When did you start putting in synthetic oil? (Castrol Edge Titanium)

My first service is around the corner and I've put in 3k km on her, I got 5 free oil changes from the dealer.

My whole family uses Castrol Edge Titanium so I think I'm going with that.

My friends says since I get free oil changes, just use up whatever the dealer gives me first + its bad to put in synthetic oil this early.

Is this true?

As long as they use a high-quality oil, it's not going to make that much difference for a DD. They might use whatever you want and charge for the difference in price; ask 'em.

Many recommend not using synthetic until the engine is broken in. You should be ready to go (modern engines don't require the extended break-in periods of "classic" engines).

Amsoil has laboratory test on major oil brands on their site, i know it may be a little biased but for what its worth amsoil didn't place top in all of their tests. Castrol was bottom tier in nearly all.

I wouldn't have an issue switching at 3k miles. That's a decent break-in for a modern engine. As far as the oil goes, I don't have anything good or bad to say about Castrol. It was my go-to oil (in Dino form) in the 80's, but I haven't used it since then. I've used M1 in various weights in the last 10 years, and am currently using M1 0W-40. Used it in three other high performance vehicles, and like the results (and Blackstone reports).

Its actually 3k kilometers.

I've had good experience with Castrol Edge Titanium, the one that comes in the gold bottle. But I'll do a little more research on it.

Oh oh...oil fights!

AMSOIL all the way. Hehe

I'm not even going to try to go there.

Its more of a "should I switch to synthetic after only 3k kilo"?

Then stick with what you know. And yes, you can do the switch now to synthetic but why not wait until you actually need to change the oil? Did you read the OM on how you use your car and what maintenance schedule you should be using?

20 miles took out factory synthetic after hard break in, comes stock with synthetic already ;)

Put in regular dino oil for 1100.

Then put in redline 5w30

phunk 09-15-2013 09:53 PM

Mobil1 5w30 since first change. Currently about 54,000 miles. Always had a loud valvetrain, not sure if factory oil would help of helped.

I waited too long (9k) before switching. You can switch to full synth now and get your car used to it.

Baer383 09-16-2013 09:10 PM

Pennzoil synthetic @ 300 miles when I put my SC on.

ANMVQ 09-18-2013 06:12 AM

Mobil 1 since 500 miles, I used to use Castrol syntec in my race car :) (87 SS 650HP) Good oil

Motion Lab 09-18-2013 09:40 AM

The OEM spec calls for a ester based oil which should be a quality synthetic. We like to use Redline synthetic oils or Joe Gibbs Racing oils for the VQ37HR. These are extremely sheer resistant fully synthetic oils. The Redline is an ester based oil and the JGR is a more advanced mPAO oil. I'm not sure what type of base stock the Castrol Edge is formulated from, but you might want to take that into consideration depending on what type of driving you do with the vehicle. Also if you have an oil cooler and aren't racing this information might not be quite as important, but expensive oil is still a hell of a lot cheaper than your engine!

Thanks,
Alex Goodwin
