Default Weak Trunk Pop... Solutions?

When I press the button to release the trunk, it pops open the lock, but not enough to fully disengage the lid. It takes two hands (one on the button, and one pulling up on the lid) to actually get it clear of the locking mechanism. Can this be fixed by some stronger trunk struts, or is there some other solution?

I've got the cargo cover attached, and I know that adds a little weight, (also have the standard OEM Touring spoiler), but it's pretty cumbersome to open this thing, especially when carrying groceries, etc.

Anyone got a solution to this to make it a single handed open? It doesn't have to go all the way up (though that would be nice) but for it to at least clear the lock so that I could hit the button and then simply lift the lid all with one hand.

Not this issue? TSB: 2009 nissan 370z coupe; rear hatch will not open on first push of release button

Try removing the weight in the hatch per this DIY DIY: Weight reduction/Fix hatch not opening issue

Yep... that's the issue. Is the TSB something that Nissan will switch out like a factory recall, or is this something that I'll be paying for out of pocket?

I thought it was a recall. But I'm not 100% positive. Maybe call up a local dealer and find out? They'll probably want to run your VIN to see if you're eligible.

If the dealer won't do it for free, I'd just buy the upgraded hatch struts from Z1 and DIY. The hood was easy enough. I can't imagine the hatch is any more difficult.

Thanks JARblue, I've got a call out to the local Nissan Dealership... left a message, so we'll see how long this takes.

That was so annoying in the beginning. Stealership replaced under warranty.

I pulled hatch weight and tried putting a few coins ...dimes was it? under the spring (inside the little spring bootie. It was a tiny bit goofy but it worked. Finally I just got a new spring from the dealership (they didn't charge me). Now it works fine. If the dealer gives you grief, it's kinda fun pulling the hatch weight anyhow and makes you feel like a racer loosing the dead weight. (Plus a little spare change in the boot can always come in handy)

I've noticed the same thing on my '12 NISMO. Is that TSB only for 2009 models, then?

Hmm I have a 2012 and seem to have the same issue. If it's that easy and quick I may have to try it this weekend.

Wow. Nissan just told me that:
1. They don't have any of the new spring lifts in stock, so they would have to be ordered.
2. They're $58 a piece.

Looks like we'll be trying ebay, or more likely, just doing the DIY.

Z1 upgraded hatch struts cost $68 for the pair

Z1 Upgraded 370Z Hatch Struts

I find it humorous they list the OEM struts as well. For $300+ But the product page specifically notes they are prone to failure and links to the upgraded hatch struts lol

Nice. I may do the struts at some point, but just completed the spring DIY with some loose change. So, instead of $116 for the new spring lifts, I spent a total of $0.12 (a nickel a penny in each).

So far, so good. She's clearing the lock with a single button push. We'll see how reliable it is over time.
