Stillen Roof Wing

i received my Stillen roof wing in the mail yesterday after missing the Fedex guy the first time lol. It just needs to be painted and its good to go!
The fitment seems pretty good its a little hard to tell by the pictures but it seems pretty straight on.
It came with the double side tape already applied and i was ensured that this will keep it on the car even at excessive speeds.
And here are the pics, i took just placed the wing on the window and held it with two little peices of tape.

and the money shot

i used my cell phone to snap the quick pix but you get the idea.

Looks awesome, I'll be ordering one too.

Looks good fairladyZ34..

fullmonty 05-07-2010 01:41 PM

For a second I thought it was going to be wild and ricey but its very tastefull

Marco_xyz 05-07-2010 02:06 PM

how much are these approximately?

Trips 05-07-2010 02:08 PM

$179

It's position looks like it relocates the air flow deflection force more toward the CG point of the car which in essence would decrease any downward force on the wheels.

One could argue that the downward force would now be to the immediate front of the rear wheels instead of behind the rear wheels at the rear deck lid wing. But because any deflaction force with this wing is now moved more than half the distance toward the CG point of the car it would lessen the amount of downward force being generated over the wheels.

So someone please explain what is it's advantage as the physics resulting from its location seems to suggest a possible disadvantage.

thanks man, the stillen rear wing is big and a lil wild but the roof spoiler goes well with the sport spoiler

kenchan 05-07-2010 04:25 PM

wat do these do?

Jeffblue 05-07-2010 04:29 PM

it keeps your roof from flying off

kenchan 05-07-2010 04:31 PM

oh... dang, how fast is excessive speeds, op??!!

Marco_xyz 05-07-2010 04:55 PM

Duh! It creates a air tunnel vortex to keep your car stuck to the ground at any speeds in between 100-200mph

simota1 05-07-2010 05:08 PM

NICE BRO.... how is it when you open the hatch? i actually made one similar looking to this.. looked sweet... but when i opened the hatch it uninstalled it self :shakes head:

Marco_xyz 05-07-2010 05:43 PM

Yes please let us know how the fitment is when opening the hatch, that tends to be the major issue with roof spoilers!

RCZ 05-07-2010 05:46 PM

I doubt it gives much downforce... its more than likely a spoiler rather than a wing. In which case, it is breaking up the airflow so air doesnt stick to your rear window and cause drag.

Would work even better if it were a vortex generator ala the WRC ones that made their way into the aftermarket scene.

Not to nit pick but the vortex generator on the EVO MR was not aftermarket. It came on MR models factory. Black on the 8 and painted on the 9. I had a 9 MR. I get what you are saying though, I've seen some unfortunate examples on random cars that don't look good or functional. On the EVO they were to ensure air hit the rear wing.

OP, I like it. It's subtle.

fairladyZ34 05-07-2010 10:25 PM

its more aesthetics id believe than anything else, but ill let everyone know how the butt dyno responds:tup:

The aerodynamics just went out the window!

one could also argue that the downforce generated is now more evenly distributetd at the 4 corners.

What down force??? The closer the down-force is occuring to the C.G. point the force becomes less effective since the force is being exerted near the fulcrum point of the car (C.G.).

At the position the little wing is located at the top of the window that is so near the C.G. point of the 370Z that the force is reduced to practically zero at that wing.

So what force????

kenchan 05-08-2010 05:08 PM

They should make one that goes on the hood. Will keep the bugs off the glass at excessive speeds.

lol dont get too worked up buddy. the wing is mostly for looks im sure thats what you wanted to hear anyway.

Joka4411 05-08-2010 11:36 PM

Haww dont really know about this wing thing looks kind of overkill

Yep. Actually it looks like it will reduce the down force.

I already have the stillen roof wing installed & painted, just curious was that the first one they sent you?

Interesting article on this and Vortex generators in general Here:

There's 4 parts to this series so look around.. Autospeed article

My friend's was fine but mine was alil "off" in the molding process, http://i727.photobucket.com/albums/w...4/fce4a92d.jpg http://i727.photobucket.com/albums/w...4/1c27df31.jpg I sent it back & after some e-mails & dealing with stillen, I was sent a "better" one. http://i727.photobucket.com/albums/w...4/1bf82431.jpg http://i727.photobucket.com/albums/w...4/49ddf706.jpg http://i727.photobucket.com/albums/w...4/71163cd9.jpg http://i727.photobucket.com/albums/w...4/3dca6985.jpg http://i727.photobucket.com/albums/w...4/481b30e0.jpg http://i727.photobucket.com/albums/w...4/d84cfe29.jpg

Will do, I have much to learn about Aero. Thanks Mod

EDIT: I'm assuming then that our cars are streamlined enough in the transfer from roof to rear window where the flow doesn't separate too much. Could it be better to speed up the surface layer with some vortex generators? every bit helps I guess. Like I said, much to learn.

Its funny, but I read something that completely contradicted that whole article a while back. Can't trust any sources these days I guess.

So whats your opinion on this wing? Will it do more harm because of the separation/drag that it will cause or is the downforce (if any) created by it worth the drag? Or is there no way of knowing without testing..

I have never read any article such as this one where the writers want their cake and want to eat it too by way of magically transformating the theoretical into conclusions with little to no substantive resultive test evidence...

AK370Z 05-10-2010 06:51 AM

I absolutely love it. It looks fantastic (especially in white  ). Good job STILLEN

FuszNissan 05-10-2010 08:53 AM

Is it for looks or does it have function? Sorry haven't read the whole thread.

Rhinetom 05-10-2010 09:19 AM

Other than looks, I highly doubt any measurable benefits.

You know, at high speeds, a small change in the aero profile can make big differences. Look at the F430 and now the 458 Italia. No wings, yet Ferrari claims something like 370kg of df at 180mph on the 458.

That's insane!

RCZ 05-10-2010 10:37 AM

Yeah, according to Chris Harris (EVO), independent testing is yielding lower results than than those. If I remember correctly, the 997 GT3 RS, with its big wing and front splitter, only makes about 180KG at the same speed. I'm guessing Ferrari may have exaggerated a little...
