lets move this into a new thread, I have a long list of like 18-20 people already. I will make the new thread now and post the link here.

New GB thread.

I just did this today. The lower spring was a bitch to get out but the upper came out with ease. I went down to the hardware store and bought a weaker spring and will probably install that in a few days

JPTO 06-29-2011 12:06 AM

Got my spring in the mail today (Canada post was on strike)

My bottom pin was a pain to get out, ruined the pin in the process. Looking at the bottom bracket it looks like the holes weren't machined cleanly.

Took the car out for spin without a spring. It might be a placebo effect but it's feels so much better. 1-2 shifts are finally smooth.

a side note, I live in a condo with underground monitored parking and it turns out the security guards are paying attention, two different guards came out to check that I wasn't trying to hotwire my own car, guess all they saw was a pair of legs twitching trying to get the stupid pin out

NeverBoneStck 06-29-2011 01:08 AM

Does anyone have god awful creaking noise with their new spring??

spring wont creak, but the pins/assembly might. All the pins are lubed pretty well from the factory.

I just used some lithium grease I had laying around. Fixed the creak from the pins.

I finally got around to installing my spring and after some driving time, wanted to share my experience for those interested in the spring. I had been following the first group buy of Esfourteen's clutch helper spring but since I was in China, I hoped I could hold off ordering until I got back... Well, that didn't work as I has no patience. Temptation was too much after seeing all the rave reviews and thankfully, Nick still had a few left so I took him up and finally got it installed today.

Installation:

A number of people have commented that you need to file/sand a few areas to get the pins on the top and bottom back in. My observation is that you should leave the bottom pin in as you do not need to remove it and will make re-installation that much easier. The part that prevented me from sliding the pin back in the top was that the top hole in the actual spring assembly was a close fit with the pin so I used a round file to take the internal edges off. After losing a circlip after it shot off into the footwell, I went to Autozone and bought a kit of them and had to file one of the kit circlips to get it to fit. Otherwise, it was a pretty straightforward if not physically awkward install haha.

Impressions:

First thing I noticed is that pedal effort was reduced slightly. It does not have that springy over-boosted feel that the stock spring had which is absolutely awesome. There is a noticeable amount of slack at the top of the pedal but I can live with that. The best way I can describe the new feel of the clutch is that it is much more natural. The pedal movement is more linear through the entire range of the clutch's actuation and instantly allowed me to shift more smoothly and consistently in stop and go traffic. It also makes me feel like I can modulate the clutch with much more smoothness than before as the clutch pedal isn't pushing against your foot as much since the stock spring over-boosted the rebound.

Bottom line is this is one of the best mods I have done to the Z to date and for the price and prompt delivery Nick commands, is one of the best bang for the buck drive-ability improvements out there at the moment.

I have my spring here in NY and I have yet to attempt an install- is there a step by step guide somewhere with pics and or video? The car is brand new and Im hesitant to F - it up.

MD

Evil Sports 07-27-2011 05:51 AM

I have been running with NO spring and really got dialed in with the clutch. Im concerned that if I put nicks spring in Im gonna have to refigure out how to drive this thing again.
Has anyone just left the spring out? is there any obvious reason not to leave it out.

There is a picture of the assembly on the first page of the thread but it isn't needed... I pulled the C clip and pin (pedal fully depressed) in a suit right after work and it was 5 min max. Didn't need to shave anything and had no problem with assembly.

Unlike everyone else I don't think the feel is DRASTICALLY different however it gives me just enough that I can acurately feel the engagement. This is most important in the lower gears where the torque curve can really make you look foolish with a passenger in the car.

Like others have said, best mod for the money.

This was addressed at the beginning of the thread.

Going to try this tonight.

Drex 07-29-2011 12:00 AM

finally got around to installing the spring. love it. the clutch feels 100% better

NewYorkJon34 07-29-2011 03:29 PM

Installed mine today, def a pita. Took about 20-30 min, I only removed the bottom pin set. It's a cool mod, shifting feels better, not as "overboosted" as before.

bluenoser 08-04-2011 06:13 PM

Is there interest in another group buy for replacement springs? I missed out on the first one but found a spring supplier that has suitable softer springs that will work. The pricing is much better with higher quantity but I don't want to get stuck with a bunch of these.

nevermind. I found a single at Fastenal (p/n 0166722) that should do the trick

UPDATE (08/11/11): This Fastenal spring doesn't fit correctly so don't buy it for this....

Good find. Let us know if it fits and works correctly.

Installed the new spring today. Certainly is an improvement on the action of the clutch pedal.

Easy removal of the lower pin. Used a pair of vice-grips on the head of the pin to ease it out, prevented the pin from falling behind the kick panel. Used the vice-grips to re-install pin, again no issues.

Curious as to the results.

Worked great! as said earlier, clutch feel has improved. Recommend this mod to everyone.

V8Killer 08-11-2011 07:49 AM

Ya I would love to get my hands on one I was under the impression there were some left over and pm'd esfourteen but no reply.

esfourteen 08-11-2011 11:01 AM

Yeah I got flooded with requests sorry, I might have an extra but I had to wait as 2 people in Texas did not receive theres and I wanted to make sure they got another one if it was lost.

LMBmikeZ 08-11-2011 12:31 PM

Ya there was a lot of people requesting one not just v8killer!

Also we are still waiting to her how others made out with the other springs they had found! Anyone have any luck?

Okay well let me know when you get a chance. Also will this be a good upgrade with an upgraded clutch? I have a JWT clutch.

Ok there's good news and bad news. The Fastenal spring I mentioned earlier doesn't work. The inside diameter of the spring doesn't fit correctly over the assembly. I ordered the day after I measured it and I guess I wasn't paying close enough attention when I placed the order.

The good news is that I found another spring after I realized the error that definitely does work. P/N 72577 at Century Spring is the winner 72577 - COMPRESSION SPRING - Part Characteristics | Century Spring Corp. The spring rate is roughly 20% of the stock spring and it feels very similar to running without the spring installed. The bad news is that you need to order 4 of them to meet their minimum order quantity.

Here are some pics of the Century spring

Are u sure that the fastenal spring doesn't work? Looking at the sizes and spec looks like it should be a go!

Anyway I'll be trying one of the ones from fastenal Monday when it gets here!

The ID of the Fastenal spring is about 0.76". When you pull the assembly apart you can see the spring fits around a collar on the aluminum piece near the lower pin and around a sheet metal hat thing on the other end. The diameters of both the "hat" and the "collar" are around 0.83" so the spring should have a minimum ID of 0.84" to guarantee a good fit. You might be able to force the Fastenal spring to fit but probably not without tweaking it somehow. Sorry if my earlier post caused you to buy a useless spring, I jumped the gun a bit on that one...

LMBmikeZ 08-13-2011 07:00 PM

No worries it's np! My buddy who works there hooks it up with huge discounts!

These are the specs he gave me though for the #71 spring

OD - 1"
Wire size -.12"
Length - 2.5"
lbs capacity - 47lbs

Looks like it should work the ID would still be left at .88" but we will see if it fits on Monday!

N8GTOL 08-14-2011 02:14 PM

You need to subtract the wire size twice from the OD to get the ID. Your ID would then measure .76" which agrees with the numbers blue posted.

So just to confirm, P/N 72577 at Century Spring does work and fixes the spring problem? If that's the case I'd be willing to get in on a group buy with 3 other people if anyone is interested.

I have that spring (Century Spring Product# 72577) installed. It fits perfect and only gets rid of the looseness of the clutch pedal when its not depressed. Otherwise feels like there is no spring installed. Exactly what i was looking for!!!

I might do this too. The esfourteen spring is awesome but I want less.

I'm glad it's working out for you! I'm happy with it as well. The P/N is definitely 72577

Vaughanabe13 08-18-2011 03:00 PM

So who else wants to get one? Looks like we do need to order 4 springs so somebody needs to buy and distribute. I'd be willing to do it if there are 3 other takers...

Add me to the list. I want one asap!

KingZee 08-18-2011 07:26 PM

I switched my spring to the Century Spring part # so I have esfourteen's spring. PM me if you're interested.
