I believe the K&N and Mobil 1 are the same filter, but with one small difference. Unfortunetly I don't remember the difference anymore but I remember I'd rather use the Mobil 1 because of it.

Personally I use the Puralotor PureOne, but just this last change I switched to a Fram Ultra. They are both very good filters. I'm trying to nail down the efficiency on both but getting conflicting info. Also I disagaree with using a cheap filter, there are other issues besides filtering that are worth considering, like element construction that doesn't fall apart, ADBV that work as they should, etc.

Brandon,
I also agree with you on not making sense to use an inexpensive filter. Just doesn't sound reasonable to spend 80 - 90 bucks on oil and then filter it through something that's not going to do a good job.
From previous experience, along with seeing people who actually cut filters open, I can tell you that the K&N has more filtering material than Fram.
On another note, it's always interesting to see how the filters are made. I went with the Purolator Pure One. I don't abuse my car and always wait for the oil temp to get up around 180 before I start heaving revving.
Thanks for all of the dialogue on this topic. And am going to pull the Purolator apart next Fall when I change my oil again.

royal purple makes a great filter. it is made of synthetic material as well as the housing is thick. you can tell just by picking it up compared to others it is made well. if you cut it open you can really see what your paying for. I wish I had taken pics of when I did this but after seeing the construction i will never buy another brand especially running synthetic oil.

Purolator PureONE PL10193

larger than stock and it fits the sandwich plate for my oil cooler

Yes, K&N and Mobil-1 are the same filter with different labeling and paint. The only difference (aside from price) is the little removal nut that K&N welds on the top.

I've been running K&N HP-1010 for a long time now without issue, I think it's a pretty decent filter choice on this car. The 1010 is a slightly longer version of the 1008, which still fits in the car fine (even with an oil cooler sandwich plate under it) and gives you a little more filter surface area. M1, Purolator, and probably everyone else also makes the same sort of extra-long variant for cars, too, you just have to look up the part number (or run through their site and search by diameter and thread pitch, etc).
