Don't know if this will help, but has anyone thought about changing out one or more of the motor mounts? I have a Mazdaspeed 3 and a lot of people complained about grinding until they changed to stiffer motor mounts. It made a huge difference for me at least. I imagine that quick shifting jostles the transmission quite a bit, and putting a stiffer anchor to the chassis could help.

I am on my third transmission for this exact problem.. however this one has been running strong for all of 9k miles lol

Any tips for getting Nissan to do this? My transmission is crunching in 5th gear about once a day for about 3 months now. |
Keep going back.. make an appt.. take it back in. If they make the call to Nissan they will do a full transmission.
You've successfully replicated the problem, it's now escalating, end of story. |
Yeah it was easy for me each time. I took it in they replicated it... called techline... put a new trans in..

happens about once a day so I'm not optimistic they'll be able to reproduce it that morning, according to Round Rock Nissan might have to leave the car there for them to try multiple days.. |
Service appointment was successful.
The technician first again shifted in the double clutch like fashion, then I told him twice I shift in one motion. As soon as he shifted in one motion it reproduced. From what I can tell he shifted strait from 2nd to 5th. I get the picture he had seen the problem before and just wanted to cut to the chase. Also got the "rear hatch does not open after first push of release button" issue reproduced. I've got a new transmission and rear hatch parts on order with Nissan. |

Took the Z to the dealership yesterday because both iKeys spontaneously stopped working after the car sat in my parking for 5 days after a big snow storm here. Worked on 12/18/09, car sat for 5 days, then 5 days later after things thawed out, I had to use the real key to manually unlock the door and put the iKey in the slot for the pushbutton to work. The whole thing is fubar. Replaced batteries, still didn't work. blah blah blah...
Anyhow...casually mentioned that 5th gear and 6th gear are crunching. Car has 16,000 miles on it, been doing it since 5000 miles. They called today to say that my new transmission is on the way. NICE! Late, Trav |
had issue with my 2007 350z, same transmission. as stated, synchros are going, Nissan doesn't even bother with them, new transmission for you.
|
Seems like I remember someone on the forum mentioning that the problem that was destroying the 6th gear (and apparently 5th gear) synchronizers was that we were inadvertently pressing down on the shifter when shifting into 6th. Doing that starts to engage the reverse gear mechanisms and somehow screws around with the 5th and 6th gear synchros.
Just sayin..... Late, Trav |
Very interesting. Good point, be careful not to in the shifter

New transmission installed under warranty by Nissan Tuesday (also fixed issue with rear hatch not opening).
Owner satisfaction going Up |
wtf... this **** never happened with the 300zx.
ya after 70,000 miles and 20 years of abuse the synchros are starting to go. but not when they were new. but hell nissan made a new transmission for us! the 98 spec transmission. this is ridiculous. this should not be happening. |
My car does the same thing when shifting quickly to 6th. It only happens about once a week though so I doubt anyone would be able to reproduce it. I'll try to get it looked at at the same time I bring it in for hatch release not working properly, again...

I ground second twice yesterday, which has been happening more and more frequently in the last 5k miles. Now 4-5 grinds every time. Calling dealer.
|
Read my post.
I had no issue. My main complaint was the i-Keys not working and just casually mentioned that 6th gear was grinding when shifting 5-6. I knew fully well that a new transmission was what was needed, but I have dealth with it for 12,000 miles now (17,000 on the car...problem started @ 5000mi) and probably wouldn't have raised any hell with them if they didn't want to do anything about it. But to my surprise, they kept the car for diagnosis and the next day called and said I had a new transmission on the way. This new one is extremely quiet, whereas the original one had lots and lots of obnoxious gear noise and clunking from the start, and then the grinding started later. New one is quiet as a church mouse. The dealership I went to gave me no problems whatsoever about replacing it. Late, Trav |

Glad to know it's not just my car. Hopefully Nissan will get their crap together and fix these issues. My car does the grind when I skip 5th and shift into 6th, usually at a higher RPM. To avoid it crunching I usually pull it out of 4th/3rd and press it against 6th while I wait for the RPMs to drop and it will slip into 6th by itself easily. Still it's very annoying.
Nissan wouldn't have these issues if they went with a reputable transmission manufacturer, such as Getrag, instead of desiging their own. |
In two days I will officially be on my 3rd transmission... first it was a grind from 5th to 6th, now it's from 4th to 5th. The general service manager thinks Nissan will void my powertrain warranty (which sucks already coming from a previous Hyundai owner - 10 years/100,000 versus 3 years/36,000 miles) since no one in the area has had these problems... That's funny...because the only ones they've sold have been mine and two others...and of those, one is a 7AT, and the other is a 6MT Syncrorev driven by a school teacher in her mid 30s. Anyone ever written a "good" research paper using only 3 sources.....that don't even a agree.....
|
I've got an appointment to take mine in next Tuesday at 6pm. Stupid 6th gear still grinding away :(
|
Maybe you jumped a tooth!
D: |
how exactly does one go about grinding a gear... like if they wanted to do it on purpose. i dont really understand how someone grinds the gears in their car.
|
Damn Nissan gear box, it's so damn clunky is scares the hell out of me even when it's acting normally. Thankfully the clunk differs from a grind.

Problem is when the synchros go bad, you can't stop it from grinding (unless you wait seconds before completing the shift).. |
The G35 coupe gear box is worse than the 370Z's.... No issues for me so far...
|
i've noticed that mine grinds from 6th to 5th on a downshift at highway speeds every so often, makes me grimace every single time, wonder whats up with it...
|
How many miles is everyone having these issues? As reported, mine was at 10k

Then I was obviously aware.. had issues at 12k.. replaced.. then 15k.. kept taking it back.. took a couple visits before they would warranty on each occasion.. but ultimately it was evident that it wasn't me doing something wrong. Now I'm technically out of warranty at 98k.. but I will say I have no issues.. and it's been probably 35k.. It's weird that most don't have issues.. but some do.. almost like it's an on-off switch to whether you'll have problems or not. I'm hoping I now have a 'good' transmission.. and won't have to worry about it. |

Just took my car in for maintenance, I'll be getting a new transmission :)
|
I think mine is starting to get a little crunchy when I downshift from 6th to 5th, stupid Nissan tranny. I wonder how much money Nissan is losing due to these replacements.

You guys are making me nervous. Anyone with 2010's get this problem?????
|
LOL this forum is making me nervous also. Between the oil consumption, now trannys grinding. I just bought a twin turbo kit and if I have any of these issues I am going to be screwed since Nissan is going to blame everything on that.
Although I do have the hatch problem I have to hold it down a little bit after I hit the button once to get it to open |
Update: I took my car in for diagnosis last week and they said that it needs a new tranny. Got called this past Wednesday and was told my new transmission is in town and I am to bring my car in this next Wednesday for them to replace it. Woo!
