Favorite Synthetic Oil
A friend swears by the Royal Purple, so I bought some last night. Only other synthetic that I've tried is Mobil 1. Any feedback on the RP?? or other brands?

I have always used Mobile 1 synthetic, and never had any issues. I hear Motul is good as well.
|
Your not thinking of changing the oil are you?

I want to switch to a Synthetic around 2000 or so. |

More people prefer RP, over Mobil! I need and look into Motul, I don't have enough feed back on that brand. |
Motul smells sooo nice you could drink it - and the engine always seems to love it (I'm sure that's just my imagination) - but I tend to go for the cheapest, because I'm an old skinflint :tiphat:

Pure Power. Check into it :).

The RP is awesome, but it burns too quickly.

Gang,
I have used Mobil 1 in everything I own for the last several years. My 03 350 has 56K on it and has had Mobil 1 in it since 500 miles. Same for my Toyota X-Runner and Toyota Camry Hybrid. I used it in my 95 and 96 Impala SS's and several cars before them and have had no problems at all. BTW I changed them all at 500 or less miles. |
Royal Purple or Mobil 1.
I plan on using Royal Purple. |

I'll probably ad an oil cooler down the line, but for now just want to help it out a bit with a good synthetic. |
Only ones I have used are Mobil 1 since they are available everywhere here. I don't change oil brands. Whichever I use, I'll stick to it.

i've always been a Castrol guy

I tend to buy Red Line when I find it on sale (not very often!) but RP and Mobil 1 are very good too. Usually I wind up with Mobil 1 because it's less expensive (can't call it cheap!).
|
Castrol has a new synthetic out that they claim has 8x better wear protection than Mobil1. I've always used Mobil1 in the past though.
Castrol Edge |
^^ I voted for that, but i usually use Castrol Syntec

That's a big unnecessary waste of money, time&effort! Especially the money! That's over 720 dollars for one car per year, in oil! The oil us not dirty(unless your tracking). The proprieties haven't had a chance too work. |

I've only used Amsoil in my cars. I've used both their 5W-30 oil and their manual transmission fluid (in my Civic). The Lexus gets serviced at the dealership, so I can't comment on what they use haha. |

If anyone is running synthetic, there's no reason to change it before 4 to 5K miles (unless you do some SERIOUS tracking) |
AMSOil or Redline.

Mobil 1 here.

That Castrol Edge website is retarded... But aside from that, I'd try it after the break-in period.

I change oil every 6000 miles and rotate tires and replace air filters at the same time. Its easy to keep track of what needs to be done that way. Sorry for the mix up. |
6000? I change my oil every 3,000... I drive my cars aggressively all the time though...
|
6000 miles?! Holy hell man... 3000 should be the max.
|
^^^ On synthetic, if you're just daily driving, 6000 is what you'd expect on average.
|
Amsoil or Mobil 1 5W40 Turbo Diesel (for ANY FI Gasoline Engines) FTW.
Royal Purple and Motul 300V are great race oils but break down quickly. IMO, perfect for a track weekend, but I wouldn't run them in typical 3K ~ 5K oil change cycles. |
^^^I use Mobil 1 TD for my SRT-4. Works like a charm!

3000K = Dealer revenue stream
Quote:
I used to change Spark Plugs, Contact Points and Condenser every 1500 miles in the old days also. But the automotive industry has come along ways in the last 50+ years since I started driving. Toyota for example recommends 5000 miles between changes using regular oil. The Dealers are still hanging onto the 3000 mile thing as a revenue stream and they are trying to convince you to also. :tiphat: |

Anyway, as technology gets better, the need to maintain something becomes less arduous. Of course, that is if you don't take your vehicle to the limit often. If so, then following a strict and comprehensive maintenance program is key to longevity. Otherwise, just follow your manufacturer's suggestions and you'll be fine. |
I use Mobil 1 for My Mercedes c-180k so i think i will use the same in my 370z when i get it

Also, when I had my SRT-4, I changed the oil every 3,000 miles on the dime because it was turbocharged and the turbo was oil-cooled. But with an N/A car I think 5000-6000 should definitely be more than sufficient. I actually read online that synthetic oil breaks down a certain amount after 6,000 miles and thats when it performs the best. |
I started using royal purple like, 4 years ago. No desire to ever switch to anything else.
|
rp 3 to 5k and k&n oil filter.
