Gauging interest in a harness bar

I have been approached by a few guys about building a quality bolt-in hoop style harness bar for the 370Z.

We have done many, many custom fabricated roll cages. We have done everything from full chromolly 4, 6, 8, 10-12 point cages, to just a simple harness bars on several types of cars. We only have the highest quality equipment and certified master fabricators and welders, using the best of material.

This is a thread to gauge the interest in producing a quality, purpose built, bolt-in (removable) hoop and harness bar for the 370Z.

We plan on using 1.75" 90 wall chromolly and the bar will be available in any powdercoated color imaginable (and even chrome plated).

Not sure on the price point yet, but I am sure it will be fair and comparably priced for the market.

Here is a example of what the bar will resemble. Although this is a picture of our 350Z four point cage/ harness bar, it gives an idea of what this bar might look like.

Interested.

Would there be the option for just a single bar replacement of the stock one with harness mounts on it? If so, I'd be down for that.

As for a full up cage, would prolly be above the level of track usage my Z will see.

Oh man, in for a price when that gets sorted out.

Scott, since we are so close you can use my 370z for r&d. i hardly drive it anyways and im looking for this kind of a setup and new seats. let me know if you want to use my car to get the ball rolling. as long as you powdercoat it gold for me

All about $$$$$

ilive2win 06-26-2010 12:45 AM

Shouldn't be BUT remember he has to make a profit. Im more than willing to pay a little more for a custom item like this especially since its basically this, or the Amuse bar which is $1k alone and only has mount points on 1 side.

Plus, Scott is upfront about things and seems to be eager to get the ball, i mean bar...rolling along!

Jamaica 06-26-2010 11:29 AM

The amuse has mounting points on both sides.

What class of PCA are you wanting to run? or tell me the requirements of what you are needing to meet as far as the harness bar/ hoop bar is concerned.
Our cages, bars, etc always meet NASA, SCCA, RLTA, rules and regulations for the perspective class we design them for. PM or e-mail me your specific class requirements and we will have NO problem meeting them. ;)

I just want to do HPDEs, and I know they have gotten picky lately. I'm sure SCCA is good enough. Looking at their site, there are no specifics I guess, just specifics for the seat belts and seats.

All amuse bars ive seen installed only have 1 set of mounting points. I even asked the owners about it. They may have a new bar out with both points but even then, im thinking the angle down to the bar from the seat will be 2 low safely attach the harnesses. From what i understand the amuse bar is more for looks....BUT im getting off topic sorry Scott!

Bottom line is i want something a little more race inspired and custom yet still easy to remove if i want to...Scott can provide me both

I'd love to look into this down the line if it didn't require mangling my plastics. (Removing them is okay)

To meet these guidelines can the bar be removable or does it have to be welded?

Scott is looking into creating a removable hoop/harness bar. Not sure if it will be a replacement of the interior brace bar or a separate setup similar to the autopower bolt on/ U-Weld setup. I need to call him >_< ive just been busy at work and my shift + time zone make it hard to call when anyone is awake.

I would like to see a concept drawing of the design. I am interested though in a harness bar/roll cage combo.

After talking to Scott on the phone i was going to work up a couple photoshopped pics but im trying to attain another copy of photoshop from my commo guys lol. Ill get on it. Anything i work up is just a sketch tho since its going to come down to what angles Scott and the guys decide they can do once they have the car in their hands.

-UPDATE-

We are now just getting busy with the early stages of prototyping and building (plastic removal, measuring, etc.) on our four-point bolt-in cage/ harness bar.
If there is enough interest, I am contemplating also just making a harness bar that will not be a four point design, something that will just work for mounting the five and six point harness belts (without the over head rollover halo bar and rear kicker bars).

Stay tuned for more updates...... (maybe I will make another thread when I have more to share)

Just wanted to keep everyone posted

Scott - I am defintiely interested in just a harness bar ... only issue is for you to determine if it can mount high enough for the angle for belts to pass over top of seat back at 15degrees or less from horizontal so I can use my HANS device - not a critical issue, but an added benefit if possible.

Yes, ^^ you are absolutely correct. That is what we are in the process of determining.
If we can get just a harness bar to meet our standards and be proper fitting, properly braced, work with the correct angles, etc than we will make just the harness bar as well for those of you that do not want or feel they need the full 4 or 6 point cage.

JB-370z 09-06-2010 11:26 PM

I would want a 5-6 point setup. I would love to see how this would turn out.

Marco_xyz 09-06-2010 11:37 PM

Scott was working on my 370z initially. However, after butting heads in many issues and with a pre given deadline of 2 weeks which actually went longer then a month uncompleted, i decided that pulling my car out of this project was the best decision.

Well, I apologize for the delay in updates, guys. Just bad timing on our part....
Having a customers built motor, twin turbo project going on right now, SEMA show project cars, along with a couple other more pressing projects, all combined with the travels of my personal racing/ testing job, and also being a little short handed at the shop lately.... We just haven't had any time to finish or even get back on this cage and harness bar project.

Honestly, the 370Z is one of the hardest cars we have ever had to make a harness bar/4 point cage for (especially a removable one)! The lack of room and complicated angles make it a little more difficult than most any other car. Just bad timing for us, the seeming lack of enough real interest has had this project on a back burner.

Its good to see more interest in this project as of late, thanks for that, guys......
Looking forward to things slowing down here in the next few weeks and then being able to finish up this harness bar project for the 370Z.

Equinox 09-09-2010 04:29 AM

why not just replace the existing brace bar in the rear with a just as thick but stronger, gusseted square bar with slots for racing harnesses that fit the stock interior parts.

spearfish25 09-12-2010 06:24 PM

I'm definitely interested in a replacement cross-bar that will have harness mounts.
