Soft Clutch / Empty reservoir

Hey everyone,

So I just got my car back from the dealer after having them look at a few issues, one of which being the feel of the clutch.

Their diagnosis was that nothing was wrong with the clutch and operated normally.

I got the car back and the clutch immediately felt softer. I drove it home and pressure built back up but still didn't feel normal.

I then had the bright idea to check the clutch fluid. Lo and behold the clutch reservoir was completely empty.

Today is thanksgiving so the dealer was closed so I filled up with some Prestone DOT 4 fluid until I get it looked at and flushed. The clutch still has a significant amount of soft play to it.

Any idea if this is a CSC issue or perhaps something else?

* it blows my mind how you tell the dealer that the clutch doesn't feel normal and they don't even check the fluid level!?!

Bet your CSC is leaking inside the bell housing. :(

OP please tell us what LA dealership diagnosed it to the best of their ability and gave your car a clean bill of health?

Presto 11-25-2016 02:19 AM

goodbye CSC. Also your dealer tech is an idiot.

1st Nissan - Simi Valley

Going to take it to Keyes in Van Nuys today or Universal City Nissan.

Any recommendations?

Call each of them, and ask which one will install an aftermarket csc if you bring it to them. Then call Joe at ZSpeed and grab a HD CSC so you don't have this problem again. Also, make sure you have them look into the condition of the clutch. Clutches don't like being soaked in brake fluid.

That seems to be the smarter direction. However, I dropped off the car this morning at Keyes Nissan in Van Nuys and hopefully they'll fix it for now.
I'll definitely go with a HD CSC should all else fail.

Thank you everyone for all of your feedback.

I don't know what it is, but it seems like some dealers will play dumb about this, or maybe just are dumb period.

I'm an advocate for getting the clutch and flywheel replaced to your liking as well, since they have the drop the transmission anyway, and you'd have to replace the master regardless. And also as Chuck said, bell housing is probably all soaked and the current clutch may have suffered a bit. With that I'd want to go to a specialist vs. dealership if you're not afraid of the warranty hit. Specialty Z is in Chatsworth. I've only dealt with them remotely but pretty much everyone would agree they give top service.

Specialty z is hit or miss on their stuff. Unless you're local, I'd look elsewhere. ZSpeed or Z1 will get you what you need.

I agree the factory clutch kind of sucks. Considering it's still so new I'll wait until I'm out of warranty before I swap everything out.

They're most likely going to have to replace the clutch anyway since it got soaked with brake fluid. The best bet would be to find a dealer that will eat the warranty labor and you bring them the parts. Csc, clutch, flywheel, HD master.

I'll wait for them to call me to see what my options are. That being said wouldn't I still end up voiding the warranty moving forward by replacing oem parts with aftermarket parts?

Thanks for the suggestion.

You don't void a warranty. You might have a claim on the clutch denied if you have an aftermarket setup, but the HD csc won't fail so it's not a problem. The only way to kill one of those cscs is by pairing it with a spec clutch.

You have warranty so take it to a dealer but that is up to you. You can install aftermarket parts but dealer selection is important. The only dealers I would go to is Nissan in Duarte (CSC warrant repair #1 and have GTR techs) and Fontana Nissan (where I bought my car and many parts, good techs). Universal City has been around for a while and have been very involved in the Z community. They've repaired their share of CSCs but I have not brought in my car over there.

If you are close by the Canoga Park area - take it to Specialty Z for out of warranty, aftermarket work, and tune. I have a good relationship with the guys over there and have received nothing but excellent service. You can also try Precision Z also in Canoga Park. PM me if you have questions.
