Sad update on my part...
Initially, I was enjoying the changes from adding the UD pulley. I had put on about 500 miles or so and started noticing a couple of drops of oil under the car when I moved it. Also started noticing a slight vibration so I called the mechanic that installed it and he came over to check it out. Turns out it wasn't seated properly and was wobbling. I should have known better and taken it to a shop to have done. I told him to just put the stocker back on. I asked if it was still leaking, thinking it was coming from the front crank seal. Anyway, he puts the stock pulley back on and says it's all good for now. I get the splash panel washed out and spray down the front of the engine to remove any residual oil... That night I'm STILL smelling oil so I crossed my fingers and took it to the dealer. Sure enough, the front crank seal is bad now. They replaced it under warranty and I'm just hoping that no other damage was done by the bad install. Just a reminder that when you have bits installed, make sure that you know everything is done correctly. I feel like an idiot now, and it's going to take a little while before I trust my car again to be free from defects. I hate this feeling... This in no way should reflect on NST. Their service and product were great, I just got unlucky with a bad install. Now I have an expensive paperweight as the inner sleeve has a nice uneven groove in it from where it was spinning incorrectly. |
I have this same worry. It took 2 of us to get the crank pulley bolt to let go. Im sure that places a lot of pressure and stress on the front seal. I believe Stillen actually recomends pulling the radiator off and using an impact. If anyone has installed the NST products or the Stillen pulleys I would recomend keeping a close eye on the front seal. This is not a reflection of the great parts produced by NST or Stillen, just the crazy torque spec's of the crank bolt. Nissan must have put it on with a impact gun from a tank assembly line. I have the NST products and the quaility is fantastic.

Which belt did you use? The stock belt or the smaller Gates belt? Just curious...
|
I used the shorter Gates belt. I'm glad I kept the stock belt though now that I had to put on the stock pulley. So far since getting it back from the dealer I see no leaks but can still smell some oil. There must still be some on the block where I couldn't reach with the spray nozzle. Hopefully it will burn off soon and I can have some peace of mind.

Are you going to go back to the NST parts?

Got the car back last night after the headers and pulleys were installed. What a difference It goes like a bat out of hell. It gets to 80 km much quicker from a standing start. Its scary fast when you put all the mods together. My mechanic who installed the parts could not believe how fast it excelerates. now. 4.08 gears plus Stillen G3 intake, CBE, cats, headers, with the underdrive pulley and overdrive pulley on the altenator with a cobb tune. Car will be dynoed next week. The voltage did not move on the gauge 14.3 to 14.4.
12.6's here we come !!! |
Can you guys recommend online sites to order the Gates belt? I haven't checked with my local AutoZone yet.
Mike, I'm going to order the pulleys in a few weeks and have my dealer install it. Do you guys still carry the gray color? |

And yes, we will always have the gray and red kits available :tup: |

In for dyno results on a 370z, seems like a cool mod and I can always sell them if and when I go F.I. $200 is a great price as well.

Brief Review
The pulleys and new belt were installed this morning. It took about a couple of hours at the dealership.
Installation Complications The tech had to sand the crank pulley to get it to fit properly. He says there is a difference in diameter of the hole which required a bit of work. It's a good thing he didn't hammer it down. Dealer Install Cost The install bill would've been under $200, but the tally was $363! My dealer gave me a slight discount and dropped it to $324. Initial Impressions Voltages are normal with virtually no change from stock. Slightly more smooth and lighter acceleration and throttle response. SRM throttle blip is quicker. I'll give it a few days to see what MPG difference is (20.6-21.6 MPG stock). Overall a great starter mod! |
Good info on the complications ^
Been looking at this for my next mod, but not excited about the labor cost at $363 for a part that runs, what $200. But the gains may out weigh to total cost. |
