Oil filter of choice
First off, don't flame me for placing this topic in the wrong category. I tried doing multiple searches and didn't find what I was looking for.
Have had my Z for a year now and would like to again change the oil before I put it away for the winter. Have seen multiple posts suggesting either the K&N or the Purolator Pure One filter over the OEM. Has anyone ever cut one of these filters open to see how much fiber there actually is? Am tossed between the Purolator's larger size and what I've seen from previous experience with the K&N. That being, even though the K&N is smaller, it has more fiber to absorb. Just like many other owners, choosing the right filter when we have several choices isn't all that easy. Info, suggestions backed up with information is more towards what I'm looking for. Thanks in advance... Pat |
I have aways ran Amsoil oil and filters in all of my cars and they have never had a problem. Also, Amsoil is known for filtration down into the microns. Used it on my 350z and every other car. Just my two cents.

59,000+ miles and no complain so far. Started using this from 3,600 miles. But I did like the K&N too but this one is about 5 bucks cheaper. So, I went with this. There's a thread where a member cut all different types of oil filters. You may have to go to bobistheoilguy forum. Moved to engine section |
I use the Purolator, probably because I used AK's DIY. Not sure about the differences in performance of the two sizes people seem to go between (stock size or a little bigger). The best thing is to just change your oil regularly, that's more important than OEM vs. KN vs. Purolator

Hi Pat, it's an oil filter...don't loose sleep over it dude. Try searching on Google for oil filter comparisons. This has been beat to death...resurrected, and then beat to death over and over. I use a Classic Purolator filter from Walmart. I believe they are $3 |
Thanks for the info...
I realize it's an oil filter. But I also know i'm quite fond of this particular car and don't mind paying extra for the "right" filter. Will more than likely go with the Purolator simply because it's a larger filter which should be able to hold more oil....Thanks for the feedback...

im a big fan of the mobil 1 oil filter. If you want a bigger filter you can use the filter for the titan on the z. Its got the same type of thread bolt and also the same housing sizes.

Purple is the best oil filter and made for synthetic oil, casing thickness is larger and has a silicone pressure cover inside compared to rubber

I use the Mobil 1 Extended Life filter in my Z, no problems reported after 30K

I believe the K&N and Mobil 1 are the same filter, but with one small difference. Unfortunetly I don't remember the difference anymore but I remember I'd rather use the Mobil 1 because of it.
Personally I use the Puralotor PureOne, but just this last change I switched to a Fram Ultra. They are both very good filters. I'm trying to nail down the efficiency on both but getting conflicting info. Also I disagaree with using a cheap filter, there are other issues besides filtering that are worth considering, like element construction that doesn't fall apart, ADBV that work as they should, etc. |
Brandon,
I also agree with you on not making sense to use an inexpensive filter. Just doesn't sound reasonable to spend 80 - 90 bucks on oil and then filter it through something that's not going to do a good job. From previous experience, along with seeing people who actually cut filters open, I can tell you that the K&N has more filtering material than Fram. On another note, it's always interesting to see how the filters are made. I went with the Purolator Pure One. I don't abuse my car and always wait for the oil temp to get up around 180 before I start heaving revving. Thanks for all of the dialogue on this topic. And am going to pull the Purolator apart next Fall when I change my oil again. Pat |
royal purple makes a great filter. it is made of synthetic material as well as the housing is thick. you can tell just by picking it up compared to others it is made well. if you cut it open you can really see what your paying for. I wish I had taken pics of when I did this but after seeing the construction i will never buy another brand especially running synthetic oil.

larger than stock and it fits the sandwich plate for my oil cooler |

I've been running K&N HP-1010 for a long time now without issue, I think it's a pretty decent filter choice on this car. The 1010 is a slightly longer version of the 1008, which still fits in the car fine (even with an oil cooler sandwich plate under it) and gives you a little more filter surface area. M1, Purolator, and probably everyone else also makes the same sort of extra-long variant for cars, too, you just have to look up the part number (or run through their site and search by diameter and thread pitch, etc). |
