Dash Melting!

Hopefully that grabbed your attention! So My car sits outside during the middle of the day while I'm taking summer school and it's starting to get into the 90s. I get in it today and notice the top of my dashboard is very sticky and soft. Feels like I can rub off the material with my finger almost. I have no window tint or sunshade. Its only going to get hotter so...

Can anyone recommend a good fitted sunshade? :yum:

Cutted cardboard.

I'm cheap!

theDreamer 06-11-2014 04:52 PM

Bought this one years ago and really like it, when I remember to use it. Fit is great, and not one of those roll up ones. Fits fairly well behind one of the seats but can slide around, I many times put it in the hatch area and reach for it (have long arms).
I park in garages at home & work now so forget many times when I am out & about.

That one actually looks like the Covercraft one I'm looking at on Amazon. Probably the same one. Hard to beat Amazons prices!

The UVS100 is the next purchase I'll be making for the Z. Seems to get good reviews from what I've read.

... Seems like another Nissan problem... FUUCK... Report it to corporate, maybe we can get a recall going in the next few years like they did with the FXs and the Gs (if I'm not mistaken)

Actually I just looked at my brothers 2005 G35. It's got a leather dash, but DAM it doesn't get any better over time! Definitely go buy yourself one if you haven't yet.

shaun66 06-11-2014 05:45 PM

Yep so it's the same one. Only question is now what color?

Green Ice
Blue Metallic
Gold

How exciting :ugh2:

Kenwoodturbo 06-11-2014 06:37 PM

I have the heat shield brand for the nismo and my other vehicles. Fits perfect and combined with my tints the inside stays cool. I don't drive the nismo much but with the tommy kaira shift knob baking in black car in sun I wanted to keep temps down.

I've had heat shield brand in my accord from new in 2008. After almost 100k miles and sitting outside my dash and interior still look like brand new. And 08 accords were known for issues like leather separation on center console in sun etc.

kenchan 06-11-2014 06:57 PM

Same one I use and no issues with dash melting.

I'm digressing a bit, but you should get those 80s louvers on the rear hatch glass. That would be so bad ***!

DjSquall 06-12-2014 08:24 AM

And here I am defrosting my windows....

Oh Canada...

.... Get tints if you don't already, and if your car is out in that kind of heat, definitely get a sun reflector on the windshield.

What % of tint you all recommend, cause I always get 5% or 3%. But with all the blind spots on the Z what would you recommend for rear window tint from your experiences

I'm registered in Cali for right now but also, if I switch to Texas plates what tint you all recommend for the driver/passenger door windows as well

Best heat shield ever, custom made and fitted to the vehicle. I have one for every car.

My Z will be 5 years old in September. 5 days a week at work it has a Covercraft cover on it while sitting in the SoCal sun. About twice a year I give the interior plastic parts and weatherstripping a good treatment with 303 Aerospace and use Zaino leather treatment on the leather. Other than some wear on the crappy Alacantra armrest and minor wrinkling on the left side of the driver's seat leather, the interior looks like new.
Keeping it out of the sun and using a good product like 303 Aerospace makes a lot of difference.

PapoZalsa 06-12-2014 08:43 PM

Get one from Auto Zone or Advance....I'm half cheap :)

I've used the Heatshield brand for many years on all my cars. Living in Fl. I'm much like you with the heat. These sunshields keep it really cool inside all summer.

Here in Texas tint is a must. Try to get your windows tinted asap and use a sunshade. Using a sunshade is better than nothing at all.

I thought the previous owner used a chemical of some sort for I have this problem as well on my nismo. I picked up blinds for my house at home depot, the package was very light and I rested part of it on my dash ,and it made an ugly mark on it. My whole hand sticks to the dam thing!

Louie cat 07-24-2016 01:14 PM

I am thinking of buying a new dash ,I can get one just under a grand, but the dealer wants $1200. to install it. They say it is 8hrs labor and I believe them. I looked at the service manual and boy there is a lot of work involved!
I always keep a shade up and have very dark windows, but will make sure I keep that shade up everyday if I go through that expense!

I wrapped mine in Alcartara,S$1800.

zguynate 08-18-2016 10:31 PM

The crazy thing about this is I'm having the same issue. Mine almost turned gray and was real sticky to the touch. The weird thing about it though is my dash hasn't seen sunlight in a year since its been blown up in the garage... I have no clue why it's doing it. There was no moisture or anything in the Z. Just the dash being weird.

Nixin 08-19-2016 07:33 AM

I do not believe that this is just a Nissan or 370Z issue. Cheap materials, the sun, the cold, etc. can all cause premature dash fading. IMHO some of the brand name products that we use to 'beautify' our dash/interiors are the major culprits, hence the sticky, cracking and melting of the dash. I love the idea of wrapping the dash in alcantara but it is expensive.

My Z is a garage queen. and when it is parked in the sun, a sunshade is always placed at the windshield, and those are almost rare occasions. In Louisiana, Cold is not something we know too much about ... Also, I have NEVER used anything on my dash except damp rag to wipe the dust off. Just recently, to clean up the sticky mess, I found a specific Dash Cleaner with no harsh chemicals (took some doing - I'll post the name when I get home...) and used that to clean the mess up. I also do not happen to think the dash on the Z is made of any cheap materials to any extent...

I can safely say that none of the culprits you mentioned are what is causing my dash to have the melt-down look. I believe it is a defect from the factory. :shakes head:

Yeah same here. I just use a dry microfiber towel to wipe dust off. After the sticky stuff appeared I did soap and water. No luck yet. I actually put it out in the sun and it got real sticky, then I cleaned it again and it got a little better. But I think as it sits, it's getting sticky again.

Spooler 08-19-2016 04:20 PM

I did 70% Ceramic tint on my front window to help with this issue along with a 6in 4% strip at the top. I also only use a damp cloth to clean the dash.
