Getting Nissan to do something about the oil cooler...

Hey Everyone,

Talked to my Nissan dealership's service manager about getting an oil cooler installed. Told him about the plight we're all experiencing with the price and availability of the NISMO oil cooler and some of the possible issues with using a Stillen 25 row oil cooler on a NISMO. He recommended I call 1 800 NISSAN 1 and talk to Customer Affairs, so I did and filed a complaint about the issue.

I know some have gotten written responses basically from the company indicating that the car works as it should when not being pushed. But has anybody called yet, further more in high volume?

I have the name and extension the rep I spoke with today...I'm sure if more than enough of us called with the same complaint to the same person, it would make it very clear to Nissan that we are not happy with the oil cooler situation.

What do you guys say?

If you want your voice heard Call 1 800 NISSAN 1 xt 47235 CA Rep: Tiffany

Maybe i'm just naive, but why would this get locked? It's a legitimate problem with several Nissan models, spanning many years. Getting support to get Nissan to do something about it is good for the community, why would a moderator lock a thread based on that?

I know this is nothing new, but at least I'm trying to do something about it, not just for me but for Z owners in general.

@CCastro

I'm guessing Nissan never responded?

Not another one.

From the oil cooler thread:

Aggressive driving of the 370Z on a race track at sustained high engine speeds can cause increases in oil temperature and may activate this engine protection system. To avoid activation of this engine protection system and these reduced peak engine speeds, Nissan recommends an oil cooler be fitted to the 370Z before driving it on a race track. A Nissan Motorsports accessory oil cooler kit is available for customer purchase through authorized Nissan dealerships for race track use. The part number is 21300-SS370.

An oil cooler is not necessary for normal operation of the vehicle on public roads. The addition of an oil cooler would have raised the price of the car and potentially moved it out of the reach of some customers. Value has been a core principle of the Z car since the original 240Z and we choose to uphold this core principle by not adding additional costs that are unnecessary for normal use. For those individuals who choose to drive their vehicle on a race track, the oil cooler is available as an aftersales item.

They aren't going to do anything about it.. you are pissing in the wind my friend.

buy yourself an oil cooler and enjoy your car.

Yeah I've already read that pile of bull ****.

I was going that route until they told me that they don't have it in stock and that it is back ordered for who knows how long. Sorry I'm not paying for something that I might get months later on down the road at this point. I just started looking in to this and there are other things to try, anyone who gives up that easily deserves to pay $780 and wait up to 4 months for something that isn't even usable yet.

Why such thin skin regarding this topic? If you're complacent, spent the money already on the oil cooler and or simply have no drive to do anything about it, why does this thread pertain to you? Unless you're bored and looking for a flame?

Liquid_G 03-08-2011 04:29 PM

I bought an oil cooler last year, because after READING the dozens of threads about this topic, I realized that Nissan wasn't going to do jack about it. So i bought a cooler and haven't had to worry about oil temps since.

Also, oil coolers don't cost $780, they can be had for half that and can be purchased today.. They just don't say "NISSAN" on them.. most say Setrab.

Good luck on your quest for a free oil cooler. Post up pics when you get it.

Well, whatever you do, get one with a 200-210*F thermostat so you keep oil temps at optimal levels and don't have to **** around with the block off plate BS in the winter...

Thanks for jumping to conclusions. You automatically assume that because my post count is < 20, that I haven't done my research. :ugh2:

Glad the solution was so simple for you. My car is new, under warranty, happens to be a NISMO and needs a proper oil cooler that is currently in stock that doesn't have any fitment issues and doesn't invalidate my warranty. Is this making sense yet?

Again, I already did my research. My options are a bit more limited than yours were.

Thanks for nothing. Where did I say I wanted it for free? I filed a complaint and asked for help.
I won't likely be posting pics because most likely nothing will come of this but, thanks for drawing this out because the time it took me to file a complaint was less than having to respond to all of your crap.

Thanks dad. Those were my sentiments exactly. The operative word is try. Can't believe this is so bothersome to some people around here.

Are you sure about that? I thought even the Nissan cooler voided the warranty...? I'd double check to make sure.

spearfish25 03-08-2011 06:20 PM

Warranties aren't voided unless the aftermarket part caused the problem. It's been said a hundred million times. Then comes the argument that Nissan will still blame the part and you'll have to go to court. Then one rebuts that you can remove an oil cooler before taking the car in for service. Then the angel says that's dishonest. Then you just reach down, find your balls, and make a decision about installing an oil cooler or not.

No, I know all that -- I mean I thought they explicitly voided the warranty if you added the oil cooler. Not saying it's legal or fair, but if the OP is concerned about that, it would be good to know if there's a potential battle to be had or if Nissan just assumes the oil cooler doesn't affect the warranty.

In other words, if the warranty isn't an issue, he can get whatever oil cooler he wants -- he doesn't have to get the Nissan one.

Called the dealer, they said the Nissan and Stillen oil coolers would not void the warranty unless it was proven to cause a problem with the car. Installation of any another manufacturers/retailers product will void my warranty if they find out I have the part on the car.

Stillen's don't fit the NISMO without modification so, I'm left with the Nissan cooler which is supposedly back ordered.

Would love to get the 34 row Z1 installed on there, cheaper and just as big as the NISMO. But alas, I'm screwed with warranty issues.

thats the case with all oil coolers. will not void the warranty unless that part caused te issue. Its called the law. not a dealerships word. They cannot void a warranty on a car due to seeing a mod or change. They have to show that installation of the part, caused a problem , if/when a problem occurs. And thats it.

Thus, all oil coolers will have the ame affect on your warranty. So your options are really limited to which one you think is best. Also, you can research this and find it posted quite a few times. If your dealerships tells you differently, they dont know wtf they are talking about which is about the norm with most dealerships service dept's.

In fact, there are still employee's on this forum who could tell you the same.

And lastl, z1 oil cooler doesnt require any modification (except for flipping the harmonic balancer 180degres which really doesnt do anything). As for others with nismo, dont know.

not going to get into a pissing match with you.. Other oil coolers will work and are cheaper.. your nismo is not special.

Jordo! 03-08-2011 10:36 PM

I'm just wondering why Nissan will also offically stand behind the Stillen one... what's so special about that one relative to any other?

Stillen has a special relationship with Nissan. Back in the Z32 days, there was a Stillen 300zx that was sold in Nissan dealerships, and Steve Millen was their factory driver who won many titles in the USA for Nissan.

Regardless, why is everyone crapping on the OP? the more people who complain to Nissan, no matter how many times they say the car is ok, they may eventually cave in, or at least put the liquid cooler they have on the 350 on our car.

I heard what you had to say, we differ in opinion. You dealt with your oil cooler your way, I'm dealing with it my way. Never claimed my way is better than yours but, seems you think I am an idiot for trying my way and feel the need to tell me so. I'm not hurting anyone by trying to get Nissan off their *** and I'm not hurting anyone by being cautious about voiding my warranty. Whats your fuckin deal man?

daisuke149 and spearfish25, thanks for your constructive input.
