Don't creep to a stop in your z. You have the sports pkg with the big brakes. While it doesn't hurt them, they operate much better under moderate to heavy braking. Now, to the question: I'm guessing if you're in sports mode, the car is gauging your speed as if it were having the brakes applied by a person wanting to be in sports mode, not creeping to stops. Check to see if the downshift changes out of sports mode, and waits until you're almost at a dead stop.
