after you wash, you need to use the clay bar to get all the hard dirt or other contamination off the car before you wax. you don't have do the whole car with clay bar unless it's extremely dirty. you need a good eye though.

Nooo , you don't need to clay bar after every wash. Clay bar is only once or twice a year.
It's an abrasive, if you do it after every wash, it will dull your paint.
Every 6 months or once a year!

wow really? my co-worker was telling me that i should just look for spots that the wash didn't exactly clean completely. and just use the clay bar on those spots and not on the whole car.

No, you'll ruin your paint. Like I said, claybar the whole car, once or twice a year, no more than that.
