Default Service engine soon light

Hey guys,

New owner. 2013 base. 2000 miles.

Got a "Service Eng. Soon" light today. The book says it's connected to the EGR system and to first check the gas cap. I fuel it. I know how to screw the cap on, but I check it anyway. Unscrew. Remove. Rescrew the cap. I've driven the car on 4 short trips today. Still got the light.

Any suggestions before I take it to the dealer?

Thanks,

Greg

Stop by an advanced auto, pep boys, etc and ask them to hook up an OBD-2 scanner. They will give you the code for free. That will give you a good point to start.

did you fill the gas with the car on? it usually takes 3-5 starts before the light will go away if it was the gas cap.

give it a few starts if it does not go away , see above

If it was the gas cap and you "fixed" it, pull the negative cable for 10 minutes. Then go for a drive, if you are still having the check engine light autozone will pull the code.

Yea, on my Honda when the check engine light comes out (due to gas cap) it usually takes a couple drives for it to turn off. Sometimes it wont turn off, but I have found that filling up with more gas usually does the trick.

This has happened several times and always self corrects. It did take hundreds of miles one time and many starts.

I have not had this happen for over a year now.

Good luck.

I had this problem with my 2009 shortly after purchase. Checked by dealer and pronounced vapor leak at gas cap. I started giving the cap a few extra turns (not that it makes it any more tight) and have not had the problem since. And yes, it does take several cycles to resolve itself.

FYI if you find out this is not related to the fuel cap...

I had to take my 2013 to the dealer around the same mileage. I thought it was this issue but turns out it was related to the trans (and occurred after some manual shifting) dealer reflashed my computer and I was good to go.

Just wanted to throw that out there because I sat on my problem for a few weeks waiting to see if the gas cap was at fault.

Thanks for the input guys.

I filled up yesterday and drove a few short trips. Still got the light on. Gonna drive the car afew days this week and see if it self-corrects.

I never really did believe it was a loose fuel cap. I'm just working it from that direction.

I'll let you know how it works out.

My SES light comes on randomly anymore, due to my HFCs.

Most of the time it takes 1/2 tank of gas before it goes out. I've given up worrying about it. I can't pinpoint it to bad gasoline, because it does it from multiple stations, etc. so... oh well.

OK, been to the dealer. Got a code for Vent Control Valve. They changed it out. Warranty.

We're back in action!
