Whats the best Short Throw Shifter for the 370z?

I am looking to get a short throw shifter and wanted to get some feedback and pics of before and after from those members that have one or know of one they like...

m4a1mustang 08-11-2009 06:38 PM

I have the B&M shifter and like it. It still does not feel as good as a TR3650 + Steeda Tri-Ax, though. Close, but not as good. :)

kdo2milger 08-11-2009 06:39 PM

I see that the most popular one seems to be the B&M's Precision Sport Shifter PN 45163...

but I am NOT paying 200.00 bucks thats just too much!

any others out there?

It's quite a bit shorter, especially if you go with an aftermarket knob.

That's what I paid from Stillen. I don't know who else sells it.

nice thanks, i'll check them out...

kdo2milger 08-11-2009 08:00 PM

stillen has it listed for 230.00

was it a group buy or a pm'd price?

theDreamer 08-11-2009 08:01 PM

If the Stillen price has gone up, I think it was a short deal, then check out Intense Power.

Good find!

Yeah, I bought it from Stillen when they had a pricing special going on.

I think it's worth the $179. Just bear in mind that you'll need file away a little bit of metal on the shifter-mount in order to allow the short-throw to engage reverse.

 is that a known issue with b&m?

m4a1mustang 08-12-2009 06:04 AM

It's a requirement. If you don't file, you won't engage reverse. I'd imagine others would be the same?

nightfire 08-12-2009 08:29 AM

Are there any short shifters out there that don't change the height of the shifter and are just a linkage short shifter kit?

i talk to B&M Tech support today about the filing down of the shifter casting and he said it is a requirement for all vehicles that this shifter is applicable too...

step 12 of the attached pdf instructions...

kdo2milger 08-12-2009 06:03 PM

whos selling it @ 179 with free shipping?

JoeD 08-13-2009 11:02 PM

LOL...I remember the day when C's short-shifters were the only way to go for a Japanese car. They seem to have dissapeared from the market, though. Any word as to them workin on one for a Z34?

frost 08-13-2009 11:05 PM

short throw shifters are so 5 years ago. It's all about the long rows now

Could you explain the Tremec transmission because I think it's only for mustangs and such. Could you give a few more details?? Like how it's better than other transmissions and short throw kits

Is it safe to assume that NISMO parts will be slightly better (in terms of fitment) than other parts? Or is that a disservice to products from B&M and AMS?

Words like "grind" and "notchy" have me worried quite a bit.

Same question.. I'd assume that a NISMO shifter would be substantially better than the B&M, from what I've heard but I'd love to hear your guys opinion Z1P.

m4a1mustang 11-16-2009 08:10 PM

Is the "Nismo" shifter standard in the Nismo 370Z? If so I will have to go test drive one.

No...It was a Nismo accessory for the 350 as far as I know..

Z1Performance 11-17-2009 08:01 AM

I won't comment on either of the other brands, as I have no direct experience with them. I have sold the B&M before to customers, and they had the same complaints about the noise and notchiness. For that reason, we prefer not to sell the B&M unless the customer specifically requests it (some still do). The NISMO on the other hand, has not given us any issues whatsoever, and we have a bunch of 370Z customers using them since earlier in the year

no, the NISMO has the exact same shifter as all the other 370Z's

dalparadise 03-24-2010 11:05 AM

I'm 3 days in on my B&M short shifter and think it may be the best <$200 I ever spent. I found the OEM shifter to be a bit sloppy and slow. I also found it too tall for my tastes. The B&M is precise and short and the OEM knob sits at the perfect height on it.

On day one it was a little notchy and required more effort to engage than I would have liked, but I assumed it would settle in. Now, about 150 miles later, it's working in nicely and the notchiness is leaving. I figure another couple hundred miles and we'll be perfect. There is a noticeable notch to engage 6th, which is fine, because there's no need to speed shift into overdrive anyway.

I also appreciate the aluminum construction throughout (the base of the OEM was plastic and the lever itself was clumsy steel).

I really love this shifter. It engages much more crisply than OEM and trains the user to use it right, rewarding him with very fine gear changes available fast.

JB-370z 03-24-2010 11:11 AM

I have never heard of breaking in a short shifter!?! But hey if its true good deal. I want one but I need to test someone elses out first. Maybe one day I could test out Dreamers ss. I have loved having a ss on my past cars.

3SeventyZ 03-24-2010 11:28 AM

I have the B&M shifter and my only complaint is that it sometimes rattles around the 5-6K rpm range when at WOT.

I also have a Nismo knob, not the OEM.

Well, obviously it's "breaking in" very quickly. Maybe something just needed to loosen up a little right after the install. Or, maybe I just got used to it.

One other note -- The B&M is noticeably better isolated than the OEM shifter and vibrates much less under acceleration. There's still enough vibration there to feel the car working, but it's much less alarming. Coupled with the exhaust note from the GReddy, I've tackled the "N" and "V" parts of the NVH problem. And, for the life of me, I'm not sure what the naysayers are talking about with the "H" part of that equation.

JB -- if I see you out at a meet or drive around town in the near future, perhaps we can trade cars for an hour or so and you can test out my shifter.

Anyone heard of KGS Engineering?

KGS Racing - 2009-2010 Nissan 370Z Short Shifter - At KGS Engineering

$75

You usually get what you pay for but I can't imagine a short throw shifter taking an enermous amount of engineering to get right?
