5th Gear Grind...Just Noticing

...this after about 8600 miles.

First time I noticed the grind was after a quick 1-2 upshift, then quickly laying off the throttle, shifting rapidly into from 2nd to 5th - ggrrrinddd.

Now after reading this thread, I'm dreading. I have experimented a bit, and the grind only happens when shifting to 5th from ANY other gear quickly (up or down). Does not seem to matter how well I depress the clutch. It works fine if I wait a second or so for the gears to sync.

It also seems to lessen the chance of grinding if I slant the 4-5 upshift more diagonally "/", rather than "N"-shaped, if you know what I mean. I'm just disappointed that I have to wait longer to snap into 5th than any other gear now. Other combinations that skip, like 3-6, and 1-3 seem to work fine.

I have about 11k miles on my car and this has happened 3 or 4 times and could not be repeated. I was a 100% sure I shifted correctly and thought it was just one of the many quirks of this transmission. The clutch was down all the way each time and it was just in normal highway traffic. Each time that happened, I moved the shifter into neutral, released the clutch pedal, depressed it again and it shifted into 5th without the grinding as if it never happened.

Thanks for posting this, I will monitor from now on to see if the problem gets worst.

Ive got an 09 with 2600 miles on it and the 4th to 5th gear grind just started for me. It happens at slow speeds clutch fully depressed about 4-10 times before it goes away if not more its really pissing me off the car is practically brand new.

I wouldn't worry, just bring it to the dealer to get the process of
replacement started

wait, are we talking a crunching when putting the Z in gear, or transmission grinding?

Josh@STILLEN 11-29-2010 09:18 PM

It's as it's going into gear.. typically during more spirited driving, but as it gets worse, it will be almost impossible to get it into gear without hearing a grinding noise..

Hmmm.. I think I need to take mine in then.....

Expect a bit of a challenge from the dealer.. you'll most likely need to get a tech in the car and be able to duplicate the issue before they will look to resolving it, which generally means throwing a new transmission at it.

It's pretty common now for folks to walk in saying they have seen a forum thread and this is what it is.. dealers can shy away from that. But if you're cool and get someone who cares, and show them the problem, it should be a warranty item they have no problem with. Wouldn't take them long to check things out and see how common this is.

They don't go in and fix the synchros or do anything besides just replace the transmission.

i have an appointment on Monday!

Just had mine replaced same issue downshifting from 6th no Sycnrev on, also I coast a lot and the tech said to don't do that,, apperntly this is a different build with no synchros like the old days,, I have the extended warranty so I will still be coasting, though I will blip the throttle before I threw it into 5th,, for 45,000 they should be able to make a tranny that works in the real world,, I get 28mpg on the hywy driving like I do even got 31 in N.M. on the way to Nashville last year.. I hope it's a bit cooler in Savannah.. San Diego sure does spoil you....

well.... im out of luck... i just moved to Korea and my 5th gear started to grind.... looks like syncromesh is not working well... if i shift a bit slower than usual, no problem, both rev matching on or off but if i kinda throw in to 5th, it grinds like split second and gone. Thats before letting off from clutch..... Dont know what to do... since there is no M/T in korea and im pretty sure warranty is not covered....

wat2win 10-04-2011 01:11 AM

But I guess Ill still give shot at Nissan NA, Nissan Korea, and Nissan JP.... if i have to....

I myself am getting a grind going into 3rd and 5th. I will be going to the dealer sooner or later. Very upsetting that SO many people are having this problem on here :(
