of Nissan's countless innovations. I'm not sure if the new Z will have it. Maybe it'll be extra.

I'm hoping the new Z gets it. It's going to be another $400 if they offer it as an option. But here in Los Angeles, it's a requirement. You can't go 10 feet without someone bumping your car, opening a door into it, or a bird crapping on it.

On a side note, if you part a car in a parking lot that holds 20,000 cars, and only 15 cars are parked in it, and you park in the very back nearly 400 feet from the entrance, it's a guarantee that some jerk is going to park RIGHT NEXT TO YOU!

LiquidZ 12-30-2008 11:58 AM

I didn't even know such a thing existed.

Crash 12-30-2008 12:06 PM

Yep. There's also a theory about another type of paint called "nano paint" that will actually even cure deep scratches. No clue when that will ever be made even a concept, but the idea was sound (based on what I was watching).

I love where these new technologies are going lately... Especially because they're green.

LiquidZ 12-30-2008 12:37 PM

I guess I have some googling to do. Know of any good sites to look at regarding the paint?

Crash 12-30-2008 12:42 PM

Nope. Sorry, I saw that on the learning channel a good 2 years ago.

shumby 12-30-2008 08:58 PM

I have the self healing paint on my Black 09 G37s and am interested to see how it will work for the inevitable swrils I will get. It is heat activated. You can clay bar it but it is not recomended to use a power buffer on it. As well it only lasts about 3 years

Crash 12-30-2008 09:09 PM

SHUMBY!!! YOU'RE BACK!!!

Black cars get swirls! Live with it!

shumby 12-30-2008 09:32 PM

not mmy 08 I kept it swril free baby

Alexus 12-31-2008 10:33 AM

Swirl-free, yes, but angel-hair free? Somehow, I doubt that. :P

Crash 12-31-2008 03:28 PM

^^^ Good point. Even WIND screws with black paint.

Alexus 12-31-2008 03:42 PM

Black paint is extremely hard to maintain. Any imperfections become blatantly obvious very quickly.

Crash 12-31-2008 03:45 PM

Yep... So black paint hides body lines and shows paint imperfections. Any questions? Class dismissed. ;)

Say bye-bye to Maaco lol

TomatoEvo 01-08-2009 04:41 AM

Go info. I actually thought it was a joke. :)

Gabriel77 03-17-2009 06:16 PM

Does anyone know if this is just on the metal body parts or also on the plastic such as the bumpers? I got a small scuff near the front wheel well and I'm trying to figure out the best way to handle it.

LenZToy 03-17-2009 07:46 PM

Check out Mequire's Online. They have great suggestions, how-to, and plenty of experieces. I'm sure you'll find something there that will work. Let us know how you decide to handle.

Crash 03-17-2009 07:50 PM

Get a hair dryer and blow some hot air on the scuff for a few minutes.

Self-Healing Car Paint Uses Sunlight To Repair Scrapes

Gabriel77 03-18-2009 09:46 PM

Thanks for the suggestions. Before heating the paint or using a polish on it, I think I'll try parking it in the sun first and see if there's any impact on the scuff mark. I'll try to take before and after pics and post them if it works.

Crash 03-19-2009 01:18 AM

It can take up to a week... FYI. It's the heat that makes the paint heal. The beads that were released from the paint during the scuffing need heat to cure. You can park it in the sun, but don't expect immediate results. Depending on how hot it is out there in Phili, it can take a while.

semtex 03-19-2009 12:57 PM

So...am I to understand that this self-healing paint is standard on US-spec models? Because I just checked the spec list at nissanusa.com and don't see anything about this.

arcticreaver 03-19-2009 07:11 PM

so i guess Summer Time is Healing time for all of us?

tbonesteak 03-20-2009 02:13 PM

i highly doubt it's equipped on the Z.

Forumite 03-27-2009 08:53 AM

I've read reports that it's an option on the Z in metallic form. Would that mean those of us in red and chicane are out of luck?

ADmaster71690 03-29-2009 06:27 PM

I was really hoping for this because I'm going an MB 370... but I shot an email to Nissan Usa who said non of the Z's have it (not standard nor optional). :(
