I've seen many pics of JDM Z34s with tail-lights that look just like the US version's. What gives? Are these clear lights some sort of option or dependent upon trim

I've seen many pics of JDM Z34s with tail-lights that look just like the US version's. What gives? Are these clear lights some sort of option or dependent upon trim level?
Or was it just the few Japanese guys with taste who swapped out their ugly white tail-lights for red ones?
