Fuel/Temp Gauge Face (Modded)

Here's the last piece of my interior LED lighting modification: the fuel/temp gauge face.

I just got the materials today and will work on it this weekend.

The most economical solution is to print out a custom gauge face, and then permanently modify the gauge face by removing the amber portions. Then mask off unpainted areas and paint the gauge face whatever color you like (mine will be black).

Alex at Black Cat Custom produced the custom gauge face below:

that looks pretty good!

That looks awesome, how did you remove the gauge cover itself though?

The entire assembly needs to be taken apart to get to the clips and pop it out. When putting this gauge face back on, it (in theory) should not require disassembly. Simply pop it back on.

I didn't have any paint thinner around and tried using a dremel, but it ended up eating into the plastic. Once the paint was removed, it was completely clear underneath so paint thinner should've been the way to go. So... I sorta messed up in the process. Right now I'm using epoxy as a filler before filing it down flat and smooth as an attempt to fix it.

Nice!! So is the faceplate something we can order from Black Cat Customs, or is it a one-off? How much was it?

DIGItonium 03-16-2011 11:58 PM

Not the face plate, but the gauge overlay. It's the same one they use for custom gauge faces. It is nearly as thick as a credit card.

2theextreme is the first to have custom gauge faces for the oil temp and battery voltage gauge. I modded his gauges a few months ago with the same white on black scheme. However, the backlight is blue and the needles are white. I didn't have the means to test it, but he should have it in soon. Again, you can order these gauge faces from Black Cat Custom as well.

The ones I have are prototypes, and he has not set a firm price on them yet. You can browse his product offerings to get an idea how much it will cost.

Post #1 and DIY page updated! Despite not having my car around, I still managed to finish the gauge face. Today was supposed to be the day I pop this thing back in and take some pictures! :(

Car finally came back from the body shop, so I managed to pop the gauge face back in. Post #1 updated with installed photos!
