I wouldn't call that out of line. a Few hours of work. It's easier to remove the alternator pulley with it on a workbench as opposed to being in on the vehicle. Labor is labor, unless you are doing it, sometimes it will cost more than the parts themselves.

Dang, it's always painful to see shop labor cost more than the part. How hard would it be to DIY this?

I don't think it is too hard to do with basic tools.

DIY isn't hard. I would have felt comfortable doing it but I don't have the tools needed.
