370z Interior Hatch Rattle (All Plastic Trim Removed)
Whats goin on fellas,
Got the much talked about rattle/buzzing after installing the AAM Resonated Short Tails. I have searched and searched, watched videos and tried so many different things. Bottom line is, rattle occurs both when all the plastic is removed from the hatch and attached w/ weather stripping. I also have taken the plastic off exposing the trunk latch. I tried moving the latch all the way down, adding pennies to the springs, removing the weight. No solution yet. Sounds like it is definitely coming from the rear passenger side but could be resonating from elsewhere..In addition to hearing the rattle when accelerating, I hear one when going over bumps - coming from the same spot. Anyone have any ideas or want to share their own personal experiences where I should check? -Koz |
When you removed the plastic panel by the latch, did you secure that little hatch light that ends up dangling?

Man I feel your pain.
Ive been working on my hatch click/buzz for six months now. I ve done a long list of things, and have found many suspects, but its still going strong. I am very close to removing the third brake light. I may remove the entire defrost wiring harness first. At this point, I dont think its wiring (because its all taped down) I am thinking the third light gets hot when the hatch is in the sun, and gets warm. Then it creaks, pops, taps when subject to vibration. |
I have installed five AAM resonated and non resonated short tail exhausts and I have never heard about anyone complain about any buzzing, rattling, vibration etc. noises after the installation. There is definitely something loose somewhere obviously and/or rubbing against something. Trying to diagnose a noise on a forum will be hard and it is better off being diagnosed and look at in person. You should take your Z to a reputable exhaust shop and have them hear this noise in person and take the exhaust shop technician for a ride and give them a chance to hear the noise. The fix is probably an easy one you just have to take your Z to the right place to diagnose the noise the best of luck.

Mine were replaced in 2010 under warranty and I've done a bodge once since, but now is intending race-car, super-stiff springs and CBF doing it any more. Is this your problem ?? |
You may have some gravel scooped up & trappped in your fuel cell cover,,,so many different things could cause this.

heat shield above original muffler???
|
Did you try removing the short tails to see if that solves the issue?

When I was running the AAM shorties I had gawdaful buzzing in the car as well... Even the headliner would buzz.
A few things I found that lessened the buzz were removing the tin heat shield above the original muffler as it's so thin it acts like a resonator. I also glued some thin closed-cell foam to the back of the license plate and trimmed to fit. While this helped, I was never really able to kill the buzz, and after about 500 miles of dealing with it I pulled the AAMs and went with a Beluga Racing axle-back. |

My Mini Countryman would buzz and creak over bumps due to the weather seals around the doors and hatch. I used this CRC Marine Lubricant spray on the seals and all was quiet. I thought I started some creaks from my rear hatch so I used this on the weather seal back there and all gone. It's worth a try, Walmart or Home Depot should have it. You can even spray it on areas where plastic meets metal.

Check out Perfected Auto on YouTube. He has a couple of videos detailing his quest to fix his rattle--he finally found it to be the plastic gear box for the deck lid latch.
