Under the emblems

4 Attachment(s)
I'm sorry if this has already been posted, but I have seen a lot of posts asking about what is under the emblems. I took mine off today and painted them, so I took pictures to share with you guys. The front emblem is larger than the back, in case anybody wanted to know.

frost 06-14-2009 04:50 PM

Thanks mate.

nogoodname 06-14-2009 04:52 PM

nice, blacked out emblems

taking off 370 Z is easy, how'd you do the Nissan emblems??

cwj370 06-14-2009 05:03 PM

Yes the 370Z was really easy, the front nissan was a little more difficult, the back was a b**ch! The back one fits tighter in the indention I think. It was hard to get the fishing line under it and then to saw it back and forth without dragging it on the paint and cutting the area outside of the indention. I did just that before I realized how careful I needed to be. Just a small place and its just below the emblem so it does show, thank goodness! But be warned the paint is very very easy to scratch, don't get in a hurry, work slow and careful!

frost 06-14-2009 05:07 PM

Did you heat it up at all, or just went with the fishing line?

nogoodname 06-14-2009 05:09 PM

fishing line is the best !! no doubt

use some turtle wax bug and tar remover to get rid of some old glue.

also, how are you putting them back on??, the glue is all off....

cwj370 06-14-2009 05:32 PM

I heated it up a little bit, but a little afraid to heat it much. The paint on the car is so soft, I was scared it would be even easier to scratch.
Mostly just rolled the glue off with my fingers (no nails) it came off pretty easy. Thats what I'm doing in one of the pictures, no sweat really. What was left, I used a little alcohol on a soft rag and it came right off.
I am going to use 3M super strength molding tape (Auto Zone) to put them back.

nogoodname 06-14-2009 05:34 PM

take some pics for us, did you put a clear coat on the black paint??

also, did you sand all the chrome off, then primer it??

cwj370 06-14-2009 05:41 PM

I'll take some pictures when I get everything back on and post them. Yes I sanded item with 800 grit paper, not all the chrome but all the shiny. I am putting a clear coat on them, wasn't going to, but decided they looked a little dull against all that black shine!

nogoodname 06-14-2009 05:43 PM

ur black Z is gonna look hot !!

overlay the tails & heads and wow

cwj370 06-14-2009 05:45 PM

Also I used Dupli-color black import auto spray and then Dupli-color clear top coat, from Auto Zone.

nogoodname 06-14-2009 05:46 PM

autozone, one stop shop for these kinds of things

frost 06-14-2009 05:46 PM

Any plans for the door handles?

cwj370 06-14-2009 05:48 PM

Funny, I already have the smoked head and tails from bluebat. Just can't find anyone to put them on for me. I tried and screwed the first one up, so I had to reorder. I put up a post showing what it looked like with one head done. Then I pulled the tint off.

nogoodname 06-14-2009 05:49 PM

lol..i wanted to order and install it myself

Bat's a nice guy, just say you messed up the 1st set and he'll charge you a better deal

cwj370 06-14-2009 05:50 PM

Yes I want to do the door handles, but really think I need to leave that for the professionals. I'm not sure I have the skill for that. So maybe a little later.

nogoodname 06-14-2009 05:54 PM

^^ good idea, because the handles are moving parts and used all the time...bad job means peeling, easy chipping paint

cwj370 06-14-2009 06:28 PM

Do you think anybody will make after market painted handles that you can just swap out with these? Probably be to costly. I have no idea what someone would charge to paint them for me. Any idea?

frost 06-14-2009 06:43 PM

I don't think I ever remember seeing any for the 350. If that's true, I'm sure they won't make em for the 70.

BMW Killa 06-14-2009 07:40 PM

Wasnt expecting 4 holes in the rear

cwj370 06-14-2009 09:00 PM

I was surprised too. Thought I had read somewhere that it was smooth under there and the emblems were just on there with tape. I really want to replace these with one that is just the outer ring and then a Z in the middle. Not sure that will work now, not without some body work and that sounds like it will cost a lot.

u155282 06-14-2009 11:06 PM

I can't wait to see you car when you get done with it. You're going the direction I want to when I finally get mine. Thanks for keeping us posted.

zZSportZz 06-15-2009 08:50 AM

Need some pics with the black emblems installed. I have a black car and I'm thinking about doing this as well.

it's no surprise to me, the 370z it just tape, the big Nissan emblems have holes...it was talked about in a debadge thread

miguez 06-15-2009 11:43 AM

Great info cwj, thank you!

chubbs 06-15-2009 12:46 PM

Thanks for the thread and the pics - it's always best to know what's lurking under your burger.

Ok, everything is back in place. I'm not going to say what I think until I hear from you. Don't want to influence your response either way.
First a couple of before.

Few more

is the Z on the rear wonky? or is it the camera angle?

Edit - just seen the second batch of pics and it looks ok from the left angle.

Personally, I'd wait for a good aftermarket Z badge to come out - even though you've done a very good job of painting the burger black, at the end of the process it's still a nissan burger.

So, I say put a Z in the middle of the rear and debadge the '370Z' completely. I'm sure the Z that you currently have on the rear would fit inside the car nicely somewhere. For example, on my 350z I have taken the back off a 350z silver pin and stuck it on the front of the gear shift surround - looks really good. - I'll get a pic posted.

Last ones.

nogoodname 06-15-2009 02:23 PM

looks good !! but i'd remove the Z completely

the black paint on the Z's have lots of sparkles.....lol..the G has nothing...just black

the befores, you can see the word Nissan b/c it's black on chrome.....would it be a radical idea if you did it inverted, blacked out emblem with white paint to spell out Nissan...??

cwj370 06-15-2009 02:24 PM

Oh, I just noticed that in the before shots there is one with one headlight tinted and one not. Which do you like best?

nogoodname 06-15-2009 02:30 PM

it's hard to tell, i missed it until you said it.

needs a darker tint, with projector cut outs

cwj370 06-15-2009 02:52 PM

350Z Front Emblem - "Z" logo Black Pearl :: CourtesyParts
This is the one that I wanted, was just waiting on it to be done with the 370's Z
in place of the 350's. After seeing whats under the badges, I don't think it will work.

cwj370 06-15-2009 02:54 PM

I'll probably have to go with one like this, just wish they would make it with the new Z.

nogoodname 06-15-2009 03:09 PM

the 1st link is nice, but like you said...it probably wont work out well....the 2nd link, not digging it..lol

i'd keep the ones you have and remove the letter Z on the rear.......it would be interesting to see blacked out emblems like urs with the word Nissan in white or silver.

Sorry to bring this back from the dead but i have One question. Seems like the emblem is extremely hard to remove since the bumper caves in on the edges of the emblem. Where did you pry first on the emblem? what did you use and how did you do it? I wanna try this but it seems like even if you use fishing lines you will scratch paint because the part that you're prying is lower than the rest of the bumper (lower as in caved in), scratching the paint. Can you provide some info on this? Thanks man i appreciate your help.

I just started with the fishing line on one side. Just get it under the edge and hold the line up, not out, up and away from the car. Then just start with a sawing motion keeping the line up and away from the car the whole time. It also helps if it is heated up, we live in Tn. so I just would let mine sit out in the hot sun for a while. But you could use a blow dryer, just don't burn the paint. The other day one of my coworkers wanted me to help her remove some emblems from her truck, when we when out to do it, the truck was so hot you could have fried an egg on it. I ran the line under the emblem an it sliced right through the glue like it was butter! Easiest way to do it!

tbonesteak 07-25-2009 10:37 AM

Awesome. Thanks dude.
