I've taken mine apart before and removed the needles. I marked exactly where the needles were pointing prior to removing them and then I made sure that they were reinstalled in the same position. I also found that you can push them back on too far and they'll drag.

I'm hoping that's all it is. I know I put them on in the same position as they were removed, but I'm now wondering if I did what you said and put them on too tight. Will check that this weekend.

Just try prying them up a little bit. That will keep the needle from bottoming out against the gauge face.
