370Z gas cap door problems

I have broke off (2) gas cap doors on my Z, so far, in my opinion it is a bad design. It takes little effort to open the door. Has any one else had any problems?

simota1 04-29-2010 05:15 AM

just get a stant dood :D no need to take out the gas cap no more

Broke the locking mechanism once bc dealer didn't tell me it locked with the car. If the car is unlocked, not sure what part would fail?

Vegitto-kun 04-29-2010 06:51 AM

Honestly people, how the hell do you guys break stuff like this?

All they have to do is push-in the gas door when the car is unlock. But if they pry it then is different.

Vegitto-kun 04-29-2010 07:45 AM

Oh no

I have to push and it wont open I SHALL PULL ON IT USING A CROWBAR.

Oh no it broke

kannibul 04-29-2010 08:01 AM

I agree that the car must be unlocked for the gas cover to be, I mean, how hard would it be for them to put another proximity detector there, with like a 30" range?

CBRich 04-29-2010 08:03 AM

I just went and looked at my gas cap. You would really have to screw up to break this thing.

MblueZ34 04-29-2010 08:16 AM

:roflpuke2::inoutroflpuke: how the hell do u break this HAHAHAHAHHAHHA

+1000000

I don't really understand how some of the things that happen to people on the forums can even happen in the first place. I mean, some things are physically and/or logically impossible and yet people find ways to do it.

One dude dropped his key down a random hole in the dash then went MIA when he tried to go in after it and detonate a tactical nuke to get the key out... I mean... how the hell does this stuff happen? :icon18:

antman22 04-29-2010 08:41 AM

i think some ppl have no patience and when something doesnt work perfectly everytime, panic sets in and nukes go off.

"the gas door doesn't open...do i...try it again or maybe unlock the doors then try...orrr try to rip the crap out of it? lets go with the last option."

Hmm.... strange. I've never had any issues with the gas door. Mine works flawlessly. Good design, works everytime.:icon14:

Vegitto-kun 04-29-2010 09:41 AM

I love these types of threads!

kenchan 04-29-2010 10:44 AM

next week his door handles are going to break off and it's due to bad design as well.

I feel a thread lock coming soon......

freddiebear 04-29-2010 11:09 AM

My doors broke off in the car wash, they popped open when it was rinsing and the arm on the sprayer snapped it off at the hinge. The door should not open by just the pressure of water hitting it.

kenchan 04-29-2010 11:10 AM

ahh, so there is a reason why it broke... you didn't lock you doors when entering the autowash. :D

Now this makes a little more sense. I would never put my baby thru a carwash, so Imma safe

kenchan 04-29-2010 11:32 AM

ahh, so now im thinking it's those autowash places that you hand off your keys and the guys there vac the car and put it into the wash for you unmanned... ok, makes sense why the car is unlocked when entering.

there are other nissans including my G that have the same setup and it hasn't broken after 6yrs... so might be time to look for another car wash or just wash your car youself.

fullmonty 04-29-2010 11:46 AM

I've had no issues with it

the_student 04-29-2010 12:50 PM

Cmon guys, things happen. For me it was something different like what Room42 stated.

In the beginning I didn't know it locked with the car either. Usually these doors just push to open on other cars. And the first time I opened the lid to put in gas, I didnt have to push the unlock button. When I went home I checked to see if I locked the gas cap tight enough, but it wouldn't open. So I thought maybe something got stuck and I push a little harder than usual and the locking mechanism broke. It works just fine though and it doesnt open on its own or anything like that. I know there are other people on here who has had that happen.

Methinks it's you, NOT the door. Might want to read the manual...

Your dealer failed you if they did not point this out to you. Kinda important and a good thing to know. My dealer did not point it out either, but thankfully the Infiniti dealer did when we bought our first G35 in 2004.

I have been paranoid of people tampering with my gas tank since I brought my H2 home from the dealership and a friend walked up, opened the gas cap and said, "I bet a Twix would drop right in there." I have had locking caps/doors ever since.

Wait

What is up with people.

if it doesn't open I wouldn't be like "I shall push the damn thing DEEPER which will make it go open."

Reminds me of the topic where people were all "lol didn't know how to open the fuel cap door"

I don't know why but I knew these things without even reading the manual. Probably because I never had a car with a button to open it in the car.:roflpuke2:

I test drove my Nismo with a friend and the dealer gave us a gas voucher since the car was on E. I got to the gas station and looked around for a few seconds for the release switch in the cabin. I nearly had to call the dealer to ask how to put gas in, but then I just tried pushing on it and it popped open. All in all this took place over the period of about 45 seconds though...

All the cars I've ever driven. Non Nissan cars either had a latch in the car for the lid or either a push pull mechanism. And since I opened it earlier with no problems it brought me to believe that it was a push type or mechanism.

how do u mistreat ur Z!!!? she get 1st class treatment. im not pushing anything harder except her accelerator. u wouldnt punt a puppy off a bridge so y would n e one C4 the gas door!!!

Jesse_Hunter 04-30-2010 02:45 AM

The only problem I have with mine is that the tiny little pin falls out everytime I open the gas door. I just have to put the pin back in before closing door.

In regards to the dealer not showing certain aspects of the car to the customer. I'm no car expert, But I felt like I knew more about the Z than any dealer I spoke to. I spent 10 minutes convincing one that the 350 Didn't have a back seat, I gave up when he said "mmmmm.....I think they maaaaay have............"

370zsport09 04-30-2010 05:22 AM

OMY I can't open my gas door without breaking it LMAO

Maybe the ppl breaking their gas doors should buy a 1990's car cuz u don't have to do anything but pull it open....duh duh duh
