2013 Z Paint Mil Results

Today I was testing a new paint mil gauge which is a ETG2. Couldn't believe the results.
Hood - 4.1mil
Roof - 4.1 mil

New Jeep Wrangler hood - 8.1 mil

This measurement includes ecoat, base, and clear......

Sadly, I am not surprised. I went through it with my G37 and now the Z.. the paint quality is absolutely TERRIBLE.

m3chhawk 08-19-2013 09:29 PM

Yulp, Nissan paint, not surprised.

synolimit 08-20-2013 12:09 AM

Find a 08+ subi to do! I wager $5 its lower! If its not then the clean is as soft as a dried dead leaf.

DarkJak 08-20-2013 12:36 AM

Not surprising. I've got so many chips on the bumper and hood. I wonder how thick paint coats were on older German cars.

axmea? 08-20-2013 12:43 AM

We're supposed to paint it every two years right?

Fixed

I counted over 20 little chips on mine and I said meh, it is what it is. No sense stressing over it. I'd never enjoy the car if I worried about it that much. I'll paint it next year or something. Get a hood and a new bumper perhaps. Now what can I sell out of my house to fund this thing? hmmmmm.

jburke26 08-20-2013 09:10 AM

Doesn't surprise me at all....

1st 08-20-2013 10:42 AM

That’s so upsetting! I wonder if it has anything to do with cost. This car seems solid but there are a few other things that piss me off on quality. Fuse box/reservoir in the engine bay it just seems flimsy. But I’m not hating on the Z it’s a beast of a car.

kenchan 08-20-2013 10:50 AM

The more reasons to keep a good coat of wax. :)

Bret86944 08-20-2013 10:52 AM

Google tells me most new cars have less than 5 mils.

03WhiteGT 08-20-2013 11:14 AM

My new 2011 was 3.8 on the hood. The condition of the paint is the main reason why I traded it for a vette. Only had the Z for 3K miles.

scottIN 08-20-2013 11:15 AM

I know everyone on forums complains about whatever car's paint, but the Z is truly horrible. I've been polishing cars for 20+ years and I've never seen paint this bad & difficult to work with. My Honda, with 110,000 miles, has better looking paint. If you were to look at both and ask 'Which one has 10,000 miles and which one has 110,000 miles?", 9 out of 10 people would say the Z.

Ubetit 08-20-2013 12:23 PM

All new paints sucks thanks to the government.

falconfixer 08-20-2013 01:02 PM

My 2008 Wrangler had horrible paint! It couldn't stand up to tree trunks, shopping carts, or the occasional Tundra Wookie. No plans on off roading this bad boy :shakes head:

Many cars have almost double the amount of paint japanese cars have. BWM for example has 180microns or 7.1mils of paint. I don't see hows its a goverment issue if only one region of cars uses thin paint and no one else does.

kenchan 08-21-2013 09:39 AM

it's more in the company's environmental policy, i think. but im sure the goverment likes manufacturers that are eco friendly.

i donno. im really careful with my paint so i have no issues even if it is thin.

That's about as thin as our windshields. I just got another stone chip in my windshield yesterday - never had this problem with my other cars.

I have 9,000 miles on my car and probably 5-10 rock chips in my windshield and I definitely don't tailgate people.

Seriously, the amount of rock chips I have on my windshield is ridiculous.

kenchan 08-21-2013 02:24 PM

hummm.... is that because your area use mostly concrete vs asphalt?

im finding more frontal damage driving own roads that are concrete vs asphalt.

Thankfully I have only 1 chip in the windshield so far, and its pretty minor. I stopped counting the number of chips on the front end. Someday I'll just get a CF Hood and a real paint job.

Ridgerunner 08-22-2013 12:15 AM

After I brought my 2009 Z home and clayed and buffed and waxed it, my wife said the paint looked better on my 2001 Mustang GT.

damian_mb 08-22-2013 01:06 AM

Had clear bra put on my car the same week and couldn't be happier.

The WRX is next, still sitting at 10 miles until it's bra'd. :)

That is the way to do it. Protect your investment, it's worth it.

ProjectDShft 08-27-2013 02:07 PM

yeah i found out how damn thin the paint is on my 2013 the other day when i decided to pull the 370Z badge off and managed to rub down to bare metal with my finger trying to pick off the 3M tape
