Then have them cut it out of 1/8" or 3/16" aluminum sheet metal. That would be strong. It wouldn't be especially lightweight, but it sounds like you're throwing a bunch of stuff back there anyway, so you might not be worried about a couple extra pounds. If you wanted to DIY, you could trace and cut your own. It might not be as clean, though, depending on the equipment you have access to.
