Went from 7AT to 6MT

Just a few brief observations because the differences are often a topic of discussion or are a source of questions. Also, if anyone can confirm my impressions, please comment?

I went from a 7AT Sport to a 6MT Sport (2012 to 2014) so a reasonable basis for comparison. My impressions are that the 7AT seems like it would be quicker in a quarter mile (or would likely be for many drivers). Although I haven't tached it up yet (break in period), the 7AT seems MUCH easier to get off the line; it also shifts quickly after launch and I just think it would give up a car length or more.

Where it seems like the 6MT would shine is on a circuit or road course. The rev match is great and the ability to be in the right gear exiting a turn seems like something the 7AT can't match, even with flappy paddles (although they'd help).

If you commute in stop and go traffic, you might be happier with a 7AT, although I don't mind an MT in traffic, an especially not the 370Z 6MT.

The clutch and tightness of the gearbox on the 6MT are an absolute joy. Giggle factor clearly favors the 6MT. Having said that, the 7AT is the most enjoyable auto I have ever owned and it ISNT a less manly alternative to the 6MT; it is solid and enjoyable and reasonable minds could pick it above the 6MT.

Thanks for any thoughts,

I drive a 7AT and I'm proud to own it hahaha just thought it be funny:bowrofl:, nice observation OP it should be helpful to some ppl that might want to change from auto to MT.

:iagree: Great observations!

The biggest disadvantage to me is the skip shifting, which you really can't modulate like you do with the 6MT

The other disadvantage is the fact it can't take big power like the 6mt can. It gets pricey to beef up the 7at. All you need for the manual is a clutch and CSC.

Lol, I said TO ME DAMMIT!!! Not you fancy FI people

Either way chuck has a point, there's a point in time when we 7AT are limited to power and to beef up our vehicles will be pricy lol

Like you wouldn't do it in a heartbeat if it didnt require a fortune in tranny upgrades.

i think staying out of boost in 6/7 and maybe even 5th gear and having a tranny cooler the 7at can handle a decent amount of power.

I don't like the investment cost of FI or the risk in it for higher problems, not just the tranny upgrades.

But PLEASE let's not this turn into a standard 6MT vs 7AT war (not talking to you Chuck)... But we have enough of those threads

No worries. If this turns into a "mine is better than yours ya big sissy" thread, I'll bust out one of my lectures on aquatic bio-films and their role in breaking down dead stuff and cycling nutrients. That's right, one misstep by you folks and you will be punished by me talking about pond scum and, remember, I turned that sh@#t into a dissertation.

Now back to your regularly scheduled (and friendly) tranny* talk.

*by tranny talk, I don't mean a woman that got an addidictome.

SS_Firehawk 10-16-2013 09:43 PM

So about this dissertation...

MT is better! Okay, now about that pond scum?
