HP/Torque NISMO vs. other Z's

I have been doing searches on the web, etc. trying to better understand how Nissan is producing the extra power of the NISMO model. So far I seem to only find statements like this:

"The 370Z NISMO's enhanced engine power and acceleration (versus non-NISMO 370Zs) is provided through use of an exclusive H-configured exhaust system design and muffler tuning, along with optimized ECM (Engine Control Module) calibration."

Is the power difference really just the NISMO exhaust and tune? That seems like some very large gains for one bolt-on mod? If a non-Nismo Z added the NISMO exhaust would the ECM relearn to a NISMO like stetting or would the car need to be tuned? Could a dealer do this based on NISMO factory settings without a independent tuner with the same results?

Thoughts? I looked forward to learning from all of you on this.

Cordially,

SterlingDriver

You should try searching, or just looking through stuff more...

It's exhaust and tune. The exhaust is only worth maybe 7BHP. The rest is the tune.
The car will not get you to a Nismo-like tune. The dealer will not apply a Nismo tune.
You need an aftermarket tune, which can be fine tuned and you can adjust many more features.

SterlingDrive 02-09-2014 08:27 AM

This thread seems to support there is not a lot of difference in the ECM settings with the NISMO, just a little leaner on the top end.

Thank you DEpointfive0 that is very helpful especially about the ECM not relearning to a NISMO tune.

And there's not a whole lot of difference in the exhaust either. You're talking about 18 hp at the crank, so maybe 12-15 at the wheels. A good aftermarket exhaust and tune and you've picked up far more than 12-15, especially if you do intakes and tps/hfcs at the same time. A stock Nismo dynos at around 290whp or so and bolt ons and a tune will put you around 325whp or so.

Hell, just an exhaust without a tune on a non Nismo will put you above the power levels of a Nismo

Do what some of us did, and you'll end up with WAYYYY more power than a [stock] NISMO.

And for far less money.

1slow370 02-11-2014 02:45 AM

lol no joke who pays $10k more for the same car with 12 more whp?

Edit: my bad it's 13k more now

DIGItonium 02-11-2014 07:18 AM

Hrm, my joke kinda backfired and became truth lol. Not just a NISMO. A few months ago I saw a touring that stickered for over $43k. Granted, mine is only base, and it was just $32k. How about an IPL G for close to $50k? SMH.

Some of us got it. :rofl2:

Where's Chii370 to come rushing in to defend how the Nismo is just altogether better in every way than the lowly regular Z? I'm pretty sure he's got a google alert set up when someone disparages God's own chariot. :rofl2:

fuct 02-11-2014 09:46 AM

^^haha

we get a text when someone bad mouths a nismo!

(and i got mine for $37k)

Chuck33079 02-11-2014 09:48 AM

I thought it was more like the bat-signal. Someone shines it up in the sky, and Nismo owners rush in prepared to do battle. :rofl2:

wstar 02-11-2014 09:49 AM

Yeah most of the parts/power upgrades on the Nismo version aren't worth it compared to aftermarket stuff, but the one thing that might be woth it is the Nismo-style bumper+undertray setup up front. I guess you could retrofit that onto a Sport model, but still.

People that don't want the ugly arse base models, and appreciate the extra Nismo goodies?

Agreed. That's why I've got a set.

JWillis72 02-11-2014 12:59 PM

I like the Nismo bumper and wheels but don't understand why they didn't add more power to it or why you can't get leather or the 7AT in it.

US market always gets a "standard" version, really no options (Japan you can get leather).
The power figure probably has to do with cost, emissions, accountants, etc. I think he goal with the Nismo is usually to be a more 'track' focused car through other upgrades than HP.

Chuck33079 02-11-2014 01:04 PM

If there was a Nismo with the touring pack, I would have strongly considered it. The wing would have to go, but someone would have happily paid to swap hatches.

Minus the power, the ipl g37 will fit that need.

True but I wanted a Z again, so I bought a touring with the 7AT, supercharged it, changed the exhaust and upgraded the breaks. All of that was about the same price as the Nismo add on but with a bunch more power and a better sound.

2011 Nismo#91 02-12-2014 01:08 PM

Yeah you certainly don't buy the Nismo for the 13HP, hell if you want to faster out the door 370Z you don't even buy the 6MT.

Oh and by the way there is a Nismo Bat Signal, looks kinda like this.

Did you do anything to the tranny after the supercharger addition?

really? you paid less than $37k for ALL that? in 2009 invoice on a nismo was even less than that...

1slow370 02-12-2014 03:14 PM

yeah but he has leather, better sound system, and 130 more hp not 13 more theres an extra zero there

The car sat in a Naples garage in a winter home and I bought it this summer for 26,500 with 6,000 miles in it. I was looking at new ones at the time it came up for sale and I loved the yellow. I was working on a deal for a 2013 sport touring at the time but the dealer was working with me much. It didn't have the sport breaks but it will next week. Im around 40K now but that includes the supercharger, Aquamist meth injection, Stillen exhaust, adding sport breaks and having them powder coated black with yellow logos, carbon fiber vented hood and boost /AFR gauge installed where the clock was. It's 406 WHP/302 TQ. Don't take me wrong, I like the nismo body kit and wheels but I think it's over priced since they didn't add more power.

If you bought your car for a warranty buying a used car might not make since but since I intended to make it fast it really didn't make a difference to me.

Nothing but adding a trans cooler. The trans is rated at 300 ft lbs and I'm just over that so time will tell. The 7AT has really impressed me so far, I live in south Florida and this time of year the traffic here is crazy so I just cant deal with a stick.

Oh and we upped the line pressure with uprev.

no i completely understand about saving some cash and fixing up a non nismo version. if i liked the look of the car non-nismo i would have done that. but honestly i love the look and right now im not looking to boost it.

but as you said you are at $40k right now. i paid well under that for a NEW nismo. (granted im not supercharged)

The first thing I did was the exhaust and that passed the Nismo HP and I was well under 30K!

Because I like to track the car the wing would have came off a Nismo for a working wing (not on mine yet but it will be) so thats not worth anything to me personally. I would have left the body kit but My car will get one in carbon to match the hood and wing so its better for me personally. The Nismo coil overs are non adjustable so they would have gotten changes so when you add all of that plus not being able to get the options I wanted it turned me off. I love the looks but there was a lot better bang for the buck to me. Nismos still look sexy in my rear view mirror:tup:!

fuct 02-12-2014 03:55 PM

I wonder if Porsche and BMW owners have the same conversations...Boxer vs Cayman, Cayman vs 911 and on and on. I drove a base and didn't like it drove the Nismo and it was all over. I didn't buy it for horsepower over the other Zees, cause you can get hp if you want it bad enough. Went with Z because of it uniqueness and of the Zees the Nismo is the most unique. And as for mods...did them all and yes mine is faster than most...you got to pay if you want to play!!! I paid $34k and it only had 11K miles on it. There are deals to be had on all models.

Yes Porsche owners have the same conversation. At Sebring the mid-engine Caymen seem to get around the track faster than the rear engine big money 911s. Cayman owners love it and 911 owners hate it!

Your Nismo is what a Nismo should be, fast and sexy! I still would want the 7AT and leather but I love your car!

fuct 02-13-2014 08:18 AM

i think this would be more an argument for the SRT and SVT and M3 vs regular 3 series and other regular versions would bicker about.

cayman vs 911.....? that is more like us upset an altima went around a track faster than us. kinda

Hotrodz 02-13-2014 08:20 AM

Thanks man...that was my goal. I wanted my car to be as fast as it looks!!!
