Mine's CF add on wing

1 Attachment(s)
First I could not be any more disappointed in the workmanship of the Mine's CF wing.
When it first arrived, the inner edges were very roughly cut and they didn't even bother to put clear coat on it. It also had scratches and bubbles. I waited over 2 months to get these and I wasn't going to wait another 2 months to get this one replaced so I just decided to keep it. It's been a little over 2 months since the purchase and it has started to form a haze on the inner parts of the wing. Is this something that can be fixed or should I have them replace this? You can clearly see the white part where they didn't clearcoat...:shakes head: I'm afraid that the haze will only get worse.

Apoc370z 09-17-2013 07:00 PM

And thats an authentic mines addon spoiler?

FairladyZ10PG 09-17-2013 07:02 PM

Yup

Amuse370z 09-17-2013 07:19 PM

I think all owners of this add-on have this problem.

FairladyZ10PG 09-17-2013 07:31 PM

Any way to prevent it from getting worse?

Wow, really?

Guess I'm glad I didn't order the authentic one. For 600+ dollars i'd be pissed.

Minato 09-17-2013 09:44 PM

The only real way to fix this would be to sand the oxidation off, then clear coat with a quality automotive clear.

Wonka2581 09-17-2013 09:50 PM

Good god that looks like SHI*

370Z JT 09-17-2013 10:15 PM

I had similar issues with Top Secret front lip. LOL

JDM what!

FairladyZ10PG 09-17-2013 11:43 PM

I tried polishing it but didn't work. Guess I'm going to have to get this re-cleared. I think that's what simota did. So disappointed...
first time I've been disappointed with a jdm product.

Ztoon 09-18-2013 12:10 AM

I've had my Mine's cf wing and frt. lip on for a few years now and the white hazing began almost immediately on the lip, not so much on the wing. The cf seams and joins were kinda sub-par as well. Hard to continue giving these guys support.
I decided to try replica cf parts on my other vehicle, and the quality and durability was top notch for much less money.

CarbonSignal 09-18-2013 12:25 AM

I will suggest just sand it down nicely with 1500/2000 grit paper then clearcoat with dupont 3800 clearcoat (we use it as it blocks UVA & UVB)

Most of the companies dont offer clear coat as its an additional job of sanding the piece then clear coating more like painting then buffing and polishing it.

do you have a zoomed out shot from the top? it looks different from mine... the screw mounting hole location mainly.

mine is over 2yrs old, looks like new still.

This is the first day I got it.

Chuck33079 09-18-2013 12:00 PM

That sucks. I wanted one of these. So it'll be ok if you re-clear it before you put it on?

i always recommend re clearing all carbon pieces that are outside the vehicle.... anything in the engine bay or interior especially you can get away without clearing them.... i believe its the prime thing you should do to protect your investment on the carbon... i have alot of friends with cf hoods that just polish there hoods.... some of them even buy the special polish for cf.... (forgot the name but it lasts longer then just waxing it) but i dont understand why they dont just clear coat the damn cf and just treat it like paint after that  everything cf will turn ugly faded white frosted and yellow gel coat if not clear coated in the beginning... speaking of this... i needa shoot some clear coat on my hood :roflpuke2: maybe next month

:( i only use wax on mine, but then my car is garaged during the week so...

kenchan 09-18-2013 03:30 PM

i used krylon UV protectant on my ings+ CF splitter since it came unprepped. sanded, touched up some rough spots, cleaned, and shot it with the UV coating (rattle can), then polished.

turned out nice and shiny. no issue on it either. some picts in my albums page.

Nubz 09-18-2013 03:33 PM

And I wanted one of those too. Is there another company making these...if anyone knows??

vividracing 09-18-2013 03:46 PM

Sorry to see the issue, we've been clearing a ton of CF parts from all different manufacturers recently and its made a world of difference for the longevity.

OMGWTFBBQ 09-18-2013 05:17 PM

Well, a heads up about most JDM carbon products. They usually come only covered with a "gel" coating. This means they aren't protected against UV damage and that sort. That way, you can decide whether you want it painted to match your vehicle or to just shoot clear on it and call it a day.

Whenever you get any carbon fiber product for your vehicle, as Simota already said, you should definitely have a reputable body shop shoot a layer of UV protecting clear coat on it. I've done it with all of my parts, whether it be Craft Square or Zele and I'm definitely doing it with my Varis hood when it comes in next month.

FairladyZ10PG 09-18-2013 05:52 PM

I wish I knew sooner...

Amuse370z 09-18-2013 06:11 PM

Off topic: does anyone have the evo-r b pillar covers? How is the quality of the cf?

for a dd that's not bad advice at all especially in places like arizona, vegas, and socal where the rays are especially strong.

for me though, i haven't coated anything on my mines or cs mirrors, front fang cover other than Griot's wax. :icon17: no issue for me.

OMGWTFBBQ 09-18-2013 06:55 PM

Oh. Mine's not a DD. It'd be a miracle if my Z saw sunlight for more than a week out of the year LOL. It sits inside a showroom/warehouse most of its life haha.

My wife calls it, the car that goes no where. :ugh2:

FairladyZ10PG 09-19-2013 03:46 PM

Stopped by my paint shop today and decided to let them do it professionally. $100. I think it's reasonable and they use the top of the line clear coat. Problem solved. :)

Zbrah 09-19-2013 03:48 PM

Sweet! can you pm me which shop you used?

 awesome!

FairladyZ10PG 09-19-2013 04:55 PM

Am I going to run into any problem taking the wing off the car? specifically the 3m tape. I'm thinking of using a heat gun to make the process easier.

yah, definitely be very careful how you pull up cause the resin can crack.
just take your time.

tturbo370z 09-19-2013 11:05 PM

Yeah I was kinda pissed when I got my mines add on also. I thought what a pos. it sucks doing the whole jdm thing when u can get knock offs less than half the price with better craftsmanship :shakes head: I'm gonna just fill mine in with bondo to make it look like one big wing and wrap over it. Sucks it cost so much to just do that but I wanted to stay jdm. I hope prepping and clearing it works out for you OP

FairladyZ10PG 09-19-2013 11:43 PM

Yea the owner said he'll be able to make the haze parts disappear. I'm getting it done next Monday. I'll keep everyone posted.

Took the wing off using heat gun. Took about 15mins. These tapes really do the job. They just won't come off easy. I will be dropping off the wing tomorrow morning. Hopefully the shop won't take too long. My car looks weird without the wing now lol.
