also curious if you had used any other chemical before the dash became sticky?

Sticky dash does come back, more pronounced when humidity is high. I had not use other chemical prior to the sticky dash syndrome, maybe a little bit of Pledge on a small towel, but nothing directly sprayed onto the dash. And this syndrome happens in places I can hardly reach also, places that don't get touched or even get exposed to sunlight, so it's safe to say the little use of Pledge had nothing to do with the deterioration.

thanks for the update. I was hoping the 303 worked out.

looks like there is no solution for it....

Just put a dash mat cover on the dash and call it a day.

Good Idea:tiphat:

Fountainhead 10-08-2018 10:41 AM

Mine is only very slightly sticky, but is cracking/separating around all the edges of the dash where it radiuses into a right angle (door sides) etc.
How disappointing that such an otherwise nice car has this plague on it. I always keep a solid (not plastic) dash cover custom fitted. Daily driven with 65K.

It does suck man. Mine has done the same thing. I am seriously considering presenting this info/thread to a lawyer. My brother in law. I think we have enough evidence that clearly this is a factory defect. It overall ruins the interior and results in a lower resell value.

Good luck with that one.

nis350 10-09-2018 09:00 PM

the materials they used for the dash is deteriorating over time/heat/UV. it became dangerous due to the glare/reflection on the windshield.

I think the issues developed after 3 years or so, but probably sooner in warmer climate.

Toyota took care of it.

My dash has deteriorated like crazy over the last year. It almost looks like a suede finish now. Sticky to the touch. Car has been sitting in an insulated garage in Texas for the entire year and it's just seems to be getting worse and worse. No rhyme or reason for it. Put 100K miles on it as a DD with no issues and now it gets parked and this happens :shakes head:

Yep, dark + moisture seem to be the real culprit. I have 3 cases on my hand now, all developed under similar conditions. I also had an old Escort 8500 mounted in the Z, and the rubber cover on the coiled power cord did the same thing.

If the Z is being stored, I suggest:
  • Be sure the dash is clean,
  • Be sure the dash is protected (like the 303 spray)
  • Put one of those moisture absorbing thing in the the interior.

nis350 02-20-2019 12:14 AM

my car is always garage in socal where the temperature is quite mild.

Based on all my readings here, I have tried cleaning the dash with just water with a little soap. the dash would look quite nice and non-sticky, but after a month or so, the dash would turn a bit grayish on the surface, it almost felt like a film because it would turn a bit darker if I just wipe it with my hand.

I would clean it again with water and put a very light coat of meguiar natural vinyl protectant. The dash color would restore and looks really nice. However, after I drive the car under the sun for awhile, the surface started to turn oily and develop glare on the windshield, probably due to the heat.

I have recently repeated the process, but with the 303 vinyl protectant as you suggested. The temperature has been quite cold recently, so the dash still looks pretty good.

I am ok to repeat this process once a month as long as the dash doesn't crack.

Sadly the melting dash has no cure. Once it starts, nothing will reverse/stop the process. I had the same experience, freshly applied 303 won’t stop the dash from melting in warm and sunny days. The worst thing is the glare/reflection showing on the windshield (due to dash being shiny) actually blocking the driver’s vision.

Lol if driving in sunny+warm days, make sure the AC is on and must park in a shade.

It hurts my brain everytime I think about it.

These sticky dashes... are they random across model years, or seen more with earlier 370zs?

No idea, but my personal experience is with one a 09, and 2 x 2010 dashes. My research on this topic on other platforms seem to also point to the earlier 2000 periods also. But I can’t make any guarantee. Whatever the year, take extra caution if your car is a garage queen.

I must stress again, UV and heat aren’t the only thing that cause this. The extreme opposite can also lead to melting dash. Melting buttons happen on garage queen Ferrari’s and Porsche’s as well.

I currently have an 09 Z, 10 G, 11 FX (all the same platform). FX gets parked outside, takes a beating everyday, and no issue. Z becomes a garage queen 3 years ago, G gets driven a whole lot less in this same period (semi garage queen), both dashes started melting during their hibernations. All 3 cars have Covercraft screens, and parked in shades whenever possible.

nis350 02-20-2019 11:10 PM

I am also curious if this sticky dash issues impact all Z's.....

I imagine the materials and processes are the same for all dash regardless of where they were produced. Unless some factories screwed up.

Again, I don't mind cleaning and applying the protectant as long as the dash doesn't crack....

Looks like my Z has this issue as well. I stumbled on https://stickydashfix.com while researching the issue, seems to affect Japanese cars from various brands.

They seem to explain the problem well. Has anyone tried the product?

tonythetiger 01-11-2020 10:16 PM

lately the z has been sitting in the garage more often and noticed interior dash is starting to have cracks, white haze in certain areas, i thought i took good care of it over the years but seems the humidity is taking a toll on the z...

I just ordered it, these guys look legit. Shipping was $10, but let's see how it works out....

During fall and winter, I have a little utility heater blowing 24/7, keeping the 2 car garage relatively warm and humidity in check. It slowed down the deterioration in between coats of 303. Worth a try.

I thought about this, but I was concerned with the safety aspect of leaving an electric heater running for long periods of time unattended.

Are you using just a basic electric heater?

Ya just a basic little plugged in one

JARblue 01-16-2020 10:05 AM

I'm active in NFPA and definitely not comfortable leaving something like that plugged in unattended.

My garage is insulated and stays pretty reasonable with temp extremes around 55F and 85F. Austin humidity is pretty consistent middle of the road except when it rains. No excuse for this crap.

cv129 01-16-2020 10:07 AM

Huh, perhaps I need to rethink my approach

Edit: when I said 24/7, I didn’t mean put it on constant on, my temp dial is at half way point and it runs intermittently. But, I think I still should rethink my approach.

Believe it or not I received it yesterday. It took a whole month to find its way from Australia. I emailed the company a few weeks ago and they said it takes a long time to clear US customs, 30 days for shipping is typical.

I'm going to takes some before/after pics and keep everyone updated. I hope this works out.

KaienZ34 02-16-2020 07:51 PM

I've got all my fingers crossed, thanks for being the test mule. I just want to be able to drive during the day and not have the dash look like a damn mirror.

Spartan 1771 02-17-2020 11:21 AM

I ordered a similar dash cover from dashcare.com, ( https://dashcare.com/i-2761778-nissa...ash-cover.html)
The one I ordered is Black DashSuede with holes for both sensors on the dash. It fits great and looks excellent. The price was $56.38, that included shipping to Florida. The dash cover actually adds a nice look to the inside of the Z.

old guy 02-17-2020 09:40 PM

So has anyone definitively figured out if it was a uv problem or an age problem? I ask only because my car sees very little uv light basically only while I’m on the road. Otherwise it’s parked in the garage or in the shade.

Spartan 1771 02-18-2020 06:43 AM

My car has spent the majority of its life in the garage under a cover and I just noticed that my dash is starting to look a little funky. I'm going to venture to say this is an age issue.

JARblue 02-18-2020 06:56 AM

There's no way it's a UV issue.

old guy 02-18-2020 08:03 AM

Thanks Guys,
Something to look forward to...... NOT

nis350 02-19-2020 01:11 AM

same here... car is always in the garage under a cover in SOCAL weather.

Thankful I ran across this thread - I thought I was the only one with this issue! My ‘10 Z has always been garage kept and I started noticing this issue about 6 months ago. It looks slightly better after I clean it, but you can tell something is still wrong as it’s still tacky and doesn’t clean as easy as it used to. I ordered some of the stickydashfix myself too. I’ll let you guys know how it turns out!

Any PICTURES Yet? - :hello:

nis350 02-23-2020 10:35 AM

i think mine became sticky after about 5 years. it gets kinda grayish during the cool/dry in the garage during the socal Winter. I used the 303 Areospace protectant and it would look nice again. my guess is that it would get shiny under the sun/heat, but I am hoping at least it would avoid cracks down the road.

our g37s has a similar dash materials and has zero sticky issues.

I am curious if the stickydashfix would keep the dash dry and in matte color under the hot sun.

please keep us posted. thanks.

.

Yes it’ll get shiny, or “melts” under the sun, worse if clear sky and without AC. Be careful when it gets so shiny that the the reflection (the image of the dash start to show on the windshield) starts to distort you driving vision a bit.
