you're going to need more force than painter's tape... see if you can clamp it.
if not, get some styrofoam block and a rod and use your garage wall or door or something solid to put pressure on the area.

and yah, if there's no adhesive left, you'll want to squeeze a few small pieces in there to make it adhere.
