I use synchrorev 90% of the time. It grinded in to 5th gear when S mode was off few times. After transmission gets warmed up, It doesn't grind in to 5th.

I Cold Started my car in the morning, Push the clutch in all the way and started to go through all gears ! It grinds In to 5th gear most of the time. I let go the clutch and push the clutch again, It won't grind.

Grinding and Lollygagging

Mine is a base model - no SRM. The grinding is not the same in the new transmission; the first one crunched when upshifting to 5, from a lower gear (3 or 4) - the new gearbox grinds - much less frequently - only when shifting down from 6 to 5. Both issues, however, seem to be related to 5th gear.

The grind happens at about 4,000 RPM I'd guess, less at slow RPMs - goes into gear much easier when "lollygagging."

I have to say honestly that I do know how to shift a manual transmission - been doing that for over 40 years, in a dozen or so cars. This is the first time I've ever noticed behavior like that in a new vehicle.

First time I noticed the grind was after a quick 1-2 upshift, then quickly laying off the throttle, shifting rapidly into from 2nd to 5th - ggrrrinddd.

Now after reading this thread, I'm dreading. I have experimented a bit, and the grind only happens when shifting to 5th from ANY other gear quickly (up or down). Does not seem to matter how well I depress the clutch. It works fine if I wait a second or so for the gears to sync.

It also seems to lessen the chance of grinding if I slant the 4-5 upshift more diagonally "/", rather than "N"-shaped, if you know what I mean. I'm just disappointed that I have to wait longer to snap into 5th than any other gear now. Other combinations that skip, like 3-6, and 1-3 seem to work fine.

Sad to say but the 350 and the "G"s have the same issue I think I am gonna Lemon Law my 370 I am not gonna put a new tranny in every 20,000 miles. This will be my 3rd tranny since new 55,000.

Sad to say but seems the 350 and G's

Just saw this post
We lost 5th gear in the race yesterday.
Our transmission had 6 full Continental Sports car race weekends on it as well as about 5 other test days and hours and hours on chassis dyno (5th gear pulls)
For this series....
That is a looooooooot of time on a oem gear box
When I was involved with the 350z program... We got 1 1/2 to 2 races and the synchros were gone.

Rusty 01-26-2013 09:29 PM

Dwnshift, do you use the stock OEM gear box as is, unopened. Or do you tear it apart and go through it before the season starts? :tiphat:

Dwnshift 01-27-2013 03:46 AM

We started with a brand new OEM gear box. That is what will go in for the next race... And will then be swapped after 4 1/2 races.
We are able to get warrantied boxes that have been sent in for gear noise or synchro issues..
They usually get sent in...inspected ..new synchros ..and then we get to use them.
One mans garbage is a another's gold!
;)
This was our first issue at all on the gearbox and it happened pretty quick.

$30,000 try $45,000 out the door loaded and you're right it's a sports car, my wife's 1996 328i with 160,000 has no issues, mine with 55,000 is going in for it's 3rd tranny replacement,,, ?????

Print out the forum bring it to them my dealer told me the same thing that they have NEVER seen this problem before,, to bad their trannys are junk cause I really like the car

56,000 mile on mine. I am on my 3rd transmission, the last one Nissan built special for me, a prototype,,, We will see what happens here, good thing I got the 75,000 mile warranty ,,,5th gear grinding issues happen again they will be getting the car back. Not spending $45,000 for a car I can't drive. I will drive my old Z's.......

i went thru 3 transmissions in my 5sp IS300 within 80k miles. thats because i beat the hell out of it. im curious as to how hard you are on these trannys.

VDC_OFF 02-12-2013 11:16 AM

My second gear has been doing that since the beginning. I have scratched it about 10 times already. I haven't taken it in because I don't think I can replicate it without shifting hard like Im racing which is usually when it happens.

Wabbyyy 02-16-2013 07:20 PM

Take it to the dealer

AlexRaymond19 02-17-2013 08:31 AM

My fifth gear does this too! Annoying as hell. It seems to only do it if i skip fourth though, like i hammer it in second or third, and get lazy and put it right in fifth

56,000, on my 3rd Tranny, all failed in the 5th gear synchros,,, the last one Nissan built as a prototype, so we will see what happens. This one goes bad they will be getting the car back. Thank God I bought the extended warranty!
Funny when I talk to the dealer they tell me they have never heard of this issue,, they must be politcians,, deny deny deny,, "I did not have sexual relations with that woman"........

Cmike2780 07-13-2013 11:32 AM

Well, it finally got bad enough where they can order me a new transmission. Currently at 43k miles. We looked at the option to replace the clutch while they're at it...they said parts for just the clutch comes out to $1,600....I was like :wtf: Anyway, at least they're replacing the transmission under warranty.

LafitteZ 07-13-2013 11:52 AM

Wtf^^^^^.

SurfDog 09-07-2013 08:36 PM

After hammering it a bit on the track yesterday I'm grinding hard into 5th. Dealer is going to swap it no questions asked (in warranty). I drive an 09 with 42k miles. (I have a Nissan certified pre owned warranty that takes me out to 100k in drive-train:tup:)

I can't wait to drive my new tranny Friday:excited:

I'm disappointed that I have to swap trannys at 42k, but the previous owner seemed to be a pretty poor driver (by condition of gearbox and clutch)

Now I will have a new gearbox to go with my JWT clutch/flywheel and my Quaife diff. now that I think about it, I have pretty much a completely new drive-train the only un-swapped element is the right stub axle and my carbon drive-shaft.

I now have a 2013 transmission in my 2010, after 2 replacements.
I think it funny that they seem to have fixed a problem that they said never existed..

RumbleFish 09-12-2016 12:13 PM

How nice, I'm not the only one having this issue...just grinding from 4th to 5th.

Can anyone tel me if having an RJM clutch pedal installed will void my warranty as far as the tranny goes?

RumbleFish 09-12-2016 07:06 PM

anyone?...Bueller?

RumbleFish 10-04-2016 01:11 PM

xplhavoc 12-22-2016 03:17 PM

My car has had funny syncros since day one. 2013 370z Base.
5th gear and 6th gear now.
Took it in to Surfcity Nissan, tech says OMG grinds bad. Got a call saying from the Service MGR that all is good and that the tech did not find anything. Lies. I just went in and got my car and left in a hurry. Didnt pay nothing. They state the spring in the clutch is bad. LOL
I put on 7600 miles a year and can drive better then 99% out there.

Called customer relations at Nissan made another appointment at Tustin Nissan. And OMG what a difference. Walked it late at 1PM told them the problems, got a tech to go with be right away he agreed. Got a rental that day. Got a call 8AM next day states new transmission on its way. Clutch only 50% gone. All covered. Great guys.

After suing and winning 2 cases at 2 different dealerships Costa Mesa Nissan and Imperio Nissan for damage to both of my cars for different things it was great for this dealership to take pride in the name Nissan. As we all know there all crooks. .....
