Trick with Key Fob - You won't believe it! (Well I didn't)

My wife's parents were telling me how someone told them that you can unlock and lock your 370Z doors by using your cell phone. I didn't buy it at all. I figured it was one of those jokes where I would go home try it out and then get made fun of for believing the story. Well...it worked and it completely baffled me! Sorry if this trick has already been posted in another post.

I called my wife at work on my cell phone and told her to put the key fob up to her phone and hit the unlock button. At the same time I was holding my cell phone next to the door and all be damned it unlocked!!!

Try it out!

nogoodname 09-05-2010 10:27 PM

I've heard if this but I don't believe it....lol

cab83_750 09-05-2010 10:58 PM

Hmmm! I'll lurk for further outcome.

370Z JT 09-05-2010 11:12 PM

so let me get this straight. Your wife had the spare key fob at home, and while talking from her cell to your cell, she hit the unlock button, while you had your cell next to the door handle?

Chriz 09-06-2010 03:27 AM

Tried it on my friends CTS today, worked perfectly. Both shocked

TongMan 09-06-2010 04:40 AM

I heard about this myth but never tried it myself.

kenchan 09-06-2010 07:13 AM

Correct! And she wasn't even close to the car, she was probably 35 miles away.

I always thought the key fobs sent some sort of signal to the car but maybe its based on sound since it works through a cell phone.

The weird thing is that cell phones transmit a rather narrow audible frequency range, 200-3500 Hz. That means that it should only be passing signals that you can hear. How can this work with a transmitter that uses a radio frequency?

TreeSemdyZee 09-06-2010 08:05 AM

I put my cell phone up to my ear and I heard people's voices.

I don't know if you guys know this too but your own body can be used as a extension booster.

I know it worked for my RSX and it also works for the S2K.

All you had to do is stick the key fob on your body somewhere or just under your chin or something and hit the open door button.

It allowed me to open my car an extra 100-200 feet.

buddahson 09-06-2010 09:20 AM

So any chance this can work to fool intelligent key? Lets say I lost my keys. Could the car be started this way?

That's a good question... IDK??

budz 09-06-2010 10:56 AM

this is true. done it before.

Red__Zed 09-06-2010 11:27 AM

I'd be curious as To how this worked, if It did, since your cell runs a low pass filter that only goes to around 3.3 kHz. Pretty sure it doesn't work...

Try it out on your car and see if it works. Honest to god it worked for me.

nixxer 09-06-2010 12:45 PM

I have done this too, about 4 years ago. I was about 100 yards away from my car (a mazda 3 at the time). I had heard about it before and decided to see if it was real. Told my GF to walk to my car and call me, then asked her to check me doors and they were locked. So I tried to unlock them from where I was, and nothing happened. I held the fob close to the phone and tried again. To my amazement I saw my lights blink and heard the horn, then over the phone she yells 'Your car unlocked! Howed that happen!?' I later banked on the fact that I was now a magician. ;)

Solus 09-06-2010 12:45 PM

You guys.. this can't work...aren't like half of you on here doctors and well educated men and women? There is nothing that would even make someone rational think that this would work.

Not educated....rather, old people who can't hear the high freq sound transmitted by the FOB!! :)

I am still open-minded about this. Still waiting test results.

shabarivas 09-06-2010 12:59 PM

It depends on the carrier and their phone transmitting frequencies (if they happened to be 300mhz w/ an RF :p)... it works on some cars - usually when the remote is within range :)

ProfessorDave 09-06-2010 01:30 PM

Will this work, too?

Well this is embarrassing. So after all of non-believers about the fob I tried it a second time. I sent my wife down the street a couple hundred feet from our house (with both fobs) and had her try it again making sure she wasn’t in range of the fob working on its own. Turns out the key fob works from pretty far away but we couldn’t get it to work again. The only thing I can think of is that when she was at work I had the fob too close to the car when I hit the button on the door. I was fooled. Sorry if I took some of you with me.

Have you tried the 2-tone horn option?

fullmonty 09-06-2010 06:49 PM

This used to work for my old F250, never tried it with the Z yet though

Mw65 09-06-2010 07:19 PM

Holy crap just tried this and it works, unbeliveable...

jpit 09-06-2010 09:47 PM

According to Snopes it cannot possibly work.

RCZ 09-06-2010 10:15 PM

this is hilarious. Can someone actually do this?

I heard that if you honk 4 times, put the hazards on and then say 3 Our Fathers, your odometer resets to 0.

According to common sense and a 10th grade education, this cannot work :rofl2:

If your cell phone could possibly pick up your remote opener's signal, then you'd be able to hear it as well unless you're 85.
