I'm curious too. With the Stillen pulley, you need a new (shorter) belt. You don't need a new belt with NST. That makes me wonder if it's really underdriven. Looking at the original post, NST wrote "The NST Kit includes a 10% Underdrive Crank Pulley along with a 10% Overdrive (faster) Alternator Pulley. This means that the alternator will run at OEM speeds when the NST kit is used." I guess that's why they still use the OEM belt. But if the alternator is running at OEM speeds, doesn't that kinda cancel out the effect of the underdrive crank pulley? I'm by no means an expert on this stuff, so I'm just asking the question.

Alternator doesn't "soak" much in the way of power from the engine.

The power steering pump, water pump, and A/C do.

The idler pulley might be more towards it's upper range of extension with a 10% underdrive and the OEM belt. Is Stillen's underdrive 10% also, or is it higher?

Also, the alternator pulley would be smaller to run at OEM speeds - which would increase the need for a shorter belt even more - like I said, I suspect the idler pulley for belt tension is just more at it's upper range of tolerance...

tcarretti 08-28-2009 11:33 AM

OK, now you guys have me worried... Well, I guess if it works out well I'll consider myself lucky and if it doesn't then it's a lesson learned to do more research and let someone else be the guinea pig...

semtex 08-28-2009 11:51 AM

I wouldn't worry about it, Tony. We're just asking questions, not saying that something is wrong or doesn't add up. You won't know if you really get gains without a before/after dyno though. It's hard to feel such a relatively small gain (relative to the total hp of this car, that is).

NonStopTuning 08-28-2009 03:32 PM

The NST Underdrive Crank Pulley is a 10% underdrive (slow down) pulley, and as you can see in the pic here, it is very close to the OEM pulley in size. This pulley is designed to slow the accessories by roughly 10%... not enough to "kill" any of the accessories, but just enough to free up a nice amount of hp and tq to send to the wheels. The excellent weight reduction also aids in providing better throttle response, quick acceleration, and better fuel economy. We did a bit of testing and decided that 10% is the sweet spot for this application. 20% or 30% underdrive may provide an extra 1/2 or 1 hp or tq at the wheels... but it may do so at the expense of some of the other accessories' functions, so we decided to stick to 10% for our pulley.

http://c2.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/i...e75e914271.jpg

The NST Overdrive Alternator Pulley is a 10% overdrive (speed up) pulley, and as you can see in this pic, it is also very similar in size, to the OEM pulley. This pulley is designed to bring the alternator back to OEM speeds. No slower, no faster. There will be NO hp or tq loss when using this pulley. The crank pulley is the SENDER pulley and it is the pulley that decides how much power the accessories will receive. The size of each accessory pulley determines how this power is used. The alternator will not be overworked, underworked, robbed, killed, etc. when the NST pulley is used. It will work in the same efficiency range as it would with the OEM Nissan pulley.

http://c4.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/i...c068050c17.jpg

NST Pulleys are NOT a "one size fits all" type of design. We take the needs of each application into consideration, we come up with a few prototypes/configurations, and ultimately we sell the KIT that works best based on the data we collect.

Both pulleys are compatible with the OEM belt and the OEM belt has shown to work very well during the past several months of testing. As long as you are using a new belt, or your current belt is in good condition, you should be good to go!

There are other options out there, and some of them are excellent options. We feel that NST offers the best all around kit, with the best all around options, at the best possible prices. Our customers feedback and reviews have consistently proved these to be the truth.

Thanks again everyone, good luck and have fun with all your projects!

Mike,

Thanks for taking the time to clarify this all over the phone. I'm glad you were able to post it up also, as I was going to do it as soon as I got done with work.

I just received my email USPS shipping confirmation, thanks so much for the quick turnaround. I'm looking forward to receiving the pulleys and have contacted a local shop for the install. I'll be sure to post up my thoughts/observations as soon as I get a chance to try this out.

If your product is as good as your support, you'll have a winner on your hands.

Thanks again,

Tony

asking for free parts is cheap and ghetto... especially for a Gt-R, 370Z and R8 owner.

vendors offering is another story.

Granted, for the sake of argument. But that warrants Reality falsely accusing him of not owning either cars (which he does own, for the record) and implying that he is therefore not entitled to an opinion? And it further justifies you mounting a secondary attack on him for simply trying to set the record straight by not letting Reality's false accusation stand?

yeah, I believe that if he have that kinda money to own those 3 cars stated before, these parts that costs 3 digits would mean nothing to him? well it should doesn't mean too much to mean if I can get those 3 cars :)

Just trying to get the point of the debate, did we see him in pics with the cars or something? I've never seen his posts of other cars.

So, if I understand you correctly, family bought him all three cars?

That's the whole problem! ssqpolo's remarks were made in the context of, and in direct response to, what Reality said. By ignoring Reality's remarks, you're taking ssqpolo's post out of context.

Where did he ever say this? Has he done it in some other thread? Because he sure didn't do it in this one. Nowhere in this thread did he say 'hey send me this for free because I own both a 370Z and a GTR and people know me'. He never even brought it up until Reality came from out of nowhere and brought what cars he owns into the discussion.

I can't speak to what he's like on my350, so I'll take your word for it. As for who cares if he owns a gtr and a z, well I sure don't, but Reality obviously does. Heck, he cares enough to call him out in front of everyone and try to humiliate him for being a 'Kid with internet pipe dreams'.

I just don't like seeing people unfairly bullied, guys. That's my only interest in this. If someone a-hole started attacking you (nogood) and Shunya, saying that you have no right to opinions on this board because neither one of you own 370Zs, I'd be standing up for you too. And if you guys stood up for yourselves only for someone to come in afterwards and say 'who gives a rat's ***?', I'd be right there too, defending your right to stand up for yourself against unwarranted attacks.

Just because I'm waiting for my Z to arrive doesn't mean i ain't getting one.
If someone comes up to the both of us telling us we dun have the right to give opinion on this board then I'd tell them that imho I believe I have all the rights to give opinion on this board due to 1st I'm a premium member, 2nd I am one of the top posters on this forum. i believe this is enough for me to earn rights of posting on this forum don't you think so? thanks alot for backing us up if we were ever in need of help but I don't think it's needed at this very moment. maybe helping polo boy is a better idea.

Btw just FYI because you've seen pictures of the cars parked together doesn't mean he owns them to some people.

Nogood, regarding the parts of ssqpolo's post you highlighted, he made those statements to Reality, not to the vendor. You're making it sound as if he made those statements to the vendor in support of a request for free parts. He never did that.
