Help! Calling all the Headlight Retrofit Guys

Now I have another question wich I looked all over the place but I did not get a concrete answer anywhere regarding that black tab on the cutoff shield is it really needed to cut it off if so how much of it?
Also the spacers should I use the metal ones or the paper ones? I read a lot of different stuff about it so now I am rather unsure what to do here since there is really no room for f*ck up's
