Has anyone received and installed the light yet?

wstar 05-14-2009 12:56 PM

JDM_ED has the rear light installed, saw it last night at the Houston meetup, but he hasn't wired up a switch to use it yet.

I'm happy to report that my working J Spec rear fog light has been installed and is working quite well.

I had a dealer do the actual work but it was a fairly painless - we ordered a spare "heated seat" switch to put in the center (unused) space between the driver and passenger heated seat switches and it works perfectly.

The light came from motorsportauto.com plus the cost of the switch (about $17) and about two hours of labor.

I don't know how often I'll ever actually use the rear fog but the real thing is a lot more attractive than the dummy unit our American spec cars get plus it's nice to know the light is there if conditions warrant using it.

This is the "dummy unit" that was removed. The differences between the dummy unit and the functional unit is primarily the lens itself and the bulb assembly.

The "center" switch is the switch that controls the rear fog - it is a "heated" seat switch and occupies a space that is usually empty (covered by a "blank" switch cover - no cutting was required).

Functional Unit installed but turned off

This is the unit turned on - it will only operate if the car is running.

These images were taken with my camera phone and not in the best lighting conditions but hopefully they are good enough to give everyone an idea of what the unit looks like installed and turned on!

Pricing please

Could you please post or PM a price for install from the dealership. Thanks

Robert_Nash 05-26-2009 09:36 AM

I don't have my invoice in front of me but I believe that the price, including about $19 or so for the switch was about $230 (that does not include the price of the fog light assembly itself which is about $130).

A bit steep but he did spend a good couple of hours on it - I suspect that when they do my next one I'll be able to negotiate the labor down since they'll now know exactly what has to be done.

Body Control Module (BCS) pdf

It appears that the rear fog lamp circuit is fully wired all the way to the Body Control Module (BCM). The BCM is basically a small CPU unit separate from the main ECU that resides down at the bottom of the outer side of the passenger footwell that handles a lot of little body electrical things like wipers, map lights, flashers, headlights, foglights, etc. BCM is covered in the "BCS.pdf" section of the Service Manual.

Pin 24 on connector M120 of the BCM has an orange wire plugged into it which drives the fog light with a 12V signal directly (diagram is on pg 52 of BCS.pdf). I haven't confirmed this with a continuity tester or anything yet, but it's not likely that it's disconnected anywhere in the middle.

Odds are high that if you put a light back there and swapped in the Canadian version of the headlight/wiper control sticks module, it would Just Work, or worst case, would need some programming a dealer could do to enable the fog light.

Alternatively (more likely what I'll try to do), it would be easy to snip the orange wire near the BCM connector and run it to that unused center console switch area.

Hi,
could you provide a link to the BCS.pdf. I really need to look at it and I don't know where to get it. Thanks in advance

Try downloading the service manual, over in the sub-forum about service manuals :)

What's the word on tapping a switch into the BCS guys? That would be a lot sexier than all this crap involving wire runs with custom harnesses.

Well i tried ordering the fog light yesterday and they said there out of stock and dont have any idea when they will and if they will ever have anymore. (the z-store)
