For those of you who like lighting

I am still working on my lights installing switchback leds in the front turn signals(which take a 7444na bulb which is dual element)but for some reason our cars only use 1 side of the bulb(for turn signal) the other side is not used meaning you only have a turn signal at the top of your headlights.

But by looking at the back of the socket you will see 3 wires 1 + for turn signal 1 - for the turn signal and 1 black wire running thru the protected sheath but at the other end of it you only see 2 wires coming out,if you pull the black wire out of the sheath you see that it is not hooked up if you connect this wire to the yellow parking lamp wire you now have a parking light/turn signal with the stock bulb or any other 7444/7443 bulb you desire.

My switchback are white parking light then change to amber when the turn signal is activated, here are some pics to show you what I mean.

here you see the white led bulb on top w/parking lights on only

here is a pic both headlights only parking lights on

here is a pic of the headlights on low beam

another pic showing headlights on both sides low beam

and last a still pic of what the turn signal looks when blinking

Very interested to see the final result. If it looks good, you should consider posting a DIY.

Very nice! I've seen this done with the side markers before but never the turn signal. Cool idea!

Ron 01-22-2011 06:52 PM

Is it the black w/yellow wire or the solid yellow one? I trying it now :)

The solid yellow, sorry about that just connect to black wire from the back of the turn signal to the yellow parking lamp, then you will have a turn signal and parking lamp in the same bulb.

Ron 01-22-2011 07:23 PM

Yes, the black w/ yellow is the same that goes to the turn signal so I figured it had to be the solid one. I had thought about doing this before, but I was thinking i was gonna need to get different socket, bulb and extra wire. I was assuming and never checked the harness lol. +rep for figuring this out and sharing. Thanks!!

Where did u get the switchback leds? Do they blink faster than the regular bulbs?

I got them from autolumination, all led replacement of turn signals require resistor or special flashers to avoid hyper flashing,I used 2 6ohm 50 watt resistors one on each side, one side of the resistor goes to the + side of the turn signal and the other side to - side of it.

RockStarKick 01-22-2011 09:45 PM

Is your main headlight bulb different ? If so what is it ?

No the head light bulb is stock, the only thing thats changed is the 194 marker lamp with a led and the turn signal/parking lamp with a 60 led switch back lamp that is white while the parking lights and or head lights are on then it instantly turns amber when the turn signal is turned on.

I've bought from them before, pricey compared to other stores but their bulbs are top notch. Thanks for the info!

Looks very nice.... wonder how it looks with my projector turn signal lens :)

Ron 01-23-2011 01:55 PM

Thanks, the reason I was asking is your main headlight bulb has a nice blue tint to it, not too much not too little.

I also have the ordered the 194 parking light led's and am awaiting their arrival.

Not trying to thread jack, but I ordered some 6000K HID bulbs and tried to replace my headlamps the other night. When I installed one of the bulbs, I tested before I reinstalled the fender liner and the bulb flickered and just turned off. I then tried the other bulb with the same result.

Any ideas ?

Here are the bulbs I ordered in 6000K

Morimoto 3Five D2S (35w) - HID Bulbs from The Retrofit Source Inc.

By any chance did you touch the glass part of the bulb with your fingers?

No, I made sure that I didn't touch them. I have done headlight bulb swaps before. The bulbs also came with some alcohol wipes to wipe bulb before installation... I have no idea what happened. I replaced the stock one and it worked perfectly ??

I was wondering if I was sent the wrong wattage bulbs, would that make a difference ? The packaging didn't say what wattage they were.

Their web site says it is compatible with OEM DS2 if the stock bulbs work then it must be something with there bulbs.

RockStarKick 01-23-2011 03:21 PM

Yeah, I am 100% sure it was not installation error. I have already contacted the company and am awaiting a reply. It just sucks, cause it's a real pain to get in there to change the bulb without removing the wheel.

I think I'm just going to wait until I receive all my bulbs so I can do it all at once.

Headlights are looking great on your car !!!

I don't know where to get the projector lens (CinCity worked on my headlights). The lens cuts down the depth for the bulbs. I made some triple Luxeon Rebel bulbs, but the bulb was too tall with the heatsink and resistors. Plus, it sat too close to the lens which ruined the diffused look.

Next time, I will ditch the resistors and opt for a BuckToot driver externally wired inline with the turn signal wires. The bulb will end up shorter, so it'll fit nicely.

However, the next time I do any of this stuff I may end up getting another set of headlights and start all over.

Baer383 01-23-2011 03:57 PM

Pretty cool,if I would have known about them I may have bought a set.

DIGItonium 01-23-2011 04:02 PM

^ Did you work on your existing set and endured some down time? Also, did you use the heat gun method to separate the housing? I wonder if it's safer than the oven method. My current headlights started to develop some stress cracks, and the paint cracked and is spewing some caramel-like substance near the turn signal.

I put them in the oven on a cookie sheet and wet towel heated them up to 250-260 deg for 10 minutes and it came apart,as far as down time I don't drive my car in the winter I work on it so it doesn't really matter how long it takes. One thing that I'm not sure if guys are doing it is to use easy-off oven cleaner(yellow top)to remove the chrome then you have clear plastic to prep and the paint will adhere,my painters at work(I work in a body shop)also used adhesion promoter to make sure the paint has something to stick to.The caramel-like substance is more than likely melted paint.

That sucks, heat could have "toasted" the plastic and its showing now. Next time, what about wrapping the whole thing with a wet towel instead of just putting it on the bottom. That should avoid the plastic from receiving direct heat. Just an idea, I haven't tried it. ..Those projectors look very nice!

I don’t know how to do that, but the parking lamp lights up white and when the turn signal blinks and it is amber,on mine the white parking lamp is on all the time.

Same thing happened to me today with some 6000k bulbs I ordered. They light up and immediatly shut off. If I turn them off then on 3 times they work. Once they are warm they light up at the first try.... Did u fix urs?

This happened to me as well just today when I changed bulb. Called the seller, waiting for replacement bulb. Assumed is a defected bulb or something. Has not yet tried back the old 1, but will try once received replacement bulb.

Ron 01-26-2011 11:50 PM

Its just funny that both bulbs for the three of us have the same issue. You would expect at least one to be good..maybe the Z doesn't like aftermarket bulbs?
