My new 2011 was 3.8 on the hood. The condition of the paint is the main reason why I traded it for a vette. Only had the Z for 3K miles.

I know everyone on forums complains about whatever car's paint, but the Z is truly horrible. I've been polishing cars for 20+ years and I've never seen paint this bad & difficult to work with. My Honda, with 110,000 miles, has better looking paint. If you were to look at both and ask 'Which one has 10,000 miles and which one has 110,000 miles?", 9 out of 10 people would say the Z.

All new paints sucks thanks to the government.

My 2008 Wrangler had horrible paint! It couldn't stand up to tree trunks, shopping carts, or the occasional Tundra Wookie. No plans on off roading this bad boy :shakes head:

Many cars have almost double the amount of paint japanese cars have. BWM for example has 180microns or 7.1mils of paint. I don't see hows its a goverment issue if only one region of cars uses thin paint and no one else does.

kenchan 08-21-2013 09:39 AM

it's more in the company's environmental policy, i think. but im sure the goverment likes manufacturers that are eco friendly.

i donno. im really careful with my paint so i have no issues even if it is thin.

Today I was testing a new paint mil gauge which is a ETG2. Couldn't believe the results.
Hood - 4.1mil
Roof - 4.1 mil

New Jeep Wrangler hood - 8.1 mil

This measurement includes ecoat, base, and clear......

That's about as thin as our windshields. I just got another stone chip in my windshield yesterday - never had this problem with my other cars.

I have 9,000 miles on my car and probably 5-10 rock chips in my windshield and I definitely don't tailgate people.

Seriously, the amount of rock chips I have on my windshield is ridiculous.

kenchan 08-21-2013 02:24 PM

hummm.... is that because your area use mostly concrete vs asphalt?

im finding more frontal damage driving own roads that are concrete vs asphalt.

Thankfully I have only 1 chip in the windshield so far, and its pretty minor. I stopped counting the number of chips on the front end. Someday I'll just get a CF Hood and a real paint job.
