Driveway paint job (satin black)

9 Attachment(s)
Well I wanted my car to be satin black was sitting around with a couple buddies and decided we were going to paint it, in the driveway, lol... I know a lot of people are going to hate on it, if so keep your comments to yourself they don't do anyone any good. Everyone I know that sees it loves it and we all think it turned out great as well.

leighspped 05-16-2011 01:10 PM

so the only thing is why did you wrap it? it sounds a lot easier and keeps your paint factory fresh....

tjlazer 05-16-2011 01:12 PM

I can definately see doing this to an old Z (like a Z31,32) etc. Pretty good and a cheap mod. But on a 370Z? Ouch.

Solus 05-16-2011 01:12 PM

because wrapping it is like $3000 and I painted my entire car for $400

c41006 05-16-2011 01:13 PM

Solus 05-16-2011 01:14 PM

and it doesn't really matter to me because I am not getting rid of it. Once things pick up for me again I am going to end up turning this one into a track car so the loss in value doesn't matter.

like I said the loss in value doesn't matter to me because I wont get rid of it lol... I'm just waiting for business to pick up again turn this one into a track car then get a new one or the 135i not sure which yet

kielbasa16 05-16-2011 01:17 PM

Cant see enough detail from your photos to comment on the overall quality, but wow what a project to take on yourself at home. I think it looks baller, hats off for a crazy project! :tiphat:

As far as the quality goes the only negative thing I have heard from anyone that has seen it (to include a couple of the shops around here) was one guy saying he didn't like the color itself and isn't a fan of the "murdered" look.

Had a guy ask me to do it to his BMW M6 but seeing as how it is a $100k+ car I am not going to lol.

90 ST 05-16-2011 01:19 PM

I think it looks alright, in pics, but would be curious how it looks up close.
Props for out of the box thinking with it!

Jeffblue 05-16-2011 01:20 PM

so you made your baby do all the work while you and your friends sat inside? put them to work while they are young!

looks like it came out nice, good job. what did you actually DO to make it satin?

A.J@CarbonSignal 05-16-2011 01:20 PM

Surely you got balls doing this on your driveway lol

Get more pics if possible :)

kielbasa16 05-16-2011 01:21 PM

Meh, as long as you cant tell that it was painted in a driveway theres no reason to get hung up on people hating on the color. You chose it cuz you like it - all that matters.

Answering this is when the haters come out lol. We sanded it down went to autozone bought a bunch of satin black krylon spray paint and painted it lol

I agree with both of these statements. Looks good... in distant pictures. Definitely have some balls repainting your $30k+ car in your driveway.

370Ztune 05-16-2011 01:55 PM

Looks good!

Painting a car doesn't take a rocket scientist. It's all in the prep work. If you have a good enough eye to spot imperfections during the priming and sanding, and you make sure to wipe down the substrates with wax and grease remover, chances are that you'll have no problem with it turning out good. This is a prime example of good prep work.

Also, matte paints tend to hide minor surface imperfections like dirt or sanding scratches until you get up very close.

 OP!

kenchan 05-16-2011 02:06 PM

Wait, wat just happened??

phelan 05-16-2011 02:08 PM

Yes, good prep work. Wouldn't do it myself, but hey your car

Solus 05-16-2011 02:35 PM

We all know it is all in the prep work because we do most everything ourselves to include paint and body work and have spray painted several vehicles and got them to turn out where noone knows it is spray paint or says anything other than "who did your paint job and can I get their info". Painting really does boil down to prep work and wet sanding. We spent every bit of 30 hours per person between 3 of us sanding it during the stripping and priming process and I dont even want to think about how much time we spent wet sanding between coats of paint.

As to the fella that made a comment about "keep your comments to yourself, you know you posted it on a public forum right". Obviously I am intelligent enough to realize I posted it on a public forum or else I wouldn't be expecting anyone to make any comments would I? Furthermore, although I did post it on a public forum I am also very familiar with the forum rules and regulations, and know I was well within my right state of mind to make sure and let everyone know if they are gonna hate just dont say anything, you should probably take a look at them yourself.

Waiz 05-16-2011 02:40 PM

Wow, you spray painted it? :icon17:

Nitemare06 05-16-2011 02:47 PM

Just saying. Donuts in the mud, spray painting a car you just spent 30k on. Now posting pictures of it and telling people if you dont like it dont post? You crack me up.

bflosabre91 05-16-2011 02:47 PM

from the pics, i like it. though i would be nervous to how it looks in person. but if you say it looks good then ill take your word for it. as far as i can tell from the pics, i think it looks good too. Post more pics :)

Yessir we did. We are going to put one more coat on it just for the sake of my sanity (and there is one spot where it didn't turn out perfect because we were painting it in the dark) and when we do that I will take a bunch of pictures from different angles in different light and up close to give a better idea of how it looks. If anyone is in NC/Myrtle Beach are and wants to see it by all means let me know and where you are and the next time I am in your general area I will let you know so we can meet up if you would like. I do a lot of traveling around this area.

Spray painting a Black car at night... Ooook.

The matte looks different/interesting so for what it's worth fair enough. If it came out with no bubbles or debris imprinted in the drying paint good on you for that.

But honestly, the spray painting isn't my  it's the taillights...

Pretty much yeah. I'm glad I could give you a laugh. I do what I want when I want and how I want and live my life to the fullest. If something sounds like fun I go ahead and do it. For instance: Donuts in the clay/mud - What is the worst that is going to happen here? I maybe break something and spend a little money fixing it but had fun in the process? I have to wash it for a long time to get it clean then its like it never happened (what ended up happening)? What is the big deal? I can say I did it and I wasn't disappointed with either of the two incidents you listed. The donuts... nothing happened other than the car got dirty... the paint... everyone that sees it loves it. Don't get me wrong, I love my z, its the 6th one I have owned... but its not like I am taking a GT-3 and doing this... its a pretty cheap sports car that wouldn't be too hard to fix that I don't ever plan on getting rid of.

What is wrong with the smoked taillights?

Actually, I've bit my lip about this in the past, but I never really understood the angst that other people had about mudding the Z. It looked like fun to me, too.

And it may not be for everyone, but it's cool that you did a large-scale project on the Z like this. It may speed up the depreciation, but it's your car, it's your money.

lol that isn't there anymore. It was a joke to piss off the cops because they said mine was too dark when it wasn't so I taped off a z and painted the rest black took it to the station and was like "well you can clearly see all the parts of the taillights that need to be visible for them to be legal so here is my fixit ticket sign off on that and i will be on my way". They are back to being completely smoked now we stripped them and smoked them again while we painted the car

Florida_GATOR 05-16-2011 03:15 PM

ill keep my comments to myself, but i can see this thread getting locked. I like the matte color, but im with chris on the tail lights, makes it look cheap. IMO.

Mike 05-16-2011 03:18 PM

I like it, and if you ever have to touch it up, the matte paints don't need any blending, just shoot the spot.

LoL Okay.

But the whole doing it just as an 'eff you' isn't necessarily a good thing... :ugh2: Just draws bad attention/animosity towards the vehicle, but as with the premise of this thread, to each unto their own. :ugh2:

Still waiting for high quality pics. I'm kinda wondering about matte black vs a gloss black. Since I dunno if we're ever gonna get a dark [better] blue. :ugh2:

Duely noted.

@Florida_Gator

Noticed your RIVRON 3 in your sig. When I was in MOS school in Little Creek my headmate was in RIVRON 1. You guys still get all the high speed low drag stuff before pretty much everyone else?
