Many others must be a bunch of people like you who are looking to spend the least amount of money possible on an oil change with little regard to optimum vs average to subpar performance depending on your driving style and/or weather conditions of the day.
Why not spend an extra $9 and give a better oil a try.:tiphat:

ronaldr911 12-26-2011 10:13 PM

Is it only $9? Where can you get redline for that price? The MB1 is like $30 / 5qts.

Didn't realize how sensitive people are about their oil.... I havent even done an oil change on it yet - just got it a month ago!

Before my first oil change i did a lot of research on this site and others and found mobil 1 full synthetic to be a pretty high quality oil. UNKNOWN you make it sound like it is junk. I have been pretty happy with it, in fact i noticed the exact opposite my oil temps have been consistantly lower with the mobil 1.

VCuomo 12-26-2011 10:18 PM

Oh God, not another "my oil is better than yours" thread... :icon14:

ronaldr911 12-26-2011 10:36 PM

Also - I looked at the product spec. sheets for MB1 and RL and they don't seem like one is way worse than the other... I guess I can run MB1 for a for months and then try RL and see if there is a difference.

Mobil 1 Extended Performance

Red Line Synthetic Oil - Motor Oil - 5W30 Motor Oil

Also in the owners manual under “ENGINE OIL AND OIL FILTER RECOMMENDATION" it does not mention esters... But - I do see under the specifications where it does say it is "recommended".

Just looking for some advise - Not trying to argue about oils.

svt to 370z 12-26-2011 10:50 PM

i asked the nissan dealership by my house. The guy working service there said that its not essential to run the ester but it is recommended. I guess it probably depends on who you talk to and what kinda mood they are in that day.

I said castrol edge is 9 bucks more and keeps the engine twmps lower under harder driving.

I use Mobil 1 and the other day a unicorn popped out of my tailpipe.:icon23:

Dude, do some research on here from 09 when many Z's were battling different types of oil issues. Its not like nissan ester was recommended right off the bat. There were many issues going on with using some basic oils. the only reason it is still only a recommendation is because some Z's didn't get to the point to have to go to the dealership for service. But anyway, this is my last post on the topic. In actuality, there's a plethora of oil threads on here. This is just one of hundreds.
Like I said earlier. If you are convinced mobil1 is best for these HR engines, then by all means be my guest.

Happy holiday n good luck to ya Ronald :tiphat:

Thought Castrol Edge and M1 EP are both group IV oils.

EazyD 12-27-2011 12:14 AM

I see lower temps with Mobile 1. Did conventional for first two oil changes then switched. Also can go what, 7500 mi before another change?

I use redline...my logic is this: $30K + car. Price difference between M1 and Redline ~$5.

Oil change every 5k miles, 100,000/5000=20

6 quarts per oil change

20 oil changes @ 6 qts = 120 qts total.

120 x 5 = $600 price difference in oil between Redline and Mobil 1 over 100,000 mi on a $30,000+ high performance car. Seriously, do you really give that much of a fvck? That's a little more than my monthly payment on the car.

ronaldr911 12-27-2011 01:18 AM

^ I think the price difference is greater for me. M1 costs about $25 for 5qts, but it looks like redline is around $50... so the difference would be 120 qts x $25 = $3,000. Over the life of the car - not earth shattering I guess.

Also saw this post which was interesting :

Making me consider the Castrol more and more... although I don't think either one will really eff your car up if you check and drain it regularly.

I think your math's a little off...that's for 5 quarts so you wouldn't multiply that by 120 you'd multiple it by 120/5 = 24

24 x $25 = $600

ronaldr911 12-27-2011 01:44 AM

my bad - i see you were saying $5 per quart... thats right i guess its $600. :icon14:
