GT-R shift knob on 7AT +pics

4 Attachment(s)
so as i mentioned today i was thinking of fixing a GT-R shift knob on our 7AT, well this afternoon i passed by the body shop to check on my car, and turns out that my friends GT-R was there as well, any ways we though we would test fit the shift knob on my Z and it actually fits and works and shifts perfectly, but if we want it to sit low like the GT-R's there will be some modifications required to make it look like that, well i took some pics they might not be that good but it might give u guys some idea, i will do this i just need to find a place that would do the modification for me to make it sit low.

Red__Zed 07-05-2011 11:29 AM

Hm. Interesting.

zuperman 370 07-05-2011 11:31 AM

very interesting and it slips right on to our gear within seconds with no modifications needed what so ever :D

KaienZ34 07-05-2011 11:37 AM

Thanks man......do i hear group buy? :stirthepot:

KaienZ34 07-05-2011 11:40 AM

Let us know what the shop has to do in order to have it sit real low, make a DIY if you don't mind whenever you have it done.

Yeah. It sits very awkwardly though.

docaam 07-05-2011 11:42 AM

thats sick, can you confirm if that clip which holds our knobs also is used or GTR clip?

lowering wont be a problem as would need some cutting thats all

Econ 07-05-2011 11:54 AM

this is some sweet stuff here.

the only thing that worries me is the labeling on the knob...it will be backwards for our cars....

as far as height is concerned you should be able to just cut the silver piece.

KaienZ34 07-05-2011 11:55 AM

Maybe instead of cutting to lower just put and nice leather or suede boot.

Why would that matter?

pretty cheap/tacky looking to have a $40k sports car with a misbadging....

thats just me tho, im sure plenty of people wouldnt mind.

KaienZ34 07-05-2011 12:07 PM

No one will mind because it comes from a 90K car, and looks way better the the stock one or any of the others out there now.

js1 07-05-2011 12:08 PM

the only thing that i dont like on the gtr shift knob is the shift pattern it has on the top of the knob. its different than the shift pattern on the 370z

That's what econ was saying.

Stick with stock then.

I'm not familiar with the 7at setup. Isnt this "silver piece" threaded?

That would be my thought.

chuckd05 07-05-2011 12:26 PM

oh no.. gtr start button isnt the only OEM part sites will be selling... real soon sigs will have GTR start button and GTR Shift Knob.... I am going to pass this info on to a friend of mine who has an Auto, he constantly talks about how he hates the stock one, maybe he'll pick it up...

on the auto knob are there notches on the top of the metal shifter? of is it just a straight pipe? So cutting wouldnt be an issue at all?

zuperman 370 07-05-2011 12:32 PM

The shift knob sits perfect if u r interested u have to purchase the knob and clips that hold it it is possible to make the shifter shorter but requires some fabrication and cutting I am hevaly considering doing this guys what do you think? Lol

b1adesofcha0s 07-05-2011 12:42 PM

I think it would look really nice. In for pics once you get it lowered

That would be my thought.

not sure however you are probably right in that it's threaded (rather than just a slide off and clip)

Jamaica 07-05-2011 02:02 PM

needs s shift boot.....

Yeah. My concern would be you'd have to rethread it after cutting it Dow

Apoc370z 07-05-2011 03:03 PM

If you can take the piece out and get a CF wrap or have someone make a CF version of it. Shouldnt be a problem.

zuperman 370 07-05-2011 03:19 PM

Question is will it be hard to shorten the gear to make it shorter I mean? Has anyone attempted that yet or know what is required in the process ?

zuperman 370 07-05-2011 03:36 PM

For the booth I was thinking of custom making a leather booth just like the one for the maual booth and using the gtr knob what do u guys think?

Econ 07-05-2011 03:56 PM

i think yes.

XwChriswX 07-05-2011 04:22 PM

But the US Spec GT-R Knob will be in a different badging for shift positions correct? We need the JDM Spec knob so the manual mode is on the Left? :icon08:

js1 07-05-2011 05:20 PM

Where would we be able to purchase the jdm spec gtr automatic shift knob

KaienZ34 07-05-2011 05:29 PM

Does the shift pattern really matter? It's jut P-R-N-D....

Well in all reality know, but in terms of taste, and it fitting the part I would think you'd like it to match. I wouldn't buy one just because it's from a GT-R and fap on it for that. But if it still is aesthetically pleasing and matches then hell yeah.

Might as well just take the GT-R badge off of one and glue it on a Z, same idea... Would just just as tacky if it wasn't done right with a GT-R kit and all. :icon17:

KaienZ34 07-05-2011 05:48 PM

If they have a better shifter i'd go for that. I never will put the gtr start on the Z, i just don't like how the red looks very out of place. It doesn't matter if it came out of a lambo, it just looks dumb the only peice of red in the whole car.

I thought the same thing when I was trying to do a black/blue theme. But now that I'm doing a Black/Red theme, it fits in. I have a few more ideas for internal parts to be red so we'll see how that goes.

But in terms of the shifter itself, I know at least with me as anal retentive as I am, if I have it there and the pattern on the knob doesn't match the pattern on the tranny, it will bug me. lol :icon17:

KaienZ34 07-05-2011 06:09 PM

I hear ya, i think the red start is great in a 40th or like you said with other red bits. I'm the only one who ever drives my car and the pattern wouldn't matter to me. No one around here gives a crap about the Z enough to even notice that the pattern is different. If there is a JDM shifter around and i have the money i'll go with that, but it's not a deal breaker for me. To each their own....

Imtired 07-05-2011 06:16 PM

Props for taking the plunge!

I was thinking of ways to lower the knob when I replaced mine and thought about just cutting the metal shaft a bit but there are a few things to consider. You still need to be able to use the pin to secure the knob, and the white inner piece needs to still fit and have enough travel to change gears.

Aesthetically, The GT-R knob definitely needs to sit lower, especially since it has a flat bottom portion that isn't tapered like the Z.

Matches all the red gauges. Close enough anyways. I set my car home app + Torque on my docked phone to a red theme to match the gauges as well, and swapped the dome lights w/ red LEDs too (not so blinding when you use them at night, vs white). Red's a good color inside the 370 :)

KaienZ34 07-05-2011 06:27 PM

That's why the shifter would go well with a nice leather/suede boot.

You have other red bits, so the red start should look good. Stock Z's do not have any red. At least mine doesn't have any red.

Doc our clips will not hold the gtr knob when purchasing the gtr knob also purchase the gtr knob clip I think it's around 2 or 3 $ only :D as for cutting yeh it is possible but I don't think I'll cut it's to much of a headache I might custom a leather booth exactly like the one used for the MT I like the design of it and pluse ill have the best of 2 worlds a MT booth/look with a gtr knob = win win :icon17:
