Is it possible I'm scraping my Tranny?

Hey guys,

Just wondering if its possible that I could be scraping my shift linkage/tranny?

It happens whenever I leave my underground condo parking since I've been lowered on TEIN's

Its steep, so at the part where I even out, I scrape. Now at first I thought it was the little dust shields in front of the front wheels...but last few times I actually kept my hand on my shift knob...and I feel a vibration at the same time I scrape

I haven't had a chance to get on a lift yet to check for damage but I'm thinking I'm scraping my tranny casing? I imagine its pretty tough cast iron...but over time, this can't be good...

It's aluminum, not cast iron.

Your shift knob could be vibrating when you scrape for a number of reasons. IIRC there is pretty decent clearance for the transmission case so it would be a little difficult to hit right there, but you won't know for sure until you take a look under the car...

If you take a look at an underbody picture of the 370, it's unlikely you'd be hitting the transmission. There are a number of other bits that would scrape first.

You should be scraping the transmission mount and brace. It's a black piece holding up the tranny. That piece should be able to take some abuse with no problems.

Thanks guys!

Thats comforting, although everytime it happens its cringe worthy lol. I'm still going to check it out as soon as i can..

All scraping is cringe worthy! I make my wife walk down to the next block when i pick her her from this shop who's entrance looks to steep for me to enter/leave :P

I have similar problems, but I guess its just apart of being low! My biggest problem is my exhaust scraps everywhere I go. :shakes head:

On a side note, I too scrape when I go too fast over a speed bump but for sure it's not the tranny but the cross brace that protects it (or the exhaust?). Anyway. No big deal... just take it slow!

Since you scrape occasionally... You're ALMOST low enough ;)

You're probably dragging the trans cross member, if anything. It's lower than the tranny and a few other things. Get under the car some time and look for scrapes.

This is why as bad as I want an FI exhaust I can't do it. I drive hard so putting on of those exhausts is a no go. I'm just going to get an hfc and y pipe. When I go turbo I'll get a turbo exhaust with it.

:iagree: I scrapped 5 times on the way to work... maybe I should slow it down a bit. But once my exhaust flanges wear down a lil bit I should be fine :icon17:

I'm not lowered at all and i scrap everywhere, but it's just the black plastic things under the front bumper.

I approve!

And before any of the "function > form" crew chime in, my post about lowness was made in jest. Sort of. For a street car, I see no reason in having the optimal most hardcore track suspension. If you'd rather slam your car than maintain perfect suspension geometry, have at it! If you want to track your car, then don't slam it. Different strokes...

Yea pretty sure its not you transmission scraping the ground. When my exhaust hit I sometimes feel it in the shifter. I dont think i've ever felt it vibrate when scrapping the chin though.

:roflpuke2: My girl waited for a parking spot on the first floor of her apartment complex just so she could move her car out of it when I came to visit. She heard me go over one speed bump and told me I never had to worry about parking past the first floor again.
